ReShade is free post-processing software that injects shader effects into a game’s rendered image. It works with many Windows games using Direct3D 9–12, OpenGL or Vulkan, but “any game” is not a guarantee: anti-cheat, unusual renderers, translation layers and old APIs can require a different approach or make installation unsuitable.
This guide covers the normal installation, API selection, shaders, presets, verification, troubleshooting and clean removal.
Before you install ReShade
- Use a Windows PC. ReShade’s listed minimum systems are Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or Windows 11, with .NET Framework 4.8 for the setup tool. Windows 10 or 11 is the practical choice today. See the current requirements at reshade.me.
- Launch the game without ReShade first. This gives you a known-good baseline.
- Make sure you can modify the game’s installation folder.
- Find the executable that actually renders the game, not a launcher, crash reporter, patcher or configuration utility.
- For multiplayer, check the publisher’s current rules first. Anti-cheat systems can block or flag ReShade, and policies can change after game or anti-cheat updates. Never bypass anti-cheat or hide an injector.
Find the real game executable
In Steam, right-click the game, choose Manage and then Browse local files. In other launchers, use Open installation folder or its equivalent. If several executables are present, start with the one in the main game directory that displays the game itself. The current setup tool examines the executable’s architecture and modules, downloads compatibility information and may redirect you to a game-specific installation target; follow that recommendation rather than guessing (setup source).
Download the correct ReShade build
Download the installer only from the official ReShade site. As checked on August 18, 2026, the site lists ReShade 6.8.0, released August 2, 2026.

Do not download redistributed DLLs or shader archives from random sites. If Windows security software warns about the installer, confirm that it came from reshade.me, verify its digital signature where available, and scan it. Do not blindly disable antivirus protection.
Install ReShade step by step
- Run the setup executable. Close the game before continuing.
- Select the game. Browse to its actual
.exe. If setup offers to manage an existing ReShade installation, use that option instead of layering another copy. - Confirm the rendering API. Accept detection only when it matches the renderer the game is using. Otherwise select the correct API manually.
- Choose effects. Install the standard effect collection when prompted unless your preset documents different repositories. Presets often need additional shaders, textures, LUTs or fonts.
- Finish setup. Close the installer before launching the game.
- Start the game. ReShade normally shows a banner or tutorial on first launch.
- Open the overlay. Use the shortcut shown by the current build, or change it under ReShade’s Settings tab. Do not assume one universal key combination.
Choose DirectX, OpenGL or Vulkan correctly
The choice depends on the game’s active renderer, not the API supported by Windows or your graphics card. ReShade officially lists Direct3D 9, Direct3D 10, Direct3D 11, Direct3D 12, OpenGL and Vulkan (official compatibility list).

Use the renderer selected in the game’s own graphics settings. Automatic identification is useful but not infallible; the official troubleshooting guidance notes that it can be wrong (ReShade troubleshooting guide). The setup source detects D3D9, DXGI/D3D10–12, DirectDraw, OpenGL and Vulkan, can prioritize Vulkan when both Vulkan and DXGI appear, and uses compatibility-list overrides (setup source).

Install shaders and presets
Add the official shader repository
- Download the official repository from crosire/reshade-shaders.
- Extract it.
- Open the in-game ReShade menu and select Settings.
- Add the repository’s
Shadersfolder to Effect Search Paths. - Add its
Texturesfolder to Texture Search Paths. - Return to Home and click Reload.
A shader is one effect; a shader repository is a collection of effects and textures; a preset is usually an .ini file containing effect selections and settings. A preset can load while looking broken if required files are missing.
Load a preset
- Download the preset’s
.inifrom a source you trust. - Store it in the game folder or a dedicated presets folder.
- Open ReShade in the game and choose the file in the preset selector.
- Install every shader repository or texture dependency named by the preset author.
- Enable effects on the Home tab and save changes to a new preset rather than overwriting the original.
Preset screenshots are not guarantees: different monitors, HDR settings, game versions, missing textures and shader revisions can change the result.
Verify that ReShade is working
- A ReShade banner, tutorial or overlay appears during startup.
- The in-game interface opens and its Home page lists effects or presets.
- Toggle one inexpensive effect, such as a color adjustment, and compare it with the effect disabled.
- Check frame rate and frametime with effects off and on. Sharpening and color changes are often light; ambient occlusion, depth effects, ray-style effects and stacked filters can cost substantially more.
ReShade automatically disables depth information during multiplayer to prevent exploitation (official site). Depth-of-field and ambient-occlusion effects can also show halos, incorrect edges or noise, while excessive sharpening can create bright outlines.

Fix common ReShade problems
The overlay does not appear
- Confirm that you selected the executable that actually launches the rendered game.
- Recheck the API and the game’s renderer.
- Make sure the launcher is not starting a different executable.
- Check that ReShade was installed in the correct folder and that the game is not using a separate compatibility layer.
- Try the shortcut displayed in ReShade and change it in Settings if another application intercepts it.
- Read the ReShade log in the game directory for initialization errors.
The game crashes immediately
- Close the game and reopen the official ReShade setup tool.
- Select the same executable and choose the relevant API.
- Use the manage-existing-installation or uninstall option.
- Confirm that the unmodified game launches.
- Reinstall with the corrected API.
- If it still fails, disable or remove one conflicting injector or overlay at a time.
Possible conflicts include MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, capture tools, other post-processing injectors, game-specific DLL mods, HDR tools, Vulkan layers and anti-cheat. Black screen or broken rendering
Recheck the API, executable and installation target first. Do not indiscriminately rename or delete DLLs. An older troubleshooting note mentions renaming dxgi to d3d11 for some DirectX 11 cases, but that workaround is game- and version-dependent, not a universal fix.
The shader archive will not download
Check the connection and firewall, then rerun the official installer. As a fallback, download the official repository from GitHub and add its Shaders and Textures paths manually. Avoid unknown mirrors.

Anti-cheat rejects the game
Stop troubleshooting around the protection. Check the publisher’s current policy and uninstall ReShade if it is not explicitly allowed. A previously working setup can be blocked after a game, anti-cheat or ReShade update.
Vulkan, DXVK or RTX Remix behaves differently
Vulkan installations use special handling, and DXVK or NVIDIA RTX Remix may mean that a game described as “DirectX” is actually running through another layer. The setup tool includes dedicated logic for these cases (setup source). Follow the relevant project’s instructions instead of copying DLLs manually.

DirectX 8
DirectX 8 is not a normal direct-install target. The setup tool warns that these games need a d3d8to9 wrapper to convert calls to Direct3D 9. The wrapper is available at github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases. Install the wrapper first, verify the game, then install ReShade against the resulting Direct3D 9 path.

DirectDraw, Glide and DirectX 1–7
Very old games may need a wrapper such as DXGL or dgVoodoo2 before ReShade can attach. This advanced path has a higher risk of crashes, rendering errors and conflicts; use the wrapper project’s instructions and keep a clean backup of the original game files.
How to uninstall ReShade safely
Preferred method
- Run the official ReShade setup tool.
- Select the game executable and the relevant API.
- Choose the uninstall option when offered.
- Launch the game without ReShade to verify recovery.
Manual fallback
Use manual deletion only if setup cannot remove the installation and you have confirmed file ownership. ReShade commonly installs ReShade.ini, a preset .ini, the reshade-shaders folder and an API-specific module such as d3d9.dll, d3d10.dll, d3d11.dll, dxgi.dll or opengl32.dll (official troubleshooting guide). A similarly named DLL may belong to another mod, loader or the game itself, so do not delete it without checking.
What ReShade can—and cannot—do
ReShade applies post-processing around the rendered image: color correction, sharpening, anti-aliasing, bloom, ambient occlusion, depth of field, film grain, contrast and saturation adjustments, among other ReShade FX shaders. It does not replace the engine or upgrade textures, and it cannot guarantee a better image. Use a preset-first workflow for a known look; use manual setup when you want minimal overhead or a troubleshooting baseline. Add one repository or preset at a time so a crash or visual defect has an identifiable cause.
The Bottom Line
Install the standard ReShade 6.8.0 build from reshade.me, target the game’s real executable, match its active API, then add shaders and presets through ReShade’s search paths. Keep anti-cheat rules, performance costs and a clean uninstall path in mind.
