Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App stays on “Preparing to install”, wait briefly first: this can be a normal driver-installation stage, and the screen may flicker or turn black temporarily. If the window becomes unresponsive, loops back to the same message, or ends with “NVIDIA Installer failed”, bypass the in-app updater and install the correct driver directly from NVIDIA.
The least-disruptive route is: restart Windows, run the updater as administrator, then use NVIDIA’s standalone driver installer. Use a custom clean installation only if the normal installation fails, and reserve full driver removal for persistent problems.

How to tell whether the installer is really stuck
A brief pause at Preparing to install is not automatically an error. The installer may be extracting files, checking existing NVIDIA components, or preparing to switch display drivers. Temporary flickering or a short black screen can also occur during the actual installation. See the general update guidance at Bethesda’s NVIDIA driver instructions.

Do not repeatedly click Try again if the same cycle immediately repeats. If the display goes black during installation, wait before forcing a shutdown. A prolonged black screen, reboot loop, or black screen outside the installation process is not normal.
Before you troubleshoot
Note your exact GPU model, Windows edition, current driver version, and whether the computer is a laptop. For a laptop, also identify the manufacturer and model. Download the replacement driver before removing anything, particularly if you may need a clean reinstall.
Fix 1: Restart Windows
Close games and GPU-intensive applications, then restart Windows normally. A reboot can clear an orphaned installer process and release files locked by an earlier update attempt. Try the update once more after Windows starts.
If the updater is frozen, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. End GeForce Experience, the NVIDIA App, or the unresponsive NVIDIA installer process, then restart Windows. Avoid ending unrelated Windows processes.
Fix 2: Run the updater as administrator
- Open Start and search for GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App.
- Right-click the application.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Try the driver update once.
This tests for a permissions problem; it is not a guaranteed solution.

Fix 3: Close software that may interfere
Close games, launchers, overlays, screen-recording tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, and overclocking software before running the installer. If the problem occurs while the package is downloading, temporarily test without a VPN, proxy, or aggressive network filter.
Third-party antivirus or endpoint-security software can sometimes block extraction or installation. Temporarily pause it only if necessary, and only according to its own controls. Restore protection immediately after the test. Do not leave antivirus disabled as a permanent fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 4: Install the NVIDIA driver manually
Manual installation separates a driver problem from a GeForce Experience or NVIDIA App problem. Use NVIDIA’s official driver page, GeForce driver page, or advanced driver search.
Select the correct:
- Product type and GPU series
- Exact GPU model
- Windows edition and architecture
- Driver type, when shown
- Game Ready or Studio branch
Choose Game Ready if gaming and new releases are your priority. Choose Studio if you primarily use video-editing, 3D, photography, or other creative applications and prefer their tested release focus. Either branch can run games.
Download the installer, close the NVIDIA application, right-click the downloaded .exe file, select Run as administrator, and follow the setup screens. If the standalone installer works, the display driver is likely healthy even if GeForce Experience remains broken.

Fix 5: Use Custom installation
If a normal installation fails:
- Start the downloaded NVIDIA installer.
- Select Custom (Advanced).
- Continue to the component-selection screen.
- Select Perform a clean installation, if offered.
- Install the required components and restart Windows.
A clean installation can remove conflicting NVIDIA driver settings, but it may reset custom NVIDIA Control Panel profiles and other preferences. It is not the same as removing every NVIDIA component from Windows, so do not treat it as a full replacement for a deeper cleanup.
Fix 6: Reinstall the NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience
Use this step when the standalone driver installs successfully but the application still fails, repeatedly shows a migration prompt, or crashes before the driver installer opens.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current NVIDIA App from NVIDIA’s official announcement and download page.
- Install it and retry the update only if you need its automatic updates, overlay, recording, or optimization features.
NVIDIA launched the NVIDIA App as the successor incorporating major GeForce Experience features. NVIDIA’s migration notice also says that some older GeForce Experience versions cannot update automatically and warns of future changes to critical GeForce Experience web services. See NVIDIA’s migration notice.
There is usually no reason to keep both management applications installed while troubleshooting. Community reports describe conflicts when both are present, but this is not a universal, officially documented diagnosis. If you are migrating, remove the old application first rather than maintaining both unnecessarily.
Fix 7: Check Windows, storage, and laptop compatibility
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Confirm that the system drive has enough free space for extraction and installation.
- Verify that the driver matches the exact GPU and Windows version.
- Use a supported 64-bit Windows installation.
- Connect a laptop to AC power.
Laptop manufacturers such as Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, and HP may customize graphics, power management, display switching, or hotkey behavior. If the generic NVIDIA package repeatedly fails—or if brightness, sleep/wake, external displays, or hybrid-GPU switching breaks after installation—compare it with the driver offered on the laptop manufacturer’s support page.

Fix 8: Repair Windows system files
If both the in-app updater and the correct standalone installer fail, damaged Windows components may be involved. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Allow each command to finish, restart Windows, and retry the manual NVIDIA installer. These are general Windows repair commands, not NVIDIA-specific fixes, so they are most useful when other installers also fail or the system has recently experienced failed updates.
Fix 9: Perform a full driver cleanup only as a last resort
Use a full clean-removal workflow only when multiple correct driver packages fail, the display driver appears corrupted, a GPU or vendor has changed, a previous removal was interrupted, or Device Manager shows an abnormal display-adapter state.
- Create a restore point or backup.
- Record the exact GPU model.
- Download the replacement NVIDIA driver first.
- Temporarily disconnect from the internet if Windows immediately replaces the driver during cleanup.
- Boot into Windows Safe Mode.
- Use a reputable display-driver removal utility according to its current instructions.
- Restart and install the downloaded NVIDIA driver immediately.
Display Driver Uninstaller is commonly used for this purpose; its vendor page is Wagnardsoft. It is powerful but unnecessary for a single temporary updater hang. Incorrect or premature use can leave you temporarily using Microsoft’s basic display driver.

Choosing the right installation path
| Option | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Express installation | The system has no history of driver problems | Least disruptive, but may preserve the condition causing the failure |
| Custom installation | A normal install fails or settings may be corrupted | More control; a clean install can reset preferences |
| Full removal and reinstall | Several correct packages fail or the driver state is clearly damaged | Most disruptive and complex |
How to verify that the driver update worked
- Open NVIDIA Control Panel and select Help → System Information, where available. Record the displayed driver version.
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters and confirm that the expected NVIDIA GPU is listed without a warning icon.
- Restart Windows once more if the installer requested it.
- Open NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience and confirm that it no longer offers the same driver update.
- Launch a game or GPU-accelerated application.
- Check resolution, refresh rate, external displays, GPU switching, and any overlay or recording features you use.
Do not rely only on the final installer screen. Windows Update may stage a different display driver, and Device Manager may show a version that differs from the NVIDIA application. Verify the installed version after reboot.
When to contact support
Escalate to NVIDIA, your laptop manufacturer, or a repair professional if multiple correct driver versions fail, the installer generates a different error every time, Device Manager reports Code 43, the GPU disappears intermittently, or the problem began after a BIOS update, power event, or suspected hardware failure. Persistent black screens outside the installation process also point beyond a routine updater problem.
When reporting the issue, include the exact GPU model, Windows version, current and attempted driver versions, the precise error code, whether the standalone installer fails, and whether the computer is a laptop.
