The fix depends on when Riot Client opens. If it appears once after Windows sign-in, disable its startup settings. If it reopens immediately after you close it, remains in the tray, flashes and disappears, or loops after a game launch, fully terminate Riot processes, restart Windows, then work through cache, security, Vanguard and clean-boot checks.
Identify the symptom first

Riot has supported background patching and startup behavior, so a window appearing at sign-in is not automatically malware or a broken installation. Riot also says in a localized support FAQ that, beginning in 2026, PC Riot games launch through Riot Client; availability and behavior can vary by title and region. Quick fix: disable automatic startup
Turn it off in Riot Client
- Open Riot Client and select the Settings gear.
- Look under the general or startup options for a setting such as Open Riot Client on startup.
- Turn it off. The exact label and location can change between client builds.
- Quit Riot from the notification-area icon, then restart Windows.
Disable its Windows startup entry
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Find Riot Client, RiotClientServices or a similarly named Riot entry.
- Right-click it and choose Disable, then restart.
This prevents automatic startup; it does not uninstall Riot Client, League of Legends, VALORANT or Vanguard. Do not disable Vanguard merely to hide the client: Vanguard-dependent games may then refuse to launch.
If Riot Client keeps reopening after you close it
- Close the visible Riot Client window.
- Expand the hidden icons beside the Windows clock. Right-click the Riot icon and choose Exit or Quit, if offered.
- Open Task Manager and end only clearly Riot-related processes, such as Riot Client, RiotClientServices, Riot Client UX/renderer processes and the relevant game launcher.
- Do not terminate random Windows services or delete folders while Riot processes are running.
- Restart Windows and test before making further changes.
Closing the window can minimize Riot Client to the tray while its service remains active. Reports of the client reopening after a game closes are anecdotal, not proof of a universal bug; one example is documented in this community discussion.

Clear Riot’s local cache safely
If startup is disabled but the client still relaunches or will not load, reset local data before reinstalling everything. Cached settings, logs and sign-in data may be lost, so rename folders first.
- Exit Riot Client and all Riot processes.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%and press Enter. - Locate Riot-related folders, especially Riot Games and folders for the affected game.
- Rename the relevant folder by appending
.oldrather than deleting it immediately. - Restart Windows and launch Riot Client.
- If the problem is gone, keep the backup briefly, then delete it only if you no longer need its logs or settings.
Riot’s launch guidance also discusses removing game and Riot folders under C:Users<username>AppDataLocal; installation locations differ, so do not assume a universal path. Refer to the Riot cache and launch instructions.

Repair the affected game
- Open Riot Client and select Settings.
- Select the affected game.
- Choose the available Repair option.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then restart Windows and test.
Repair availability and menu names vary by game and client version. It primarily checks game files and installation integrity; it is not a guaranteed repair for the Riot Client shell itself.
Check antivirus, firewall and compatibility settings
Allow the actual Riot executables
After a patch, antivirus software can quarantine or block an executable. Prefer narrowly scoped exclusions or firewall allowances; never leave protection disabled. Riot lists these default paths, which can differ if you installed to another drive:

Use the files at your actual installation paths. If you briefly test with antivirus disabled, re-enable it immediately and avoid unnecessary network activity. Never download an unofficial “Riot fixer.” Riot’s troubleshooting article covers exclusions and compatibility checks.
Remove accidental compatibility settings
- Right-click each affected Riot executable or shortcut and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Clear Run this program in compatibility mode unless Riot Support specifically instructed otherwise.
- Also clear a manually forced Run this program as an administrator, apply the change and retest.
When Vanguard is actually relevant
Investigate Vanguard when the relaunch is accompanied by a VAN error, a “Vanguard is not running” message, a restart request, a Vanguard tray warning, or a game that reaches Riot Client but cannot enter the match. Vanguard’s driver can start with Windows by design so it establishes its security state before a game launches; that is different from Riot Client visibly opening. For VAN 9002
Riot’s January 14, 2026 guidance for VAN 9002 is to check Windows Exploit Protection and restore Riot-related custom application entries to their defaults or remove those entries, then restart. Do not apply this specialized fix to an unrelated startup symptom; use Riot’s VAN 9002 instructions.
Reinstall Vanguard before the whole game
- Exit every Riot process.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Riot Vanguard, if it is listed.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the Riot game so Vanguard can reinstall, then restart again if prompted.
- Test the client and game.
Removing a game does not necessarily remove Vanguard when another installed Riot title still depends on it. Riot documents removal and disabling in its Vanguard removal guide and notes the multiple-game exception in this additional guide.

Use a clean boot to find background conflicts
A clean boot is diagnostic, not a permanent setup. In Windows’ System Configuration tool, temporarily hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining non-Microsoft services and startup items, restart and test Riot Client. If it works, re-enable items in groups until the conflict returns, then restore normal startup.
Common conflicts include third-party antivirus, overlays, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, VPNs or proxies, screen recorders, motherboard tools, virtualization or security software, old anti-cheat components and network filters.
When Riot Client still will not behave
Do not jump to registry cleaners, broad Windows-security changes, BIOS changes or a Windows reinstall. If the client cannot open, use Task Manager, Startup apps and the rename-first cache procedure; if it cannot be uninstalled, an administrator may be required, especially on a work or school PC controlled by policy.
Contact Riot Support when the loop survives these steps. Include your Riot ID and region, affected game, Windows version, exact error code, time of occurrence, startup setting status, steps already attempted, screenshots and Riot logs. Riot directs users to support tickets and log collection when normal troubleshooting fails; start with its official troubleshooting guidance.
