What the error means—and what it does not tell you
Official Sea of Thieves community guidance treats this message as a Lavenderbeard troubleshooting issue. The error alone does not establish whether Sea of Thieves services are down or whether the problem is a local sign-in session. A separate report describes a PC player seeing the message while a console player could log in, so one player’s error does not prove a game-wide outage.

There is no verified diagnostic test in the available guidance that identifies the cause for a specific player. Check service notices before troubleshooting your device.
Work through these steps in order
- Check for an outage or maintenance. Look at official Sea of Thieves and Xbox service or support notices. Current service status is not established here, so do not assume services are either available or down.
- Fully close Sea of Thieves and relaunch it. A Sea of Thieves community moderator recommends closing the game completely, rather than merely returning to the dashboard or leaving it suspended, and then starting it again. Read the moderator’s forum guidance.
- Restart the device if the message remains. Restart your PC or console, then launch the game again. This is the moderator’s next recommended step.
- If you recently changed your gamertag, sign out and back in. When no outage or maintenance is known, use the sign-out option on Sea of Thieves’ main menu, then sign back in. This is a reported, situation-specific fix; a forum post says restarting alone did not resolve that player’s issue. It is not a guaranteed remedy for every Lavenderbeard error. If you still cannot connect
Follow Rare’s official Lavenderbeard support article, which the community moderator links for further troubleshooting, and contact Sea of Thieves support if needed. The moderator’s post identifies the article as the next resource, but its current detailed contents are not available here; no additional steps from that guide are asserted in this article. The Xbox Series S report also documents the message, but does not establish a separate console-specific fix: read the forum report.
