An ISDone.dll, Unarc.dll, checksum, or “An error occurred while unpacking” message usually means the installer could not decompress, verify, read, or write game data. The DLL named in the dialog is often the component reporting the failure—not a missing Windows file that should be downloaded.
Work through the causes in this order: verify the installer, check temporary and destination space, use a short local path with suitable permissions, review security software, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then test memory and storage. If the archive itself fails verification, replace the installer instead of repeatedly repairing Windows.
Why ISDone.dll and Unarc.dll errors happen
Installers expand compressed archives while checking their contents and writing thousands of files. A failure can therefore come from several layers:
- Incomplete, modified, or corrupted installer files
- Insufficient space on the destination, Windows, or temporary drive
- A full or restricted temporary directory
- Antivirus quarantine or ransomware protection
- Access permissions or an incompatible path
- A disabled or unusually small page file
- Unstable RAM, CPU overclock, or overheating
- Filesystem, SSD, hard-drive, or USB-device errors
- Corrupted Windows components
- A defective installer package
Messages such as Unable to read data, File does not match checksum, CRC check failed, and Archive corrupted are useful clues, but numeric Unarc.dll codes do not have one authoritative cause. A repeatable failure at one percentage can indicate one damaged archive or a destination-write problem; varying failures across several games point more toward memory, storage, security software, or Windows.

Before changing Windows, verify the game installer
- Cancel the installation, restart Windows, and remove only the incomplete game output.
- Confirm that the copy came from the publisher, an authorized store, or trusted physical media.
- Use the store’s repair or verification feature, or compare the publisher’s published checksums.
- For multipart downloads, place every part in one folder and confirm that every part finished downloading.
- Redownload the affected archive when verification fails.
Highly compressed or modified third-party packages have greater integrity and support risks. The safest remedy is an official store or publisher installer; Windows commands cannot reconstruct a damaged archive.
Quick fixes to try first
1. Make room on every relevant drive
Check the destination drive, the Windows drive (normally C:), and the temporary location. Decompression may need substantially more working space than the game’s advertised installed size, so leave a generous margin. Avoid installing to a nearly full SSD, network share, unreliable USB device, or external drive that disconnects or overheats.
2. Move the files to a simple local path
Place the installer in a folder such as C:InstallersGameName and choose C:GamesGameName or D:GamesGameName as the destination. Avoid very long paths, cloud placeholders, network locations, removable media, restrictive folders, and unusual symbols. This is a compatibility measure, not a guaranteed cure.
3. Unblock and elevate the installer
- Right-click the installer and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, select Unblock if it appears, then select Apply.
- Right-click the file again and choose Run as administrator.
- Install to a folder where your account has write access.
Administrator mode can resolve access-denied errors, but it cannot repair corrupt archives or failing hardware.

4. Check Windows Security
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. If a trusted, independently verified installer component was quarantined, restore or allow that item and retry. Use any exclusion only temporarily and remove it afterward. Never permanently disable Defender or another antivirus to make an unknown installer run. 5. Close competing software
Exit overlays, hardware-monitoring tools, backup and synchronization clients, archiving utilities, launchers scanning the same folder, and aggressive anti-ransomware controls. If the installer works only after startup software is removed, use a clean boot to isolate the conflict; Microsoft documents that approach here: Windows troubleshooting guidance.
Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Run these in an elevated Command Prompt when several installers fail or Windows shows other corruption symptoms. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- Wait for completion, then run:
sfc /scannow- Restart Windows and retry the installation.
Use Microsoft’s full procedure at the System File Checker documentation. “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means protected Windows files were not found corrupt. “Found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means restart and test. If SFC cannot repair some files, investigate the Windows image or repair source. A clean SFC result does not prove that the game archive, RAM, or drive is healthy.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents a compatible local source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessC:RepairSourceWindows is only an example; replace it with a real source from the same or compatible Windows installation.
Restore the page file to System managed size
Large compressed installers can create substantial memory pressure. A disabled or unusually small page file may contribute to failures on systems with limited RAM. In Windows 10, open Control Panel → System → Advanced system settings → Advanced → Performance Settings → Advanced → Virtual memory. Select Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, or choose System managed size for a local Windows drive with adequate space, then restart.
Do not copy fixed “1.5× RAM” values from another PC. Increasing the page file can help memory management, but it cannot fix a damaged archive, defective RAM, or a failing disk. Microsoft discusses page-file memory management in its DISM best-practices documentation: Microsoft Learn.

Test memory and storage when failures repeat
Memory and stability
If unrelated games fail at different percentages, or the computer freezes, reboots, crashes, or blue-screens, return CPU, RAM, and GPU settings to defaults. Temporarily disable XMP, DOCP, or EXPO memory profiles and run Windows Memory Diagnostic or a reputable bootable memory test. If errors appear, test modules individually. No single Unarc.dll number proves bad RAM.
Drive and filesystem
Suspect storage when checksum failures recur, large-file copies fail, Windows logs I/O errors, the PC freezes during disk activity, or only one target drive causes the error. Check the drive with its manufacturer’s health utility and review Event Viewer for disk or filesystem errors. Back up important data before repeated repairs on a drive showing warning signs.
For a filesystem check, open an elevated Command Prompt and substitute the affected letter:
chkdsk /f X:Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance describes this process: Microsoft support. Do not use /r routinely on an SSD; reserve intensive scans for a specific diagnostic reason. Copying the installer to another healthy local drive is a useful isolation test, not proof by itself that the original drive has failed.

- Do not download
isdone.dllorunarc.dllfrom generic DLL websites. - Do not overwrite

- Do not treat a code such as
-11or-12as a definitive diagnosis. - Do not install Visual C++ or DirectX runtime DLLs individually; those prerequisites usually address launch failures, not archive extraction.
Microsoft also warns against manually replacing missing installer-cache files with copies from another PC; use supported vendor or recovery methods instead: Microsoft’s installer-cache guidance.
When to redownload, contact the publisher, or replace hardware

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s ordinary Windows 10 support lifecycle ended on October 14, 2025. The PC can still run games, but normal free security fixes, technical assistance, and Windows Update support ended for that lifecycle; edition-specific extended-support arrangements may differ. This does not make every ISDone.dll error a Windows 10 problem. Check hardware compatibility, licensing, backups, and application support before considering an operating-system upgrade.
