How to Fix the FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe Application Error

The safest way to fix a FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe application error is to follow Epic Games’ troubleshooting order: verify Fortnite’s files, repair Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) when it is mentioned, test EAC connectivity, update Windows and Microsoft Visual C++ components, update the graphics driver, then address launcher permissions, cache, security software, storage and drive health. Reinstalling the game is an escalation step, not the first move. File verification does not affect saved data.

What the FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe error means

FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe is the Windows executable that starts the PC version of Fortnite. An application-error dialog means Windows or a Fortnite component could not start, load, or continue running that executable. The message alone does not identify one cause. A damaged game file, a failed Easy Anti-Cheat component, blocked network access, missing Windows runtime files, an outdated graphics driver, launcher state, security software, insufficient disk space or a failing drive can all produce similar symptoms.

Do not assume the error proves malware or a missing tournament-security feature. Epic’s February 10, 2026 announcement says that, beginning February 19, 2026, Fortnite tournaments would require Secure Boot, TPM and IOMMU on PC. That announcement concerns tournament participation; it is not evidence that every ordinary launch error is caused by one of those settings.

Before troubleshooting

  • Record the exact wording of the dialog and whether it mentions EAC, a missing file, or a code.
  • Close Fortnite and Epic Games Launcher completely. If the launcher remains in the notification area, exit it there too.
  • Save work in other applications before restarting Windows.
  • Make sure you can sign back into your Epic Games account before removing local data or reinstalling.
  • If other games or applications are also crashing, treat that as a possible Windows, driver or hardware problem rather than a Fortnite-only problem.

Fixes in Epic’s recommended order

1. Verify Fortnite’s files

Verification is the lowest-risk first action. Epic says the process checks the files on your computer, replaces files that differ and repairs damaged or corrupted files; it does not affect saved data.

  • 3-Way Trigger Locks – Set the travel distance of the triggers with three different positions to pull off quicker actions in your favorite FPS games or go full throttle in a high-end race car
  1. Open Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Open your Library and find Fortnite.
  3. Click the three-dot menu beside the game.
  4. Choose Manage, then select Verify.
  5. Wait for validation to finish before launching Fortnite again. Do not interrupt the process by shutting down the PC or closing the launcher.

If the launcher reports that files were repaired and the game now starts, the problem was local installation data. If the same error returns, continue to the next applicable step rather than repeatedly verifying without investigating EAC, Windows or the driver.

2. Reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat when EAC is involved

Use this step if the dialog names Easy Anti-Cheat, says the game could not start, or Fortnite still refuses to launch after verification. Epic’s support guidance for that condition is to reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat using its Fortnite procedure.

  1. Open Epic’s official Easy Anti-Cheat reinstall instructions from Epic Games Support.
  2. Follow the Fortnite-specific reinstall steps exactly, using the Easy Anti-Cheat component installed with your game.
  3. Restart Windows when the procedure requests it, then start Fortnite from Epic Games Launcher.

A failed EAC installation can look like a generic executable error, so a successful file verification does not rule it out. Do not delete random system files or download replacement EAC files from unofficial sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Test Easy Anti-Cheat network access

EAC may be installed correctly but unable to reach its download or service endpoints. Epic says to open its EAC download endpoints in a browser and look for 200 – HTTP OK.

  • 3-Way Trigger Locks – Set the travel distance of the triggers with three different positions to pull off quicker actions in your favorite FPS games or go full throttle in a high-end race car
  1. Use the endpoint addresses listed in Epic’s EAC support article; open each one in a browser.
  2. Check that each endpoint returns 200 – HTTP OK.
  3. If neither endpoint returns that response, temporarily investigate the firewall, security suite, router and network configuration.
  4. Allow Easy Anti-Cheat and the Fortnite installation folder through the firewall according to the security product’s instructions.
  5. Retry the launch. If the endpoints remain blocked, contact the router or internet-service-provider manufacturer for help with filtering or DNS restrictions.

Do not disable all network protection permanently. The purpose of this test is to identify blocking; restore normal protection after making a narrow, documented allowance.

4. Install Windows updates and Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables

Fortnite depends on Windows components and runtime libraries. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance includes installing current operating-system updates and the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables.

  1. Open Settings in Windows and run Windows Update. Install available updates and restart when requested.
  2. Install the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables from Microsoft’s official download and support pages. Use the architecture appropriate for the game and Windows installation.
  3. Restart the PC even if the installer does not insist on it, then test Fortnite again.

If Windows reports damaged system files, run Microsoft’s System File Checker procedure from an elevated Command Prompt. The standard scan command is sfc /scannow; allow it to finish and follow any repair or restart instruction it reports. System File Checker addresses Windows files, not Fortnite’s own content, so it complements rather than replaces verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Update the graphics driver

Epic’s Fortnite crash workflow explicitly lists current video drivers. Identify the graphics processor installed in the computer and obtain the driver from that GPU manufacturer’s official support page.

  • Immersive Impulse Triggers – Provides reactive rumble sensations using built-in motors so you can feel the action of the game*
  1. Open Device Manager or the manufacturer’s control panel to identify the graphics adapter.
  2. Visit the manufacturer’s official driver-support page and select the exact GPU and Windows edition.
  3. Install the current recommended driver, following the installer’s clean-install or reset option only if the manufacturer provides it.
  4. Restart Windows and launch Fortnite.

If the error started immediately after a driver update, note that timing. A manufacturer-supported rollback or a different current driver branch may be appropriate, but avoid mixing driver packages from unrelated GPU manufacturers.

6. Run Epic Games Launcher with administrator rights

Permissions can prevent the launcher from reading, updating or starting components. Epic lists running the launcher as administrator as a separate troubleshooting action.

  1. Close Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Right-click its shortcut or executable and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Approve the Windows permission prompt.
  4. Launch Fortnite from that elevated launcher and check whether the error changes.

Administrator mode is a diagnostic step, not a reason to run every application elevated forever. If it makes no difference, close the elevated launcher and continue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache

A damaged launcher cache can leave stale installation or account state even when the game files are valid. Epic’s general sequence includes clearing the launcher cache as a separate step.

  1. Exit Epic Games Launcher completely, including its notification-area process.
  2. Use Epic’s official cache-clearing instructions for your Windows version so only the launcher cache is removed.
  3. Start the launcher again, allow it to rebuild the cache, and retry Fortnite.

Do not remove the Fortnite installation or the local Fortnite profile folder during this step. Those are escalation actions and can require additional setup.

8. Close background applications and check security exclusions

Epic identifies background applications and security exclusions as possible sources of interference, and its EAC guidance warns that some programs conflict with anti-cheat software.

  1. Close overlays, recording tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, injectors, debuggers and other nonessential background programs.
  2. Restart Windows with only essential startup software running, then test Fortnite.
  3. If the game works, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict.
  4. Review antivirus and firewall rules. If you need an exclusion for testing, limit it to the Fortnite folder and EAC component, use the security product’s documented method, and remove the exclusion if it does not help.

Security exclusions lower protection for the excluded location. They are troubleshooting measures, not proof that security software is the cause and not a permanent recommendation.

9. Check the clock, free space and drive health

Epic notes that an incorrect device date or time and low free space can contribute to corrupted-data errors. Its broader workflow also includes checking the drive for errors and trying another drive.

  1. Open Windows date-and-time settings and enable automatic time and time-zone selection, or correct them manually if your environment requires manual settings.
  2. Check the drive containing Fortnite and the Epic Games Launcher. Free enough space for updates, temporary files and verification to complete; the support guidance does not specify a universal minimum, so leave a practical buffer rather than filling the volume.
  3. Run Windows’ drive-error checking tool for that volume and follow any restart or repair instruction.
  4. If the drive reports errors, Fortnite fails alongside other games, or installation data repeatedly becomes corrupted, test on a known-good drive instead of repeatedly reinstalling on the suspect one.

Moving the game to another drive is a diagnostic escalation. It can separate a Fortnite installation problem from a storage problem, but it does not repair a failing drive.

10. Reinstall Fortnite only after the software checks

Reinstallation is appropriate when verification, EAC repair, Windows and driver updates, launcher cleanup and storage checks have not resolved the error.

  1. Use Epic Games Launcher to uninstall Fortnite.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Install Fortnite again from Epic Games Launcher, preferably on a drive that passed the health check.
  4. If Epic’s documented escalation procedure calls for it, remove the local %localappdata%FortniteGame folder after uninstalling and before reinstalling. Follow Epic’s instructions carefully because this removes local Fortnite data.
  5. Run the newly installed game once before restoring optional overlays or background utilities.

Removing the local folder is not the same as verifying files and should be reserved for the documented escalation path. Confirm account access and understand which local settings may be removed before proceeding.

Secure Boot, TPM and IOMMU: when they matter

Epic Games / Fortnite Competitive announced on February 10, 2026 that all Fortnite tournaments would require Secure Boot, TPM and IOMMU to be enabled from February 19, 2026. These are platform-security requirements for tournament play. They should be checked if you are trying to enter an affected tournament or receive a requirement-specific message, but they are not a general explanation for every FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe application error.

Changing firmware security settings can affect Windows startup and other software. Do not change BIOS or UEFI settings solely because a generic application-error dialog appears; complete the Epic troubleshooting sequence and use the tournament requirements as the reason to investigate them.

How to interpret the result of each step

  • Verification repairs files: the local Fortnite installation contained data that differed from Epic’s expected files.
  • EAC reinstall fixes launch: the anti-cheat installation, rather than the game’s main content, was the blocking component.
  • EAC endpoints do not return 200 – HTTP OK: investigate firewall, router or ISP filtering before changing the game installation.
  • Windows, Visual C++ or System File Checker repairs help: the executable may have been unable to load a damaged or missing operating-system dependency.
  • A graphics-driver update changes the crash: the failure was likely connected to the video-driver layer, although only continued stable play confirms that.
  • Another drive works: investigate the original drive for health or filesystem problems instead of treating repeated corruption as a Fortnite-only issue.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not reinstall before verifying files; reinstalling consumes time and can reproduce the same problem on a blocked network or unhealthy drive.
  • Do not download Fortnite, EAC or runtime files from unofficial mirrors.
  • Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection to bypass one launch attempt.
  • Do not assume that tournament Secure Boot, TPM and IOMMU requirements explain a generic error outside tournament play.
  • Do not keep deleting local folders without checking what data they contain and following Epic’s documented instructions.
  • Do not treat one successful launch under administrator rights as proof that the underlying permissions or installation problem is permanently solved.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary and cache cleanup, vulnerability checks and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

When to contact support

Contact Epic Games Support with the exact dialog text, your Windows edition, GPU model, the step that changed the behavior, and whether EAC endpoints returned 200 – HTTP OK. If the problem persists after reinstalling on a drive that passes health checks, or if other games and Windows applications also fail, contact the computer or component manufacturer for hardware support. Epic’s documented sequence does not publish a universal success rate or hardware-failure rate, so a continuing error requires diagnosis rather than a guaranteed software fix.
