It is an outcome, not a diagnosis. The fault can be DNS, routing, firewall filtering, a proxy policy, missing port forwarding, or a destination service that is down or not listening. Test the connection from the same path that fails, then correct the layer that the evidence identifies.
What error 110 means
Error 110 is a generic operating-system timeout (often shown as ETIMEDOUT). A client, proxy, or application tried to establish a TCP session but did not receive the expected response within the configured wait period. In Squid, the related message ERR_CONNECT_FAIL indicates that Squid could not open a connection to the origin server.

A timeout does not prove that the remote computer is powered off. Packets can be silently dropped by a host firewall, an edge firewall, a security group, an upstream access-control list, a broken route, or a proxy rule. A service may also be running but listening only on a private interface or on a different port. Conversely, a connection reset (RST) or an orderly close (FIN) is different evidence from a connection that receives no response.
Start by documenting the failing connection
Write down the values below before changing settings. A timeout to one destination and port requires a different investigation from a timeout to every destination.

| Item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hostname | The exact name used by the application or browser | Different names can resolve to different addresses. |
| Resolved address | Each IPv4 or IPv6 address returned by DNS | The client may be contacting an unexpected or unreachable address. |
| Port and protocol | The TCP port and whether the request is HTTP, HTTPS, or another protocol | A firewall or listener can allow one port while dropping another. |
| Source path | Client, proxy, VPN, or other gateway that generated the request | The failing machine may not be the machine that needs fixing. |
| Direction | Internal network, external internet, or both | Internal success does not establish public reachability. |
| Time and result | When it failed, how long it waited, and whether it timed out or reset | Correlating tests with firewall, DNS, and route changes prevents guesswork. |
Use a layer-by-layer diagnostic sequence
Run each test from the path that reports the error. If a proxy displays the message, test from the proxy as well as from the destination server. A successful test from the server itself proves only that the service works locally; it does not prove that the client or proxy can reach it.
1. Confirm the DNS answer
Resolve the hostname with the DNS tools available on the affected machine, such as nslookup host.example or dig host.example. Compare the returned address with the address the service is supposed to expose. Check every answer if DNS returns more than one address.
- If the name does not resolve, correct the DNS record or the client’s DNS configuration before testing TCP.
- If it resolves to an old, private, or otherwise unexpected address, correct the record or the split-DNS view being used by that network.
- If internal users receive a private address while internet users should receive a public address, verify that the public DNS record points to the external-facing address.
Do not treat a successful name lookup as proof that the service is reachable. DNS supplies an address; it does not test the route, firewall policy, forwarding rule, or application listener.
2. Test the TCP port from the failing path
Use a TCP-capable probe against the recorded host and port. Netcat is concise:
nc -vz host.example PORT
From an environment that has curl, the telnet protocol handler tests the TCP handshake without sending an application request:

curl -v telnet://host.example:PORT
Replace PORT with the port used by the service. Interpret the result carefully:
- A completed connection means the path and listener accepted TCP at that moment. An application can still reject the protocol or fail later.
- A timeout means the probe did not complete the handshake. Investigate routing, filtering, forwarding, or a listener bound to the wrong interface.
- A refusal or reset means a host answered but rejected or closed the connection. Check whether the service is running, whether it is listening on that port, and whether a firewall is actively rejecting it.
Run the same probe from the client, from the proxy if one is involved, and from a machine on the destination network. Comparing these locations identifies where reachability changes.
3. Verify that the destination service is listening
On the destination system, check the service status and its listening sockets using the operating system’s service and socket tools. Confirm all three details separately:
- The expected service process is running.
- It is listening on the expected TCP port.
- It is bound to the interface that receives the traffic, not only to a loopback or private interface that the requester cannot reach.
An “open port” at the edge and a “service listening” on the host are independent requirements. Opening or forwarding a port cannot create a listener, and starting a listener cannot bypass an edge firewall.
4. Check edge firewall and port forwarding
For a service behind a router or firewall, inspect the rule for the exact protocol and port. Confirm that the rule is enabled, permits the source network that is failing, and forwards to the current internal address of the server. If the server’s internal address changed, a rule can still appear present while sending packets to the wrong machine.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Check both directions where the design requires return traffic. A request may reach the server while replies follow an asymmetric route or are filtered on the way back, which appears to the client as a timeout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Compare direct and proxied access
Attempt the same destination directly and through the configured proxy, keeping the hostname and port identical. If direct access succeeds but the proxy times out, focus on the proxy’s egress path rather than changing the origin application.
- Review proxy access-control lists and destination restrictions.
- Verify that the proxy has a route to the destination and that its egress firewall permits the port.
- Check whether the proxy resolves the hostname differently from the client.
- Confirm that the proxy is using the intended network interface and gateway.
Squid guidance describes this condition plainly: the timeout means Squid was unable to open the connection to the server. A working browser connection from another network does not disprove a proxy-specific route or policy problem.
6. Inspect routing and packet behavior
When DNS is correct and a listener exists, examine the route between the source and destination. Check local routes, the default gateway, VPN routes, cloud security-group rules, host firewalls, and upstream access-control lists. A missing route or silently dropped SYN packet commonly produces a timeout.
A packet capture taken at the relevant interface gives more precise evidence:

| Observed traffic | Likely direction for investigation |
|---|---|
| SYN leaves, but no SYN/ACK or RST returns | Routing failure, silent filtering, an unreachable host, or a listener that is not answering. |
| SYN/ACK returns, but the client never completes the handshake | Return-path routing, stateful filtering, or an intermediate device dropping replies. |
| RST arrives quickly | An active rejection, a closed port, or a firewall policy that rejects rather than drops. |
| FIN appears after a connection | The peer or an intermediary closed an established session; investigate service or policy behavior rather than treating it as a silent timeout. |
Squid troubleshooting guidance uses a SYN/ACK timeout as a practical hint of routing trouble, while FIN or RST behavior can point toward firewall or service handling. These are clues, not proofs; confirm them with a capture and a port test.
7. Separate transport failures from application warnings
Applications often log several messages at once. A PHP, PCRE, or configuration warning near a timeout may be unrelated to the TCP failure. First establish whether a raw TCP probe can complete. Only after transport works should you troubleshoot authentication, request syntax, certificates, application configuration, or code-level errors.
If the TCP probe succeeds but the application still fails, collect the application’s own status code and logs. Do not disable security controls or rewrite application settings merely because they appear beside error 110 in a combined log.
8. Retest after every change
Change one layer at a time, then repeat the same probe. Record the source address, destination address, port, direct or proxied path, command, and result. This creates a before-and-after trail and shows whether a DNS edit, firewall change, route correction, or service restart actually changed reachability.

Fixes for common patterns
Only one hostname or port times out
- Resolve the name and compare the address with the intended destination.
- Probe the exact port from the affected client or proxy.
- Verify that the service listens on that port and interface.
- Check the edge rule and forwarding target for that port.
Do not change the entire network configuration when the evidence isolates one destination. A single stale DNS record, stopped service, or incorrect forwarding target can explain the result.

- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Every external destination times out
Test more than one known destination and port from the same client. If all fail, inspect the client’s default route, gateway reachability, VPN or proxy configuration, and outbound firewall policy. If other clients on the same network also fail, examine the gateway, upstream route, or egress policy rather than the individual application.
The service works internally but not from the internet
Internal success confirms only the internal path. Verify that public DNS returns the external-facing address, that the edge firewall allows the port from the intended source networks, and that forwarding sends traffic to the correct internal host. Test from a genuinely external network; testing from inside the same network can be affected by NAT loopback behavior and does not substitute for an internet-path test.
Direct access works, but Squid or another proxy times out
Run the port probe on the proxy host. If it fails there, repair the proxy’s route or egress filtering. If it succeeds on the proxy but Squid still reports ERR_CONNECT_FAIL, inspect proxy access-control rules, proxy DNS resolution, and the destination policy applied to proxy source addresses. Keep direct and proxied tests separate in your notes so that a successful direct test is not mistaken for proof that the proxy path is healthy.
The timeout is intermittent
Repeat the probe while recording timestamps and resolved addresses. Intermittence can occur when DNS returns multiple addresses and only one is reachable, when a forwarding target changes, or when a stateful firewall or route intermittently drops handshakes. Compare captures and logs during a failure and a success rather than relying on a single successful retry.
What not to conclude from error 110
- It does not identify one universal cause.
- It does not prove that the remote host is powered off or permanently unavailable.
- It does not prove that DNS is correct merely because a name resolved.
- It does not prove that an internally reachable service is publicly reachable.
- It does not make nearby application warnings the root cause.
- It does not justify opening every firewall port or disabling filtering without a targeted test.
A compact decision table
| Evidence | Next check | Typical corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Name fails to resolve or resolves incorrectly | Authoritative and client DNS records | Correct the record or the DNS view used by the failing network. |
| Correct address, no handshake from client | Client route, gateway, and outbound filtering | Restore the route or permit the required egress traffic. |
| No handshake from proxy, but client path is irrelevant | Proxy route, ACL, and egress firewall | Correct proxy policy or its network path. |
| Internal probe succeeds, external probe times out | Public DNS, edge firewall, and forwarding | Point public DNS to the external address and forward the port to the listening host. |
| Destination host reachable, port refused | Service status and bind address | Start the service or configure it to listen on the intended interface and port. |
| RST or FIN instead of silence | Active firewall or application behavior | Review reject rules, service logs, and session policy. |
| TCP succeeds but application fails | Application protocol and logs | Resolve the application-layer issue separately from transport. |
When to involve the network or hosting administrator
Escalate with evidence rather than only the text of error 110. Provide the exact hostname, resolved address, port, timestamp, source network, whether the request was direct or proxied, the output of the TCP probe, and any packet-capture indication of SYN/ACK, RST, or FIN. Ask the administrator to verify the destination listener, edge rule, forwarding target, route symmetry, and filtering logs for that time.
If the destination is operated by another organization, send the same concise data to its support team. They can distinguish a service outage from a source-network block only when they know the attempted address, port, and source path.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- The hostname resolves to the intended address from the failing network.
- The route from the actual client or proxy reaches that address.
- The edge firewall permits the required protocol and port.
- Any port-forwarding rule targets the current internal address.
- The destination service is running, listening on the expected port, and bound to the reachable interface.
- A TCP probe succeeds from the same path that previously timed out.
- Only then are application-level errors investigated.
