The fastest way to fix multiplayer lag in The Planet Crafter is to identify what “lag” means first. Low FPS, periodic base stutters, rubber-banding, delayed interactions, and failed joins have different causes. Start by restarting Steam for every player, matching game versions, disabling or updating mods, and backing up the shared save. Then use the tests below to separate a graphics problem from simulation, host-network, or save issues.
Quick fixes to try first
- Close and restart The Planet Crafter.
- Fully exit and restart Steam on every player’s PC.
- Confirm everyone is using the same game version, branch, and mod setup.
- Back up the shared save before dismantling a base or changing configuration.
- Cap the affected PC at 60 FPS or lower.
- Lower resolution and graphics quality, then test V-Sync off.
- Have the strongest and most stable PC host the session.
- Use wired Ethernet for the host if possible.
- Temporarily reduce drones, autocrafters, machines, loose items, and dense automation.
Miju Games’ announcements repeatedly advise restarting Steam, matching versions, and removing or updating mods when multiplayer problems occur. See the official Steam announcements.

First, identify the kind of lag
| What you see | Most likely category | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Choppy camera and a low FPS counter | GPU or local rendering limit | Lower resolution and graphics quality |
| A hitch every few seconds, especially at the base | CPU/simulation workload, automation, or autosave | Temporarily reduce drones, autocrafters, and loose items |
| The host is smooth but a guest rubber-bands or sees delayed actions | Connection or host-side synchronization | Try a wired host connection and swap hosts |
| Everyone freezes in the same area | Shared-world simulation or a save/location issue | Travel away from the base and test a new save |
| Players cannot join after an update | Version, Steam, mod, or firewall problem | Restart Steam and match versions on every PC |
| FPS looks normal but interactions are delayed | Network synchronization rather than rendering | Compare host and guest behavior |
Check FPS instead of guessing
Enable Steam’s in-game performance overlay and compare the host and guest during exploration, inside the main base, and while the stutter is happening. This is diagnostic guidance, not a guaranteed formula, but the pattern is useful:
- GPU usage is near full and FPS improves after lowering resolution: the PC is probably rendering too much.
- GPU usage is low or unchanged while FPS remains poor: CPU simulation, synchronization, or world complexity is more likely.
- Only one player has low FPS: focus on that player’s hardware and settings.
- Everyone hitches at the same moment: the shared simulation or host is more suspicious.
- FPS is normal but movement or interactions arrive late: investigate networking and synchronization.
Fix low FPS on the affected PC
- Cap the frame rate at 60 FPS. If the system cannot hold 60 consistently, use a lower stable cap.
- Lower resolution. This is especially important on integrated graphics, ultrawide displays, and high-resolution monitors.
- Lower overall quality and view distance if those options are available in the current build.
- Test V-Sync off. Some players report smoother behavior with V-Sync disabled, but results vary. Use a frame cap to control GPU load and tearing.
- Try fullscreen and borderless modes if one display mode stutters.
- Use the dedicated GPU on a laptop. Plug the laptop in and select a performance-oriented Windows power mode.
- Close competing software such as browsers, recording tools, overlays, RGB utilities, and background downloads.
The game’s official troubleshooting FAQ recommends lowering quality and resolution and limiting the frame rate to 60 FPS or less. Lower settings will not necessarily fix a CPU-bound world or network delay.

Test the host PC and connection
Community troubleshooting describes the multiplayer session as dependent on one player’s machine rather than a separately hosted dedicated server. Treat that as a community description of the current setup, not a formal networking specification. In practice, the host’s CPU load, upload stability, and connection quality can affect guests.
- Try the strongest desktop or most stable PC as host.
- Prefer wired Ethernet for the host.
- Stop downloads, cloud synchronization, streaming, VPNs, and other upload-heavy activity.
- Test with players close to the host’s location in the world, then while split up.
- Safely test another player as host. If the problem follows the original host, the host PC or connection is more likely involved.
Do not assume high download speed alone solves the problem. Latency, packet loss, upload stability, and host CPU load can matter more. Current official sources do not establish a universal port-forwarding recipe, so avoid random port numbers or router changes.
Reduce late-game base and simulation load
If everyone slows down near a mature base while unexplored areas run better, graphics settings may not be the main issue. The official FAQ identifies autocrafters and drone logistics as known causes of periodic stutter and recommends reducing built and loose items. Player reports also describe slowdowns around dense bases, but there is no authoritative universal object-count limit.
Make a small, reversible test by temporarily reducing or relocating:
- autocrafters and excessive drone logistics;
- large groups of machines and production systems;
- dense storage networks;
- tree, algae, animal, butterfly, frog, and other life-generation equipment;
- large quantities of loose items;
- unnecessary decorations and concentrated active structures;
- portals or other structures that correlate with the slowdown.
Back up the save first. Do not delete hundreds of structures at once: change one category, reconnect, and compare the result. Removing decorations alone may not help if logistics or machine processing is the real bottleneck.
Match versions, branches, and mods
Every player must use the same game version and branch. Restart Steam on every PC after an update; do not assume Steam has applied the same state everywhere. Disable all mods for a controlled test, and ensure any retained mods support the current build on every machine.
Use a clean, unmodded save if possible. If that works while the old save does not, the issue may involve save complexity, mod data, or a location-specific problem rather than internet latency. Miju Games’ Steam news archive repeatedly advises removing or updating mods when multiplayer problems occur.

Check requirements—but do not treat them as a performance guarantee
Steam currently lists these PC specifications, though store requirements can change:
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics memory | 3 GB VRAM | 6 GB VRAM |
| Storage | 4 GB | 4 GB |
See the Steam store page for the current listing. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee smooth performance in a large, automated shared world. The troubleshooting FAQ also says VRAM use increased after the Procedural Wrecks update, making resolution and quality reductions particularly relevant for older GPUs.
Back up the save before advanced troubleshooting
- Exit the game completely.
- Copy the entire folder below to another drive or a clearly named backup folder:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowMijuGamesPlanet Crafter
Do not rely on Steam Cloud as your only copy. Preserve the original backup before changing mods, registry settings, or the base.
Test a new save
Create a temporary multiplayer save and compare it with the affected world. If the new save is smooth, the old world may be overloaded, modded, damaged, or affected by a particular location. If the new save also lags immediately, focus on drivers, graphics settings, Steam, the host connection, and the current game build.
Emergency recovery
The FAQ describes a recovery attempt using:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowMijuGamesPlanet CrafterBackup.json
After preserving the original files, it says a copy of Backup.json can be renamed to Restored.json or another chosen name. This is an emergency procedure, not a guaranteed repair.
Reset configuration only when necessary
If settings are corrupted, the FAQ points to this registry location:

Export or record your settings first, then delete only the Planet Crafter registry folder if you understand the consequences. This resets configuration; it is not a save-deletion procedure. Do not use registry cleaning tools or make unrelated registry changes.

When to consider hardware
Buy hardware only after the symptom identifies the bottleneck. A GPU upgrade makes sense when GPU usage is high, lowering resolution clearly improves FPS, or the PC uses inadequate integrated graphics. A CPU/platform upgrade is more relevant when the host struggles with a dense automated world while graphics changes do little. A wired Ethernet adapter or cable is more relevant when the host has unstable Wi-Fi. None of these purchases is a guaranteed fix for a corrupted save or version mismatch.
Persistent problems
If the game still fails in a clean new save, with matching versions, no mods, updated drivers, and another host tested, collect the game version, hardware details, symptom pattern, and relevant logs for the official support or Discord channels. Crash files may be found under:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalTempMijuGamesPlanet CrafterCrashes
Avoid reinstalling or deleting the save before making a local backup. Reinstallation may repair damaged files, but it will not automatically solve CPU-bound simulation or connection delay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does only my friend lag in The Planet Crafter multiplayer?
If the host is smooth but the guest rubber-bands or sees delayed interactions, test the host’s connection, background uploads, firewall permissions, and another host. If the guest’s FPS is actually low, troubleshoot that PC’s graphics settings separately.
Why does lowering graphics not fix the lag?
The slowdown may be CPU-bound simulation, automation, synchronization, or network delay. Compare performance away from the base and check whether GPU usage is high.
Is port forwarding required?
The supplied official sources do not establish a current universal port-forwarding procedure. Do not apply random port rules; first match versions, remove mods, check firewall permissions, and test another host.
Can I use a dedicated server to solve multiplayer lag?
The available sources do not verify an official dedicated-server solution. A separate server should not be treated as a guaranteed or standard fix.
