How to Fix The Sims 4 Glitches: Stuck Sims, Mods, Saves, Crashes, and Lag

The right fix for a Sims 4 glitch depends on what is going wrong: one unresponsive Sim, a mod conflict, a save that will not load, a game crash or freeze, or slow performance. Start by identifying the symptom and whether you play on PC, Mac, PlayStation, or Xbox; EA’s troubleshooting steps differ by platform and problem.

Identify the glitch before changing anything

Use the symptom to choose a troubleshooting route. If the whole game stops responding or closes, use the crash and freeze steps below. If only one Sim will not act, reset that Sim. If the issue began after a game update or adding custom content, test without mods. If a particular save will not load, protect your user files before testing a clean game.

Open the cheat window

• PC or Mac: press Ctrl + Shift + C.
• PlayStation: hold all four shoulder buttons at once.
• Xbox: hold all four shoulder buttons at once.

Enter resetSim Firstname Lastname, replacing the example names with the stuck Sim’s first and last name, then confirm the command. To attempt to reset every Sim, enter resetSim *. EA warns that the all-Sims command may not reset everyone and can return a Sim-not-found error.

Check whether mods or custom content are causing the problem

Mods can stop working after a game update, and a symptom alone cannot prove that a mod is responsible. EA Help says, “If you’re having problems with your game, there’s no single way to determine if Mods are the cause.” Test methodically rather than deleting everything at once.

1. Move or disable your mods and custom content, then launch the game and try to reproduce the problem without them.
2. Check the creator’s page for confirmation that each item works with your current game version. EA’s mod and game-update guidance recommends checking compatibility.
3. If the game works without mods, add content back in batches, testing after each batch. When a batch brings the issue back, divide that batch and test again until you isolate the item.
4. When narrowing down a conflict, remove gameplay mods first. EA says these are more likely than custom content to cause issues.

Some error codes can point toward script-related trouble, but they are clues rather than proof of a particular culprit. EA associates codes 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 with script issues where a script mod could be involved; code 110 usually appears after an update and is caused by outdated mods.

Test a save or downloaded file without risking your files

Resetting the Sims 4 user folder changes files, including the location of saves and mods. Back up the folder before following EA’s reset procedure; do not treat a reset as a harmless first step.

1. Close the game and make a copy of your Sims 4 user folder in a safe location. Follow EA’s platform-specific file instructions so you back up the right folder.
2. Use EA’s reset procedure to create a clean game state without the previous saves and mods.
3. Launch the game and test the same action that caused the problem before restoring backed-up files.
4. Restore backed-up folders one at a time and test again after each restore. If the issue returns after restoring saves, test individual save files to find the one associated with it.

This process helps distinguish a problem with the game’s clean user state from one associated with a restored save or downloaded file; it does not establish that every file in the restored folder is safe or compatible. Follow EA’s backup and reset instructions for the applicable platform.

Fix Sims 4 crashes and freezes by platform

EA publishes different steps for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Start with the actions for the platform you use; do not assume a console procedure applies to a computer or vice versa.

1. Close background applications and check whether the game remains stable.
2. In the EA app, open Library > Manage > Repair for The Sims 4 to repair game files.

PlayStation

• Install available system updates and unplug USB devices while testing.

Improve performance on a lower-spec PC or Mac

If your computer is near or below the game’s minimum requirements, or you play on a laptop, EA recommends trying Laptop Mode. In the game, open Game Options > Game and enable Laptop Mode, then apply the change. This is a performance-oriented setting; it is not a guaranteed fix for crashes or a broken save.

EA’s system-requirements page also described Memory Boost as an opt-in, PC-only Early Access feature when that page was reviewed. Its availability or status may change, so check EA’s current page rather than assuming it is available to every player. The same page lists the game’s requirements.
