If Windows 7 reports that msvcp140.dll is missing, do not download that single file from a DLL mirror. The supported repair is to install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads page, using the architecture required by the program that will not start. If the runtime is already present, choose Repair in the installer; if the application still fails, reinstall that application using its vendor’s instructions.
What the msvcp140.dll error means
msvcp140.dll is a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime component. It is not a game, utility, or independently supported application. Programs compiled with Microsoft Visual C++ can rely on this runtime for standard C++ functions. When Windows cannot locate a compatible copy while a program is launching, it may display messages such as “msvcp140.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because msvcp140.dll is missing from your computer,” or “Downloading msvcp140.dll” in a search result.

The file is delivered as part of the Visual C++ Redistributable package. Microsoft’s deployment guidance describes missing runtime DLLs as a cause of application-start failures and identifies the redistributable package—not a loose DLL—as the supported way to deploy the required files. The v14 redistributable used by Visual Studio 2015 and later is an in-place, cumulative runtime with binary compatibility across supported toolsets. That means a later compatible package can satisfy an application built with an earlier supported v14 toolset, provided the package architecture matches the application.

Why Windows 7 shows this message
The runtime was never installed
Some installers assume that the Visual C++ runtime is already on the computer. If the program’s setup did not include it, or if Windows 7 was reinstalled without the application prerequisites, the program can fail at its first launch.
The runtime was removed or damaged
A cleanup operation, incomplete uninstall, disk problem, or interrupted update can leave the redistributable incomplete. The DLL may be absent, or the installed package may no longer be usable. In that situation, repairing the package restores the complete runtime rather than only one filename.
The application and package architectures differ
A 32-bit application normally needs the x86 redistributable, even when it is running on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs the x64 package. Windows’ own architecture is therefore not enough information; identify the architecture of the affected application.

An application built with a later MSVC toolset can require a redistributable version newer than the one currently installed. The installed package must be the same version or later than the build tools used for that application.

The application’s own deployment is incomplete
Some programs deploy their dependencies during setup. If the application was copied from another computer, restored from an incomplete backup, or only partially updated, reinstalling it may be necessary after the system runtime has been repaired.
Is it safe to download msvcp140.dll?
Downloading a single DLL from an unverified mirror is not the safe solution. You cannot reliably establish that the file is genuine, complete, the correct architecture, or compatible with the application. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the program’s folder can also create version conflicts and leaves other required runtime components unresolved.
Use Microsoft’s complete Visual C++ Redistributable installer instead. The package is the supported deployment method, installs the associated runtime components together, and provides a repair path when the package is already registered. Keep the exact error and the name of the program that produces it; those details determine which architecture and application-specific recovery path to use.
Before you start
- Write down the complete error text, including whether it names a particular application.
- Determine whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 32-bit program uses x86; a 64-bit program uses x64.
- Close the program and any launcher or updater associated with it.
- Use an account permitted to install software on the Windows 7 computer.
- Have the application’s original installer or its vendor’s official reinstall instructions available in case the runtime repair is not sufficient.
- Do not delete or replace individual DLL files before running the official package installer.
Step-by-step fix
1. Record the program and exact message
Note the executable that fails, when the message appears, and whether it started after an update, a Windows reinstall, or removal of another program. This prevents you from repairing the wrong application and gives the vendor useful information if a reinstall is required. If several unrelated programs show the same message, treat that as evidence of a system-wide runtime problem and continue with the redistributable repair first.

2. Open Microsoft’s supported download page
In a browser, open Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads page. Select the Visual C++ v14 redistributable installer offered for the application’s architecture. Microsoft publishes separate architecture packages on that page, so do not select a package solely because it matches the Windows edition.
| Affected application | Installer architecture to choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 32-bit application | x86 | The program’s compiled architecture determines the runtime it loads. |
| 64-bit application | x64 | A 64-bit executable requires the 64-bit runtime components. |
| Architecture unknown | Check the application vendor’s documentation or installer | Windows 7’s own bitness does not identify the program’s architecture. |
If the vendor explicitly documents a different prerequisite, follow that documentation. The objective is a redistributable version at least as recent as the MSVC build tools used to create the application.
3. Run the redistributable installer
Open the downloaded Microsoft installer and accept its license terms when prompted. Allow the setup program to complete. It may install the runtime, update an older compatible installation, or report that the same package is already present.
4. Choose Repair when the package is already installed
If setup reports that the runtime is already installed and offers maintenance options, select Repair. Repair replaces or re-registers the complete package components that the application expects. Do not cancel merely because the installer found an existing installation; an existing entry does not prove that every file is intact.

You must have a key code to use the install option otherwise you will get a non-genuine message.
5. Restart and test the original application
Restart Windows after the installer finishes, then launch the same application that produced the error. Test the original executable rather than a shortcut to a different edition. If it opens normally, the runtime deployment was the missing prerequisite. Keep the installer’s result available in case another program requires a different architecture.
6. Reinstall the affected application if the error remains
If the message is unchanged after the correct redistributable has been installed or repaired, reinstall the affected application using its vendor’s official instructions. The application setup may deploy additional dependencies, restore files in its own installation directory, or apply a version-specific configuration. Uninstalling and reinstalling should be done only after you have saved game files, settings, licenses, or other data that the application does not automatically preserve.
After reinstalling, apply the application’s own updates according to its vendor instructions and test again. If the program still fails, provide the vendor with the exact error, application version, Windows 7 edition, and whether the x86 or x64 redistributable was installed.
Choosing between runtime repair and application reinstall
| Method | Source authority | Architecture and version handling | What it deploys | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable install or Repair | Microsoft, the runtime publisher | Choose x86 or x64 for the affected application; the installed version must be at least as recent as the build toolset | The complete redistributable runtime package | The error appears before one or more applications start, or the runtime may be missing or damaged |
| Reinstall the affected application | The application’s own vendor | Uses the prerequisites and architecture specified by that application’s installer | The application plus dependencies that its setup deploys | The redistributable repair succeeds but the application still has missing or damaged files |
| Loose DLL download and manual copy | Unverified third party | Architecture, version, authenticity, and completeness are uncertain | One file, not the full runtime | Not a supported repair method |
Troubleshooting branches when the first repair does not work
The installer says the runtime is present, but the same error appears
Run the installer again and select Repair, then restart Windows before testing. Confirm that you repaired the architecture used by the application: an x86 program can continue to fail if only x64 was repaired. If more than one program is affected, check whether both 32-bit and 64-bit applications are involved and install the corresponding Microsoft packages rather than assuming one architecture covers both.

You selected the wrong architecture
Return to the application’s documentation or setup program and identify whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. Install the matching package and repeat the repair. Do not infer the answer from the computer’s Windows 7 bitness; a 64-bit edition can run 32-bit programs that need x86 components.
The application was copied instead of installed
A copied program may lack the dependencies its installer normally places on the computer. Obtain the application’s official installer, remove the incomplete installation if the vendor instructs you to do so, and reinstall it after repairing the Microsoft runtime. Preserve personal data before uninstalling.
The application needs a newer runtime
Install the current supported v14 redistributable listed by Microsoft, subject to the installer’s Windows compatibility requirements. Microsoft’s rule is that the installed redistributable must be the same version or later than the MSVC Build Tools used to create the application. If the application vendor specifies a prerequisite version, use that requirement as the deciding reference.

The installer cannot complete on this computer
Read the installer’s own message rather than substituting a DLL from another source. Windows 7 is no longer a supported Windows version, and current runtime packages may have operating-system requirements that the computer cannot satisfy. The reliable long-term remedy is to move the machine to a supported Windows release, then install the application and its runtime prerequisites there. Do not bypass an operating-system requirement by copying runtime files manually.
The error returns after a successful launch
Record which application triggers it and whether the recurrence follows an update, restore, or partial uninstall. Re-run the matching redistributable Repair and then reinstall that application if necessary. A recurring failure limited to one program points toward that program’s deployment; failures across unrelated programs point toward a shared runtime installation or the unsupported operating-system environment.
Windows 7 support and the long-term fix
Microsoft lists Windows 7 among Windows versions that are no longer supported. A redistributable repair can address the immediate missing-runtime message, but it does not restore security support or make the operating system current. If the computer is used online, plan an upgrade to a supported Windows release when the hardware and application requirements allow it. Check the application vendor’s compatibility information before moving the installation, and keep backups of saved games and configuration files.
On the upgraded system, install the application from its official installer and use the Microsoft redistributable package appropriate to that application. This avoids carrying forward an incomplete copied installation and gives the program a supported runtime environment.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not download
msvcp140.dllfrom a DLL-mirror site. - Do not copy an isolated DLL into
System32,SysWOW64, or an application folder as a substitute for the runtime installer. - Do not assume an x64 package supplies the x86 runtime required by a 32-bit program.
- Do not treat an installer’s “already installed” message as proof that the package is healthy; use Repair when offered.
- Do not keep reinstalling the application without checking the runtime architecture and version requirement.
- Do not ignore Windows 7’s unsupported status if the computer remains connected to the internet.
