The safest fix for Valheim’s Missing World DB message is to restore the world’s complete save from a matching backup. Legacy worlds need the same-named .db and .fwl files; newer worlds are folders containing multiple chunk files. Stop the game or server, copy the entire save before editing, restore the correct format, and keep the backup until the recovered world has been opened and checked.

What the Missing World DB message means
In Valheim’s legacy save format, each world is represented by two files with the same base name:

<World>.dbcontains the world data, including terrain and constructions.<World>.fwlcontains metadata that identifies the world.
A Missing DB entry normally means Valheim can see the metadata file but cannot find the matching database. The database may have been deleted, moved, renamed, or separated from its .fwl partner. The base names must match exactly. For example, Meadows.db belongs with Meadows.fwl, not with Meadows-old.fwl. Combining an unrelated pair can make the world appear empty or create what looks like a new world.
Iron Gate’s newer save system changed this structure. A world is stored in a folder, its database is split into multiple chunk files, and backups are kept in separate folders. A single file that resembles a database is therefore not a complete replacement for the newer format.

Protect the save before trying a repair
Do not rename, delete, convert, or overwrite anything until an untouched copy exists. A failed conversion or an automatic save can remove the only usable version of a world.
- Close Valheim completely.
- Stop any dedicated server that is using the affected world.
- Copy the entire save directory, including folders, world files, old files, and dated backups, to an external hard drive for game backups or another independent location.
- Work on a duplicate of that copy. Keep the original read-only if possible.
Iron Gate’s save-system announcement specifically advises backing up save files before using the Public Test and explains that worlds can be stored in separate folders, with the database divided into chunks and backups in separate folders. That makes a complete directory copy more reliable than copying one visible file.

Identify which save format you have
Legacy two-file format
Look for a world name followed by both .db and .fwl. Older copies may also contain .db.old and .fwl.old, or pairs with dates in their names. The important clue is a matching base name on both files.

Folder and chunk format
A newer save appears as a world folder rather than a complete world represented by only two files. Inside are multiple chunk files, while backup generations are stored in separate folders. Preserve the folder hierarchy when copying or restoring it.
Local and cloud copies
Check every save location exposed by Valheim’s save-management interface, including local and cloud entries where your installation provides both. A missing database in one location does not prove that every copy is gone. Do not assume that a cloud entry and a local entry are interchangeable: identify the format and restore one complete generation at a time.
Restore a legacy world manually
Use this procedure when the affected world is represented by matching .db and .fwl files.

- Stop all access. Exit Valheim and stop the dedicated server, if applicable. A running process can write over the files while you are replacing them.
- Make the safety copy. Copy the full save directory to an independent location, then make a working copy for the repair.
- Find every generation. In the local worlds folder, locate the world name and look for the current pair,
.db.old,.fwl.old, and dated backup pairs. Treat a database and metadata file as a unit. - Choose one matching generation. Restore the
.dband.fwlfrom the same backup generation. Keep the original world name and base name unchanged. - Replace both files together. If the current
.dbis missing but an older pair exists, copy both files from that pair into the working save location. Do not copy only the database and leave an unrelated metadata file in place. - Start Valheim and inspect the world. Confirm that the expected terrain, buildings, portals, storage, and character progress are present before touching any backup.
- Retain the recovery source. Keep the untouched original and the restored pair until you have played far enough to establish that saves continue normally.
If no matching .db exists anywhere, the .fwl file alone does not contain the missing world database. The practical recovery choices are another intact backup, a cloud copy, or an in-game save restoration point.
Use Manage Saves before manual replacement when available
Valheim’s Manage Saves tools are intended for corrupt, load-error, and missing-meta cases. Open the save-management screen, select the affected world, and inspect its listed backup generations. Restore a generation that predates the failure, then launch the world and verify its contents.
Official patch notes state that a backup can be restored repeatedly after the relevant fixes. That means you can try an older generation, check the result, and return to another preserved generation without consuming the only copy. Still, keep an external copy: an in-game restore changes the active save and is not a substitute for an independent backup.

The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Recover a world in the newer folder and chunk format
Do not treat this format like a legacy pair. The complete world directory is the unit you must preserve.
- Stop Valheim or the server and copy the entire world folder, including every chunk and the associated backup folders.
- Keep the conversion backup separate from the active copy. Do not delete it merely because the converted world appears in the list.
- Restore a complete folder from the same backup generation. Copying one chunk, or mixing chunks from different dates, can leave the world incomplete or inconsistent.
- Open the restored world in Valheim and inspect several areas, not just the spawn point. Check terrain, major bases, stored items, and any region where the failure occurred.
- Only after that inspection should you decide whether the converted copy can replace the old one. Preserve the pre-conversion directory in case a later problem appears.
Iron Gate describes the change this way: “Instead of saving a world with the .db and .fwl files it’s now stored in folders and the world (.db) is split up into multiple files (chunks).” That is why copying only a file with a database-like name is insufficient.
Fix a dedicated server that creates a new world
A server log containing missing …/<World>.db often means the server did not find the uploaded world under the configured name. When that happens, it may initialize a fresh world instead of loading the intended one.

- Stop the server. Do not let it continue saving the newly generated world over the upload.
- Check the configured world name. It must match the uploaded folder name for the newer format, or the legacy file base name for a
.db/.fwlworld, including capitalization and punctuation. - Check the save path. Confirm that the files were uploaded into the directory the server actually reads, rather than a similarly named folder.
- Upload the correct unit. For a legacy world, upload the matching
.dband.fwlpair. For a folder-format world, upload the complete world directory and its chunk files. - Start the server and read the log. A successful load includes a line in the form
ZNet.LoadWorld: <World> (<World>), save number <n>. The two displayed world names should correspond to the world you intended to load. - Join and inspect before deleting anything. Verify terrain and builds in-game, then retain the original upload and any server backup.
If the server still reports a missing database, stop it again and compare the configured name character by character with the actual folder or file base name. A correctly uploaded save in the wrong path is indistinguishable from a missing save to the server.
What to do if the world loads but content is missing
Items or armour-stand levels and variants
Patch 1.0.15 documents a problem in an early 1.0 conversion that could remove levels and variants from items and armour stands. The documented fix was included in 1.0.12. If your converted world shows this symptom, the official workarounds are to revert to the conversion backup, which sacrifices progress made afterward, or to copy that backup as a separate world and transfer the affected items through the character inventory. Make the separate-world copy before attempting either option.
Objects erased from a region
Patch 1.0.17 fixed a rare bug that could erase all objects in parts of a world when one large world-save chunk was split into smaller files. The patch prevents the failure; it does not state that objects already erased can be reconstructed. If the loss occurred before the fix, the recovery route is a backup from before the loss.
Choose the recovery route that fits your save
| Situation | What must be restored | Safer first action | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legacy local world | Matching .db and .fwl from one generation |
Use Manage Saves or restore a matching pair on a working copy | An older pair may lose progress after that backup |
| Newer folder-format world | Complete world folder, all chunks, and its backup folders | Copy and restore the complete directory | A partial copy can leave missing or inconsistent regions |
| Cloud or local entry | One complete generation in the selected location | Compare available entries before replacing files | Restoring one location does not automatically repair another |
| Dedicated-server migration | Correct save unit plus exact configured world name and path | Stop the server, correct the path/name, then upload the complete save | A mismatch can silently generate a new world |
| World loads with missing objects | Backup from before the conversion or deletion event | Test the pre-loss backup as a separate world | Later progress may be lost when using the older backup |
Common mistakes that make recovery worse
- Copying only the visible database: a legacy database without its matching metadata, or a single chunk without the rest of a folder-format world, is incomplete.
- Mixing backup dates: a newer
.dbwith an older.fwl, or chunks from different generations, can produce an empty-looking or damaged world. - Deleting the conversion backup: the converted world may open while still containing data loss that is only obvious after inspection.
- Leaving the server running: it can save a newly generated world over the directory you are trying to recover.
- Changing the world name casually: the server and legacy files depend on an exact base name; renaming only one part breaks the association.
- Checking only the spawn area: chunk-related loss can affect a distant region, so inspect important bases and storage areas before declaring success.
Verification checklist after a restore
- The world appears under the expected name rather than as a new entry.
- Terrain and major structures are present in several regions.
- Portals, containers, workstations, item stands, and stored equipment are intact.
- The character can enter and leave the world without a new load error.
- A fresh save completes normally.
- The dedicated-server log, when applicable, contains the expected
ZNet.LoadWorldline and save number. - The original save and conversion backup remain preserved until repeated launches confirm stability.
When there is no usable backup
A missing legacy database cannot be rebuilt from the metadata file alone, and the newer format cannot be reconstructed from one surviving chunk. Search every local, cloud, server, dated, and conversion backup exposed by your installation before making further changes. If none contains a complete matching pair or complete world directory, avoid repeatedly launching the damaged save: each new save can overwrite evidence that might still be recoverable from another copy.
