The WordPress message “The link you followed has expired. Please try again” usually does not mean a hyperlink is broken or that your server is down. It means WordPress rejected the request because its one-time security token (a nonce) was no longer valid. Reload the relevant admin page, repeat the action, and clear browser and site caches. If the error returns, isolate a plugin, check PHP upload limits when media is involved, and look for a plugin update when the message appears on a connection or cloud screen.

What the message actually means
WordPress adds a nonce (a short-lived, one-time security token) to many dashboard forms, settings links, uploads and AJAX requests. When you submit the form, WordPress checks that token before processing the request. A page that has been open for a long time, a request that takes a long time to finish, or a cached copy of an old form can carry a token WordPress will no longer accept. The result is the “The link you followed has expired” screen.

The same message can also be triggered by a plugin defect or by an upload that exceeds the PHP limits configured on the server. The correct fix depends on where and when the message appears.
Fastest safe fix: reload and submit again
- Note what you were doing, such as saving a settings page, uploading media, or connecting a plugin.
- Use the dashboard navigation to open that page again rather than using the browser’s Back button. Opening a fresh page generates a new nonce.
- Repeat the action immediately. For an upload, select the file again; for a settings screen, re-enter any values that were not saved.
If the second attempt succeeds, the original page most likely contained an expired token. Do not repeatedly submit the old browser tab: every retry from that stale tab can fail for the same reason.

Clear cached copies of the WordPress form
A cache can serve an old admin form after WordPress has generated a new token. Clear caches in layers, testing after each change so you know which layer was involved.
- Clear the browser cache for the site, or open a private window and sign in again. A private window is a quick diagnostic; it does not permanently clear the normal profile’s cache.
- Purge the cache in any WordPress caching plugin. Temporarily pause its page and object caching features while testing the affected screen.
- Flush any host-level or reverse-proxy cache available to the site administrator. If you do not control that layer, ask the host to purge the site’s cache.
- In the dashboard, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes without changing the permalink structure. This flushes rewrite rules, a step recommended by WPZOOM for this symptom.
- Open a new dashboard tab and try the operation once more.
Never cache authenticated dashboard pages as a permanent workaround. Admin forms need fresh, user-specific security tokens; excluding /wp-admin/ and logged-in sessions from page caching is safer than repeatedly purging a cache.

Find a plugin conflict without guessing
If refreshing and cache clearing do not help, a plugin conflict is a common next suspect, especially when no new theme or plugin was recently installed. A plugin can alter the request, output a stale form, or terminate the request with its own error.

Test plugins one at a time
- Make a current backup and, if possible, perform the test on a staging copy. Deactivating a security, commerce or caching plugin on a live site can temporarily remove important protection or functionality.
- Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins.
- Deactivate one plugin, preferably the one associated with the failing screen or the most recently updated plugin.
- Open a fresh copy of the affected page and repeat the action.
- If the error remains, reactivate that plugin and test the next one. Keep a simple list of each plugin and result.
- When the error disappears, reactivate the other plugins and leave the suspected plugin disabled while you check for an update or contact its developer.
Supporthost recommends this one-at-a-time approach because it identifies the smallest change that restores the request. Disabling every plugin at once may make the error vanish, but it does not tell you which component caused it.
Use Query Monitor for a targeted clue
Query Monitor can show which code path called wp_die(), the function WordPress and plugins commonly use to stop a request and display an error page. Install and enable it only for troubleshooting, reproduce the error, and inspect the request and caller information. A call attributed to a specific plugin is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof that the plugin is defective; confirm by disabling that plugin and repeating the test.
Example: a settings submenu can fail even with a default theme
A WordPress.org support discussion traced this message on W3 Total Cache settings submenus with Query Monitor. The report reproduced the problem using a default theme, which is a reminder that changing themes is not the first diagnostic step when the failing URL belongs to a plugin. Test the plugin that owns the screen before replacing a working theme.

Fix upload-related occurrences by checking PHP limits
When the message appears while uploading an image, video or other large file, verify the server limits before changing nonce settings. WPBeginner identifies low upload_max_filesize and post_max_size values as a frequent cause.
Read the active values in WordPress
- Open Tools → Site Health.
- Select the Info tab, expand Server, and note
upload_max_filesizeandpost_max_size. - Compare both values with the file size and with the limits shown in Media → Add New. The request body must fit within
post_max_size, and the file itself must fit withinupload_max_filesize.
The values shown in Site Health are the values PHP is actually using for the request. A value in a local configuration file is not useful if the host overrides it.
Raise the limits through the server configuration
Use the configuration method supported by your host or PHP runtime: a hosting control panel, php.ini, a user-level PHP configuration file, or (where supported) .htaccess. Set both directives high enough for the intended file size, while staying within your host’s memory, execution-time and storage limits. For example, a host may accept settings such as:

post_max_size = 256MThe numbers above are an example configuration, not a universal recommendation. Some hosts ignore these files or require a PHP-FPM restart; ask the host for the supported method. After changing the values, return to Tools → Site Health → Info → Server and confirm that the new values are active, then retry the upload from a freshly opened media page.

Do not confuse a size limit with a timeout
A file can be below both size limits and still fail if the connection times out, PHP runs out of memory, or a security layer blocks the file type. If Site Health shows adequate limits and only one plugin’s uploader fails, follow the plugin-conflict path instead of continually increasing PHP values.

Plugin-specific errors often require a code fix or an update rather than a WordPress setting. Search the plugin’s public support forum, issue tracker and changelog for the exact wording, the affected version and the date of the report. Back up the site before updating, and test the connection again from a newly opened screen after the update.

A 2026 GitHub pull request for Elementor MCP is a concrete example: cloud action URLs returned HTTP 403 with this message because nonce-bearing URLs were encoded incorrectly. The proposed fix changed plugin code, so clearing caches or increasing server upload limits would not address that particular defect. This pattern applies broadly: if the message occurs only on a plugin’s cloud or connection action, check for a release that mentions nonce handling, URL encoding, authorization or 403 responses.
What to include in a plugin support report
- WordPress version, PHP version and the plugin version.
- The exact dashboard path and button you clicked.
- Whether the issue occurs for every administrator or only one account.
- Whether a fresh browser session, cache purge and a single-plugin test changed the result.
- The request status code, if shown, and the Query Monitor caller information.
- A sanitized copy of the URL or request parameters; never post active nonces, passwords or access tokens.
Fallback: changing nonce behavior in wp-config.php
A support thread suggests increasing nonce values in wp-config.php as a workaround. Treat this as a last resort, not the primary repair. A longer-lived token can hide a stale-cache problem, an upload-limit problem or a plugin bug, while weakening the time window in which a captured token might be useful.
Do not paste an unverified constant from a forum into production. WordPress core does not provide a general “make every nonce last longer” setting that is safe for every version and plugin. If a developer gives you a version-specific change, make a backup, document the original file, apply it only in a controlled environment, and remove it once the underlying plugin or caching issue is fixed. Never edit wp-config.php through a form that might expose its contents; use your host’s protected file manager or deployment process.

Prevent the error from returning
- Open important dashboard forms shortly before saving instead of leaving them in a tab overnight.
- Exclude authenticated dashboard pages and logged-in sessions from page caching.
- Keep WordPress, themes and plugins updated, especially integrations that build cloud or authorization URLs.
- Set upload limits based on the largest file your editors actually need, and verify the active PHP values after hosting changes.
- Use staging for plugin and configuration tests, and keep a rollback backup before changing PHP settings or
wp-config.php. - Record which page, user, file size and plugin versions reproduce an error; that information separates an expired token from a reproducible code defect.
When to involve your host or plugin developer
Contact the host when Site Health does not reflect your PHP changes, the server cache cannot be purged, or the request ends in a timeout or 403 despite valid limits. Contact the plugin developer when one plugin reproduces the message with other plugins disabled, when Query Monitor identifies that plugin, or when the failure is confined to its cloud or connection workflow. Include the diagnostic details listed above and avoid sharing live security tokens.
There is no established published statistic showing how often this message occurs, so frequency alone cannot identify the cause. The reliable signal is the reproduction pattern: a one-off failure after an idle tab points to a nonce or cache; a large-file-only failure points to PHP limits; and a single, repeatable plugin action points to that plugin’s implementation.
