Traefik reports “the certificate resolver does not exist” when a router names a resolver that Traefik did not load successfully. The usual causes are a spelling or case mismatch, defining the resolver in dynamic rather than static configuration, an incomplete ACME block, an unusable acme.json path or file, or configuration syntax that no longer matches the Traefik version. Fix the declaration first, then verify initialization in the startup logs before testing HTTPS.

What the error actually means
A Traefik router does not create a certificate resolver merely by referring to one. The resolver must be declared in Traefik’s static configuration, initialized successfully during startup, and then selected by the router with the exact declared key. Traefik Labs’ certificate-resolver documentation makes this distinction explicit: “Defining a certificate resolver does not imply that routers are going to use it automatically.”

For example, a static configuration can declare a resolver under the key le:
certificatesResolvers:
le:
acme:
email: [email protected]
storage: /data/acme.json
httpChallenge:
entryPoint: web
A router must then select le, not a descriptive variation such as letsencrypt or cloudflare:

- traefik.http.routers.app.tls=true
- traefik.http.routers.app.tls.certresolver=le
If the declaration is malformed, the storage cannot be opened, or the ACME settings fail validation, Traefik may never register the resolver. The router can consequently report that the resolver does not exist even though a similarly named block appears somewhere in your files.
First check: make the resolver names identical
Read the resolver key and the router label side by side. The key immediately below certificatesResolvers is the name routers must use. Resolver names are case-sensitive.
| Static declaration | Valid router reference | Why other references fail |
|---|---|---|
certificatesResolvers.le |
tls.certresolver=le |
letsencrypt, LE, and cloudflare are different names |
Do not infer the name from the challenge type, email address, DNS provider, or a label used in another project. Only the declared key matters. A common failure is defining le in YAML and copying a router example that uses letsencrypt. Change one side so both strings match exactly, including capitalization.
After changing a static file, restart or otherwise reload Traefik according to your deployment method. A router label change alone does not make a resolver declaration appear if Traefik started without the static block.
Put the resolver in static configuration
Traefik separates startup (static) configuration from provider (dynamic) configuration. Certificate resolvers belong to the static configuration. Router labels, HTTP routers, services, and middleware belong to dynamic provider configuration.
What belongs in static configuration
- The
certificatesResolverstree. - The ACME account email and storage location.
- The selected challenge type and its entry point or DNS settings.
- Equivalent settings supplied through Traefik command-line flags or environment substitutions.
What belongs in dynamic configuration
- Router rules and entry points.
- The
tlssetting and the router’scertresolverreference. - Provider objects loaded from Docker labels, a file provider, or another dynamic source.
A resolver block placed only in a file provider’s dynamic configuration is not a static certificate resolver. The file may be mounted correctly and still have no effect on resolver initialization. Move the block into the static YAML or TOML file, or express the equivalent settings with the command-line options used to start Traefik.

When both static and dynamic files exist, verify which file Traefik actually receives at startup. A correctly edited file that is not mounted, is mounted at a different path, or is not named by the startup command cannot change the running configuration.
Use a complete ACME resolver block
An ACME resolver needs more than a name. The following YAML shape contains the required pieces shown in the Traefik configuration guidance:
certificatesResolvers:
le:
acme:
email: [email protected]
storage: /data/acme.json
httpChallenge:
entryPoint: web
The router then opts into TLS and selects the same key:
- traefik.http.routers.app.tls=true
- traefik.http.routers.app.tls.certresolver=le
Adapt the challenge portion to your deployment. HTTP, TLS, and DNS challenges have different network and DNS prerequisites; copying an HTTP challenge into a host that cannot receive the required traffic will prevent certificate issuance even when the resolver name is correct.
HTTP challenge
An HTTP challenge requires the configured entry point, commonly called web, to be reachable for the validation request. Your deployment must expose and route the challenge traffic to Traefik. If port 80 cannot reach that entry point, initialization or issuance will fail for a different reason than a name mismatch.
TLS challenge
A TLS challenge requires Traefik to accept the validation connection on the TLS entry point, normally port 443. Network forwarding, entry-point naming, and any upstream load balancer must allow that traffic to reach the Traefik instance.

DNS challenge
A DNS challenge requires Traefik to update the authoritative DNS zone through a supported provider and to use the option names expected by the installed Traefik version. It does not remove the need for a correctly named static resolver or writable ACME storage.
Verify the storage path inside the Traefik container
The storage value is interpreted from Traefik’s point of view. A host path that exists on the Docker host is not enough if the same path does not exist inside the container. The parent directory must exist before Traefik starts. Traefik can create the ACME file itself, but it cannot create a missing parent directory in every deployment arrangement.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the path and mount
- Read the path in the static resolver block, such as
/data/acme.json. - Confirm that
/dataexists inside the Traefik container or process environment before startup. - Confirm that the container volume or bind mount maps persistent storage to that exact path.
- Restart Traefik and inspect startup output for storage or ACME initialization errors.
Use an absolute path visible in the container, not a path that exists only on the host. Persist the directory with a bind mount or named volume so an otherwise successful certificate and account state is not lost when the container is recreated.
Why a missing file is different from a missing directory
Traefik can create the storage file when the parent directory is available and writable. A missing directory, however, prevents creation. This distinction explains why creating an empty file in an arbitrary host directory often does not fix the error: Traefik may still be looking at another path inside the container.
Check permissions and the contents of acme.json
Traefik must be able to read and write the storage file. Check the user running Traefik, the ownership of the mounted directory, and the permissions on an existing file. A read-only mount or a directory writable only by a different user can stop resolver initialization.
An existing acme.json can also be invalid. Malformed ACME data or a file that Traefik cannot access may surface at the router as a non-existent resolver because the resolver was not registered after initialization failed. Fix the underlying storage error rather than repeatedly changing the router label.

Safe recovery sequence
- Stop or otherwise quiesce Traefik before changing the storage file.
- Back up a known-good
acme.jsonand any related account data. - Check that the configured path is the mounted path inside the container.
- Correct ownership and write permissions for the Traefik process.
- Validate that the file is usable, then start Traefik and inspect initialization logs.
- Recreate the file only if it is malformed and you accept losing the certificates and ACME account data stored there.
Deleting the file is not a harmless reset. It can discard existing certificates and account state and may cause new issuance attempts. Preserve a backup before taking that step.
Inspect the configuration Traefik really loaded
When the names and ACME block look correct, investigate the effective startup configuration rather than the source files alone. The most useful checks are:
- Which static configuration file path is passed to Traefik?
- Is that file actually mounted into the container at that path?
- Do command-line flags override, replace, or point away from the file settings?
- Are environment-variable substitutions producing the values you expect?
- Is the storage volume mounted at the path used by the resolver?
- Did the container restart after the static configuration changed?
Enable log.level=DEBUG in the static configuration or the equivalent startup setting. Restart Traefik, then read the startup logs before sending a request. Look for messages about parsing, ACME account loading, storage access, challenge configuration, and resolver registration. A router warning that appears later is often only the consequence; the first startup error usually identifies the cause.
Keep the startup log from the same container instance you are testing. In orchestrated deployments, it is easy to inspect an old task or a different replica whose mounted files differ from the one receiving the request.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck version-specific ACME syntax
Traefik’s migration notes record that DNS-challenge options were reorganized in version 3.3. If a configuration written for the v2 series is running on v3.3 or newer, compare every DNS-challenge option with the syntax documented for the installed version. Deprecated or moved option names can prevent the resolver from initializing, which then appears to the router as a missing resolver.
Version troubleshooting steps
- Identify the exact Traefik version running in the container, not merely the version used when the configuration was written.
- Determine whether the resolver uses a DNS challenge.
- Review the v3.3 migration guidance for reorganized DNS-challenge options.
- Update the static configuration to the current names and restart Traefik.
- Read the debug startup log for parsing and provider errors before testing the router.
Do not assume that a configuration copied from a v2 example is valid unchanged on a newer release. Version syntax is separate from the resolver-name problem, but either issue can leave no usable resolver available to the router.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Use this end-to-end repair procedure
Follow these steps in order so that a later test does not hide an earlier failure:
- Record the router’s reference. Copy the value after
tls.certresolver=exactly. - Find the static key. Locate the key directly below
certificatesResolversand make the two strings identical, including case. - Move misplaced settings. Ensure the resolver and ACME block are in static YAML, TOML, or CLI configuration, not only in a dynamic file provider.
- Complete the ACME block. Supply the account email, storage path, and a challenge configuration appropriate for the deployment.
- Check the challenge prerequisites. Confirm reachability for HTTP on the configured entry point, TLS validation on the TLS entry point, or authoritative DNS updates for a DNS challenge.
- Verify storage visibility. Make sure the parent directory exists inside the container and that the configured path is backed by a persistent mount.
- Verify access and data. Give Traefik read/write access and repair or restore an invalid
acme.jsonfrom a backup. - Confirm the effective startup configuration. Check mounted files, command-line flags, environment substitutions, and restart state.
- Enable debug logging and restart. Read the first ACME and configuration errors in the startup log.
- Retest only after initialization succeeds. A successful resolver startup should precede any router or certificate request test.
Common scenarios and the correct fix
The label says letsencrypt, but the YAML key is le
Change the router reference to le, or rename the static key to letsencrypt. Do not change the challenge settings until the names match.
The resolver appears only in a dynamic file
Move the certificatesResolvers block to static configuration. Keep the router object and its tls.certresolver selection in the dynamic provider configuration.
The static block is correct, but the directory is absent
Create the parent directory in the mounted storage before starting Traefik. Keep the storage path unchanged and allow Traefik to create the file.
The file exists but Traefik cannot write it
Correct the mount mode, ownership, and permissions for the Traefik process. A file that can be read but not updated is not reliable ACME storage.
The file was copied from another deployment and is malformed
Restore a known-good backup. If none exists, recreate it only after accepting that stored certificates and account data will be lost.

Choosing a challenge method without creating a new failure
The resolver name error does not identify a universally best challenge. Choose according to what the deployment can reliably provide:
| Challenge | Deployment requirement | Typical blocking condition |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP | Reachable HTTP traffic on the configured entry point, normally port 80 | Port 80, forwarding, or the entry point is unavailable |
| TLS | Validation traffic can reach Traefik on the TLS entry point, normally port 443 | Port 443, load-balancer forwarding, or TLS entry-point mapping is incorrect |
| DNS | Traefik can update the authoritative DNS zone through a supported provider | Provider credentials, authority, propagation, or version-specific option names are wrong |
Whichever method you choose, keep its configuration under the same statically declared resolver key that the router references. A valid challenge method cannot compensate for a misspelled name, a dynamic-only declaration, or inaccessible storage.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not invent a resolver name in the router because it sounds more descriptive.
- Do not define the resolver only beside dynamic router objects and expect Traefik to treat it as static.
- Do not point
storageat a host path that is absent inside the container. - Do not delete
acme.jsonbefore making a backup and considering the loss of account and certificate data. - Do not test only the router warning while ignoring the earlier startup error that prevented resolver registration.
- Do not carry v2 DNS-challenge option names into v3.3 or newer without checking the migration changes.
Final verification checklist
- The router’s
tls.certresolvervalue exactly matches the key undercertificatesResolvers. - The resolver is in static YAML, TOML, or CLI configuration.
- The ACME block includes an email, an absolute storage path, and a suitable challenge.
- The challenge’s HTTP, TLS, or DNS prerequisites are available in the deployment.
- The storage parent directory exists inside the Traefik container.
- The mounted storage is persistent and writable by Traefik.
- Any existing
acme.jsonis accessible and valid, with a backup retained before destructive recovery. - The running container loaded the intended files, flags, mounts, and environment values.
- Debug startup logs show successful resolver initialization without parsing or storage errors.
- The configuration uses the syntax required by the installed Traefik version, including v3.3 DNS-challenge changes where applicable.
