Diablo 4 Memory Leak on Windows: How to Diagnose and Fix Crashes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some Windows players report Diablo IV becoming increasingly stuttery, using more memory over time, or crashing with an out-of-memory error. There is no verified universal fix or Blizzard-confirmed single cause. Start by checking whether system RAM, Windows committed memory, or GPU memory is running out; then restore Windows-managed paging-file sizing, verify the game files, and test the other low-risk steps below. A larger page file can help with Windows commit exhaustion, but it does not prove that a Diablo IV bug is fixed.

First identify which kind of memory is under pressure

“Memory” can mean several different things, and the right fix depends on which one is filling up:

  • RAM is physical system memory shared by Windows and running applications.
  • VRAM is the graphics card’s memory used for rendering, textures, and other assets.
  • Committed memory is the memory Windows has promised to applications, backed by RAM and the page file. Its limit depends on available backing capacity.
  • A memory leak is software continuing to allocate memory without releasing it. Rising usage alone does not prove that is happening; asset caching or streaming may also make usage rise temporarily.
  • Internal heap exhaustion occurs when a game’s own allocator fails. It can happen even when Windows appears to have RAM available, and a larger page file may not solve it.

Community reports describe both gradual growth and crashes during loading or teleporting, but those reports do not establish one cause for every player. For example, players have reported increasing memory use followed by crashes (Blizzard forum report) and a teleport-related internal heap exhaustion error (Blizzard forum report).

Watch RAM, Commit, and GPU memory in Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On Processes, watch Diablo IV’s Memory column and the overall memory percentage.
  3. Open Performance > Memory and note the Committed reading, shown as used memory against its limit.
  4. Open Performance > GPU and check dedicated GPU memory.
  5. Record readings, the time, and what you were doing immediately before a crash. After restarting the game, see whether usage starts lower and climbs again.

High RAM use by itself is not proof of a leak. If committed memory approaches its limit, the page file may be disabled, capped, unavailable, or unable to expand because its drive is nearly full. If dedicated GPU memory is full while system RAM is steady, investigate VRAM pressure instead. A crash immediately at launch is less likely to be solved by a page-file change than a crash after a long session.

Patterns worth noting

Players describe progressively worse stuttering, crashes after varying amounts of play, and failures during loading screens, town entry, or teleporting. Some report crashes even with 32 or 64 GB of RAM, or say reducing graphics settings did not eliminate them. Timing varies by system, driver, game build, settings, and background applications; symptoms help narrow the branch, but do not diagnose the cause on their own. See reports of stuttering and memory growth and older reports involving memory, textures, and file repair.

Try the safest fixes first

  1. Restart Windows. This clears the current session’s game and driver state and gives you a clean baseline.
  2. Close unnecessary applications. Exit browsers, recording tools, RGB utilities, and other programs you do not need while testing. Disable overlays temporarily, including those from Battle.net, Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, Xbox Game Bar, and monitoring tools.
  3. Run Battle.net Scan and Repair. In Battle.net, select Diablo IV, choose the gear icon beside Play, select Scan and Repair, then Begin Scan. Wait for it to finish, restart Battle.net, and test again. The launcher’s wording or layout may vary by version. File repair checks game files; it does not specifically diagnose a memory leak.
  4. Update Windows and the graphics driver from official sources. Blizzard recommends checking driver and operating-system updates when troubleshooting game problems (Blizzard support). Driver downloads are available from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. Restart after installing.
  5. Make sure Windows manages the page file automatically. Follow the steps below, then restart and run a controlled play session.

Restore Windows-managed page-file sizing

Windows can use the page file as backing for committed memory. Automatic management is the safest first setting: it avoids imposing an arbitrary cap, provided the drive has room. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance also uses automatic paging-file management and a restart (Microsoft support).

  1. Press Windows + R, enter sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Open Advanced. Under Performance, select Settings.
  3. In Performance Options, open Advanced. Under Virtual memory, select Change.
  4. Check Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  5. Select OK in each dialog and restart the PC.

Check that the drive hosting the page file has adequate free space. Do not disable the page file because the PC has plenty of RAM: disabling it can lower the available commit limit. If the system drive is nearly full, free space before testing rather than expecting Windows to expand into unavailable storage.

Consider a fixed page file only as a reversible test

Some players say a custom page file helped; community advice commonly cites 32,768 MB, but it is not a Blizzard-certified requirement or a universal setting. Treat it as a test for possible virtual-memory exhaustion, not a repair for a confirmed game leak. The same community discussions include disagreement about whether changing the page file fixes the issue or merely delays a crash (Blizzard forum discussion).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Return to System Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory > Change.
  2. Untick Automatically manage paging file size for all drives.
  3. Select a drive with sufficient free space, then choose Custom size.
  4. As a community-reported test value, enter Initial size: 32768 MB and Maximum size: 32768 MB.
  5. Select Set, then OK and Apply. Restart Windows.

A fixed page file reserves disk capacity and can fail if the drive lacks space. Avoid enormous sizes or creating large page files on multiple drives by default. If the problem does not improve, return to automatic management. A bigger page file may postpone an out-of-memory failure while the underlying issue continues; if it fills, the game may still crash or Windows may become unstable.

Reduce game memory pressure one setting at a time

If the page file is available and the crash persists, test one change per session so you can tell whether it matters:

Diablo IV
  • A Bleak Future Diablo IV - takes place many years after the events of Diablo III, after millions have been slaughtered by the actions of the High Heavens and Burning Hells alike. In the power vacuum, a legendary name resurfaces—Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, the whispered progenitor of humanity. Her grip on Sanctuary cuts deep into the hearts of men and women alike, cultivating the worst in its denizens and leaving the world a dark, hopeless place
  • An Open Sanctuary to Explore - With Diablo IV, we are cracking open the campaign approach to broaden Sanctuary in a way we've never explored. With a fully open world, players will be able to adventure across five distinctively dangerous regions in any order, all seamlessly connected for uninterrupted journeys
  • The Classes of Diablo IV - Players will be able to choose between five different, unique classes on launch
  • Disable High-Resolution Assets, if installed, and lower texture quality.
  • Reduce resolution or render scale; test with ray tracing off.
  • Test DLSS, FSR, or XeSS in the other state—on or off—where applicable.
  • Limit the frame rate and temporarily disable NVIDIA Reflex.
  • Try fullscreen, borderless, or windowed mode.
  • Keep overlays and monitoring tools disabled during the test.

These are diagnostic mitigations, not confirmed universal fixes. Reports differ: some players see no benefit from lower settings, while others report better stability after reducing texture or high-resolution options (player reports on Blizzard’s forum). If the game’s process keeps growing even at reduced settings, graphics changes may only delay a crash.

Use the symptom to choose the next branch

What happens What to investigate first Useful next steps
Memory rises gradually during a long session Game or asset behavior, launcher or overlay interaction, or commit pressure Compare RAM and Commit readings; check page-file settings; reduce textures; test without overlays.
Crash during teleporting or zone loading Asset loading or an internal heap failure Scan and Repair; test a driver update or rollback; reduce high-resolution assets.
Crash at launch Driver, damaged files, overlay, or incompatible configuration Check the driver; Scan and Repair; disable overlays; test a clean startup.
Dedicated GPU memory reaches its limit while RAM is stable VRAM pressure Lower textures, resolution, or ray tracing; test upscaling.
Windows shows a blue screen Possible driver, unstable memory settings, or hardware fault Disable overclocks; run Windows Memory Diagnostic; record the stop code.
Other demanding games or applications also crash System-wide driver or hardware instability Test memory, graphics drivers, and Windows system files.
Page file is disabled or tightly capped Possible commit exhaustion Restore automatic management and confirm the drive has free space.
Automatic paging, file repair, and driver testing change nothing Possibly not page-file exhaustion; a game, driver, or hardware issue remains possible Stop enlarging the page file and collect diagnostic details for Blizzard.

Check drivers, RAM stability, and Windows if crashes continue

Test a graphics-driver change carefully

Record your current driver version. If the latest official driver does not help—or the problem began immediately after an update—test a known-stable earlier driver from the GPU maker’s official archive, then restart and retest without overlays or tuning utilities. Community reports have linked crashes to particular driver periods, but do not establish a universally safe version. In particular, an older forum recommendation for NVIDIA driver 561.09 should not be applied automatically to newer GPUs or Windows builds (community discussion).

Remove overclocks and test system memory

Unstable CPU, GPU, or RAM settings can resemble a game memory problem. Temporarily disable CPU and GPU overclocks and turn off XMP or EXPO so the system runs at motherboard-default memory settings. To launch Windows Memory Diagnostic, press Windows + R, enter mdsched, and follow its restart prompt. Microsoft documents this diagnostic and related driver and memory troubleshooting (Microsoft support). If other applications also fail, or the test reports errors, investigate system stability rather than assuming Diablo IV is the only problem.

Repair Windows system files only for broader instability

If Windows itself has update failures, damaged components, or unexplained system instability, open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow

Microsoft recommends DISM followed by System File Checker for Windows system-file issues (Microsoft support). These commands do not repair Diablo IV’s code.

What not to do

  • Do not assume more RAM fixes it. A PC with 64 GB can still encounter VRAM, commit-limit, driver, hardware, or game-internal failures. Reports of crashes with ample RAM and during teleporting support checking beyond system RAM (Blizzard forum report).
  • Do not disable the page file as a memory-leak fix.
  • Do not create enormous page files by default. A very large allocation can consume storage without fixing the cause, and a longer time before a crash is not proof of resolution (community discussion).
  • Do not disable Windows security features as a first-line fix. Turning off Memory Integrity is not a Diablo IV memory-leak fix and can remove protections; Microsoft describes security consequences in its driver guidance (Microsoft support).
  • Skip RAM cleaners and registry cleaners. They are not a substitute for Windows memory management or diagnosing the game and may add instability or unwanted background activity.

When to report the problem to Blizzard

If Windows manages the page file, the drive has room, Scan and Repair completes, and controlled driver and settings tests do not help, stop increasing the page file and send Blizzard a report. Include details that let support distinguish a long-session memory rise from a loading failure or system fault:
