A PS5 item that stays Queued, sits at Calculating, vanishes from Downloads/Uploads, or repeatedly fails is usually a stuck download, license, storage-index, network, or system-software state—not one officially named Sony bug. Work from low-risk fixes to Safe Mode repairs: check PlayStation Network status, retry or remove the queue entry, verify storage and connection, restore licenses, then repair the console database. Do not choose Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) unless you have backed up your data and exhausted the non-destructive options.
The menu paths below reflect Sony’s U.S. support guidance checked August 18, 2026. Labels can change with future system-software updates.
First, identify the symptom
Use the symptom to choose the shortest safe path. A queued disc update, a missing DLC entitlement, and a console-wide network failure can look similar but need different remedies.
| What you see | Likely category | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Queued but absent from Downloads/Uploads | Stale queue or account state | Restart, check Game Library, restore licenses |
| Visible at 0%, 1%, or Calculating | Transfer, storage, or indexing problem | Pause/Resume, then Cancel and Delete |
| One game or DLC fails | Incomplete download, title-specific update, or entitlement | Restore licenses or reinstall that title |
| Every download fails | PSN, network, storage, or system software | Service status, connection test, update, Safe Mode |
| Padlock or license message | Account, purchase, or PlayStation Plus entitlement | Sign in to the purchasing account and restore licenses |
| “Not enough space” despite free storage | Temporary installation space or an inconsistent storage index | Check the product page, free headroom, Repair Console Storage |
Sony’s download guide documents the remedies below, but does not establish one universal, officially named “download queue bug.”

The five-minute fix
1. Check PlayStation Network status
Open the official PlayStation Service Status page. If PlayStation Store or download services show an alert, local changes may not help. Wait for service recovery and try again; Sony places this check near the start of its download troubleshooting flow.
2. Pause and resume
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the affected game, update, DLC, or application.
- Choose Pause, wait a few seconds, then choose Resume.
This is Sony’s first retry action for a download that will not start.
3. Cancel the broken entry and download it again
- Open Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the stuck item and select Cancel and Delete.
- Open Game Library, find the correct game, add-on, or application, and start the download again.
Cancel and Delete removes the queue entry and incomplete local data; it is not a console reset. Deleting a purchased game or application does not remove the entitlement. Sony says it can be downloaded again from Game Library: PS5 storage management.
4. Restart the PS5
Press the PS button, open the power menu, and select Restart PS5. If the interface is frozen, hold the physical power button for about three seconds to turn the console off, then wait until it has shut down before powering it on. Do not unplug a PS5 while its indicator is lit or blinking. A restart preserves console data; Reset PS5 does not.

Confirm usable storage
Go to Settings > Storage and check PS5 console storage. Also check the game’s product page for its required free space. The temporary space needed during installation may not match the final download-size figure, so leave additional headroom rather than treating the displayed file size as a guaranteed minimum.

To remove an unused title, use Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. Delete or move compatible content, then retry. A PS5 game on USB extended storage must be copied to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play; PS4 games can run directly from compatible USB extended storage. Details are in Sony’s storage guide.
Deleting an application is separate from deleting saved data, but back up important saves before removing a game if you are unsure. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is one option; PS4 saves can also be copied to USB through the PS5 saved-data menus.
Test the internet connection
- Open Settings > Network > Connection Status.
- Select Test Internet Connection.
If the test fails or fluctuates, restart the modem and router, try Ethernet, move the console closer to the Wi-Fi access point, and temporarily stop other high-bandwidth activity. These checks address an unstable connection; DNS, MTU, port-forwarding, and Wi-Fi-band changes are optional experiments, not guaranteed fixes for a queue state.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Restore licenses for missing games, DLC, or padlocks
Use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. Sony says this does not affect user data and recommends it when a purchased game or add-on is missing, locked, or cannot be verified: Restore Licenses.
- Sign in to the account that bought the title.
- Confirm the transaction completed in your account history.
- For a PlayStation Plus title, verify that the subscription and catalog entitlement still apply.
- If another account owns the game, check Console Sharing and Offline Play.
After restoring licenses, return to Game Library and start the download again.

Use Safe Mode without wiping the console
Enter Safe Mode
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for three seconds.
- When it is fully off, press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press its PS button.
Sony’s full instructions and option descriptions are in PS5 Safe Mode.
Repair Console Storage
Choose Repair Console Storage (Safe Mode option 3). Sony says this does not erase data. Use it when free-space information looks wrong, an installation loops, or storage-related behavior is inconsistent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Clear the system software cache
Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache. Sony describes cache clearing as useful for system-feature problems or performance drops. Select the cache command—not a reset command.
Rebuild the database
Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. The PS5 scans the drive and creates a fresh content index, which can help with stale icons or an inconsistent queue. Do not interrupt the process; its duration varies with the amount and condition of stored content. Rebuilding is not the same as Reset PS5, although Sony does not promise that it resolves every download failure.
If only one game or update is affected
A targeted reinstall is safer than resetting the entire PS5.
Recommended Free Tools
- Cancel and delete the stuck item from Downloads/Uploads.
- Check Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps for a partial installation and delete that affected game or application.
- Download it again from Game Library. For a disc title, reinstall from the disc, then allow its update to download.
Sony uses this sequence for failed updates and certain errors, including CE-120706-6. This removes application data, not the purchase entitlement. Verify save backups before deleting if there is any uncertainty.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the PS5’s own update process is broken
First try Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Keeping system software current is part of Sony’s download and update troubleshooting: PS5 support.
If the console cannot complete an update, Sony documents an advanced USB update:
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
PS5, then anUPDATEfolder inside it. - Save the official update file as
PS5UPDATE.PUP, using uppercase names. - Ensure about 1.1 GB of free space for the update file.
- Start the PS5 in Safe Mode.
- Choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
Use only the official file and follow Sony’s PS5 system-software instructions. This update path is different from Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), which is destructive.

Choose the next move by symptom
| Symptom after the basic steps | Next action | If it persists |
|---|---|---|
| Queue entry still missing | Confirm edition in Game Library, restore licenses, update system software | Safe Mode cache and database tools |
| One title repeatedly fails | Delete its partial data and reinstall | Contact Support with the title and error code |
| All downloads fail | Check service status, test the network, update the PS5 | Repair storage, rebuild database, then Repairs |
| Storage reading is contradictory | Free temporary headroom and run Repair Console Storage | Rebuild Database; seek support if readings remain wrong |
| Padlock or ownership error | Purchasing account, transaction, Plus entitlement, Console Sharing, Restore Licenses | Account or PlayStation Support |
| Safe Mode will not open | Power off and on again; check power, HDMI, and USB cables | Use Sony’s Repairs path rather than repeatedly unplugging the console |
When to contact Sony
If the queue remains broken after the service, network, license, storage, Safe Mode, and targeted-reinstall steps, record the exact error code, date and time, affected titles, and what you already tried. Capture a screenshot or video if possible, then contact PlayStation Support or Repairs. A problem affecting every download after these checks may indicate storage health, a system-software fault, or another hardware issue. A factory reset is not the automatic next step; if Sony eventually recommends reinstallation, back up saves and other data first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does restoring licenses delete saves?
No. Sony says Restore Licenses does not affect user data. It addresses entitlement verification, not saved-data removal.
Is Restore Default Settings the same as Reset PS5?
No. Sony distinguishes Restore Default Settings, which returns settings to defaults without deleting games, apps, screenshots, clips, or saves, from Reset PS5, which deletes user data. Restore Default Settings is not the primary download-queue fix.
Should I enable Rest Mode downloads?
Automatic downloads require an internet connection in Rest Mode and the relevant automatic-download setting, but Rest Mode is not a universal repair for a broken queue.
