Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The fix depends on which layer rejected the identity. An “invalid service account” message usually means the account was deleted or never existed, the resource is aimed at the wrong project, the credential JSON is malformed, a key is invalid, required permissions or federation are missing, or a deployment tool supplied an unusable account value. Confirm the exact product and project first, then work through account existence, project targeting, credentials, keys, permissions, and deployment configuration in that order.
What “invalid service account” means
A service account is a Google Cloud identity used by an application, deployment system, or managed service. The phrase invalid service account is a family of errors rather than one diagnosis. The same wording can be raised by Config Connector, the Firebase Admin SDK, Firebase CLI and Cloud Functions deployment, CCAI Platform, or another integration. Each product validates a slightly different combination of account, project, credential, key, and permission.

Four causes account for most failures:
- The identity is missing. The account may have been deleted, disabled, mistyped, or created in a different project.
- The resource targets the wrong project or account. A configuration can contain a valid email but point to a project that does not own that identity. Config Connector can also infer a project from the namespace when no explicit target is supplied.
- The credential file is not a service-account certificate. It may be unreadable, invalid JSON, a different credential type, or a mixture of fields from different accounts. Firebase Admin Python requires a
typefield whose value isservice_account. - The deployment or integration supplied an invalid value. A literal value such as
defaultcan be rejected where an actual service-account email is required, and an integration can flag a key as Invalid or Needs Attention.
Do not rotate keys or recreate identities before identifying the layer that failed. Replacing a perfectly good key will not repair a wrong project reference, and recreating an account will not repair malformed JSON.

Before changing the configuration
- Copy the complete error. Preserve the product name, HTTP status, project ID, account email or account value, API, and client version. A suffix such as
defaultis diagnostically important. - Identify the execution path. Decide whether the failure occurs in a local SDK, a Firebase deployment, Config Connector reconciliation, CCAI Platform, or another service. The same account can work in one path and fail in another because the caller and permissions differ.
- Protect secrets. Do not paste a private key into an issue, ticket, chat, or source repository. Work from a protected copy and redact key material when sharing logs.
- Record the intended account. Write down the exact service-account email and the project that should own it. This gives you a reference while checking every configuration file and console page.
Step-by-step manual fix
1. Confirm that the service account exists
In Google Cloud Console, open IAM & Admin > Service Accounts for the project named in the error. Search for the complete email address, not a display name or a shortened account value.
#1 Best Overall
- If the account is present and active, copy its exact email and continue to project and credential checks.
- If it is disabled, determine whether the product should use a different active identity or whether an administrator must re-enable it.
- If it was deleted, recreate or select the intended account, then update every resource that still references the old identity.
- If no matching account appears, you may be viewing the wrong project or the configuration may contain a typo.
Deleting an IAM service account can leave dependent IAM policy resources unable to resolve their reference. Deleted-account bindings can remain for 60 days, so stale IAMPolicy, IAMPartialPolicy, and IAMPolicyMember resources may continue to produce reconciliation errors. Remove or update those stale resources after you have chosen the replacement identity.
2. Verify that every component targets the owning project
A valid account is still invalid to a resource that is pointed at another project. Compare the project ID in the error with the project that owns the service account and with the project named by your deployment configuration.
- For Config Connector, inspect
spec.projectRefand any project annotation on the resource. Supply the intended project explicitly rather than relying on inference. - Check namespaces carefully. Config Connector warns that, when no explicit target is supplied, a namespace name can become the project ID. A namespace that happens to resemble an environment label is not necessarily the Google Cloud project you intended.
- For Firebase and Cloud Functions, check the project selected by the Firebase configuration and the project used by the deployment command or CI job.
- For an SDK or third-party integration, verify that the credential’s
project_idagrees with the project in the service configuration. A service account can be used by workloads in another project only when the product and IAM policy explicitly allow that arrangement.
3. Validate the credential file or object
When the failure occurs before an API call, inspect the credential itself. Firebase Admin Python accepts either a certificate-file path or a parsed dictionary. Its implementation rejects a certificate unless the JSON contains a type field set to service_account, producing the message: “Invalid service account certificate. Certificate must contain a "type" field set to "service_account".”

- Open the file using the same account and environment that run the application. A path that works on a developer machine may not exist in a container, build runner, or function.
- Confirm that the entire file is valid JSON and that no surrounding shell text, code-fence markers, comments, or truncated lines were included.
- Check that
typeis exactlyservice_account, including spelling and capitalization. - Check that
client_email,project_id, and the private-key fields came from the same downloaded certificate and intended project. Do not combine fields copied from separate files. - Ensure the process can read the file and that the application passes either the path or parsed object in the form expected by its SDK version.
- Replace the file in the deployment secret or environment variable, not only on your local disk, if the failing workload runs remotely.
If the JSON is valid but the account named inside it has been deleted or belongs to another project, credential parsing will succeed while authentication or authorization still fails. Continue with the identity and project checks rather than treating a parseable file as proof that the setup is correct.
4. Replace an invalid integration key
Some products validate individual service-account keys and label them Invalid or Needs Attention. In that case, generate a new key for the intended service account and replace the invalid key in the product’s credential settings. Google’s CCAI guidance specifically instructs administrators to generate service-account keys for invalid keys and replace them with the new ones.
- Update the integration wherever the old key is stored, including a secret manager, deployment variable, or hosted connector.
- Restart or redeploy the component so it loads the replacement credential.
- After the new key is confirmed in use, revoke the old key if it is no longer needed.
- Keep the downloaded private key protected; possession of the file can allow use of the service account until the key is revoked.
The CCAI documentation carrying this guidance was last updated on July 17, 2026. Product screens and labels can change, so match the instructions to the edition and region of the service you are using.

5. Check roles, impersonation, and federation
An existing account with a correct certificate can still be rejected because the caller is not allowed to use it. Check the role required by the specific product and resource. If one identity is attempting to impersonate another, verify that the calling principal has the required impersonation permission on the target service account.
When Workload Identity Federation is involved, inspect both sides of the trust: the external identity mapping and the IAM binding that permits it to act as the target service account. Config Connector documents missing IAM permissions and missing Workload Identity bindings as separate causes, so fixing one does not establish the other.
Finally, confirm that the API used by the failing operation is enabled in the project that owns the resource. An account can authenticate successfully while an API request is rejected because the service is disabled or the account lacks the product-specific role.

6. Investigate Firebase’s default service-account error
If the message is Invalid function service account requested: default, do not create an account literally named “default.” The reported failure involved a Cloud Functions request whose serviceAccountEmail field contained the string default; the service returned HTTP 400 with INVALID_ARGUMENT because that value was not accepted as an email address.
- Inspect the generated Cloud Functions request or deployment log and locate the service-account field.
- Review Firebase configuration, deployment descriptors, environment substitutions, and CI variables that populate that field.
- Replace the literal
defaultwith the fully qualified email of the intended service account, or remove the override if the current Firebase release is supposed to select a valid default automatically. - Confirm that the named account exists in the deployment project and has the roles required by the function.
- Retry with the current Firebase CLI. Check Firebase CLI release notes for fixes related to invalid-account handling and projects whose default compute service account changed.
A Firebase CLI issue documenting this request pattern was opened on July 1, 2022. The age of that report does not prove that every current release is affected; use the release notes for the version installed in your environment and capture the exact generated request when escalating.
7. Apply the Config Connector recovery path
For a Config Connector reconciliation error, start with the IAM service account object in the project referenced by the resource. Google’s Config Connector guidance is direct: “To fix the issue, ensure that the IAM service account used by Config Connector exists.”
Best Value
- Read the resource’s project reference and namespace or project annotation.
- Open that project’s service-account list and verify the referenced account.
- If the account was deleted, create or select the replacement and update the resource to use its email.
- Find dependent
IAMPolicy,IAMPartialPolicy, andIAMPolicyMemberobjects that still name the deleted account. - Remove stale references or change them to the replacement account, while preserving any policy bindings that are still required.
- Check the controller’s permissions and Workload Identity binding, then allow time for IAM propagation before judging the next reconciliation result.
If the controller continues to report an invalid identity after the account exists, compare the project reference in the resource with the project in the controller’s deployment and inspect debug output for the exact email it attempted to resolve.
8. Retry with evidence and debug logging
After each change, retry the smallest operation that reproduces the problem. Enable the product’s debug mode where available and record:
- the project ID and service-account email actually used;
- the API or deployment operation;
- the credential source and application or CLI version;
- the HTTP status and complete error text, with private-key material removed; and
- whether the retry occurred after IAM changes had time to propagate.
Use a fully qualified service-account email wherever an email is required. Avoid substituting the literal string default, a display name, a namespace, or an account ID copied from a different project.

Quick Recap
Common failure patterns and the correct response
| Pattern | Why the obvious fix fails | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| The account was recreated but the error remains | Policies and resources still reference the deleted account’s identity or the new account is in another project. | Update stale policy resources and verify the exact project and email used by the workload. |
| A new JSON key was downloaded but Firebase Admin still rejects it | The application is reading a different path, secret, or environment; or the file is not a service-account certificate. | Validate the loaded file, its type field, readability, and deployment secret rather than only the local download. |
| Changing IAM roles did nothing | Roles cannot repair a nonexistent account, wrong project, malformed certificate, or invalid account value. | Resolve identity and credential validity first, then check the product-required role and impersonation path. |
Removing default fixed one deployment but broke another |
Different environments may intentionally select different accounts, and a hard-coded email can point at the wrong project. | Use an explicit, environment-appropriate email and verify its existence and permissions in each target project. |
| The first retry still fails after an IAM change | IAM updates may not be visible immediately to every service. | Wait for propagation, retry with debug logs, and compare the identity in the new request with the identity you intended. |
Prevent the error from returning
- Document the owning project and exact service-account email beside each deployment or integration configuration.
- Use explicit project references instead of relying on namespace-derived defaults in Config Connector.
- Keep service-account certificate fields together and validate the JSON shape before deploying it.
- Store credentials in a protected secret mechanism and rotate keys deliberately, updating every consumer before revoking the old key.
- Review IAM bindings and Workload Identity Federation mappings whenever an account is deleted, renamed, or replaced.
- Pin and periodically review Firebase CLI and SDK versions, consulting their release notes when a deployment begins sending an unexpected account value.
- Keep a redacted record of the last known-good project, account, API, and client version so a future failure can be compared quickly.
