The Windows MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen is stop code 0x0000001A. It means Windows encountered a severe memory-management error, but it does not prove that a particular RAM module has failed. A defective device, faulty or incompatible driver, damaged Windows files, storage corruption, or another software change can produce the same symptom. Start by recording the exact stop-code details, then work through updates and recent changes, Windows Memory Diagnostic, System File Checker, event logs, device checks, and Safe Mode or dump collection if the crashes continue.
What the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen means
Microsoft defines bug check 0x0000001A as MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and describes it as a severe memory-management error. The label identifies a class of failures inside Windows; it is not a diagnosis of one physical RAM stick. An unexpected restart can be caused by a hardware device, its driver, or software.

That distinction matters because replacing memory immediately can waste money and leave the real cause untouched. The useful question is not simply “Is my RAM bad?” but “Which test, timing pattern, or log entry best separates bad memory from a driver, system-file, storage, or recent-change problem?”

- The exact text, especially
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. - The hexadecimal value, such as
0x0000001A, if it appears. - The progress percentage or stage shown on the blue screen.
- Any filename, module, or driver name displayed with the stop code.
- What the computer was doing: starting Windows, launching a game, waking from sleep, transferring files, or running a heavy workload.
- Whether the first crash followed a Windows update, driver installation, utility, peripheral, firmware change, or hardware upgrade.
The stop code and any available module name give later troubleshooting a starting point. Timing and reproducibility are equally valuable: a crash that began immediately after a graphics-driver update points in a different direction from a crash that occurs randomly across every application.
Use this order of operations
Perform the checks in sequence. After each meaningful change, use the computer long enough to determine whether the same blue screen returns. If Windows will not remain running, skip to the Safe Mode section.
1. Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available quality or cumulative updates, and restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and confirm that no additional restart is required.
Updates can correct operating-system defects and deliver compatible components. They are not proof that the original problem was software, so continue with memory and log checks even if the computer appears stable for a while.
2. Review changes made just before the crashes
Make a short list of anything changed shortly before the first MEMORY_MANAGEMENT stop: a device driver, graphics or security utility, peripheral, memory upgrade, storage change, firmware update, or newly installed application.
- If the change has a newer release, install the current compatible version from the computer or component manufacturer.
- If the crashes began immediately after the change, roll back the driver or uninstall the utility temporarily, then restart.
- Disconnect a newly added peripheral long enough to test whether the system remains stable.
- For a hardware upgrade, verify that the part is compatible with the computer’s model, firmware, memory generation, capacity limits, and configuration.
Do not change several unrelated drivers at once. One change at a time preserves the timing evidence that helps identify the cause.

3. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic
Windows includes a built-in physical-memory test. Save open work first because the test restarts the computer.
- Press Windows key + R, type
mdsched.exe, and press Enter. - Choose Restart now and check for problems if you can close your work, or choose the option to check the next time the computer restarts.
- Allow the test to complete. Interrupting the restart can leave the result unavailable.
- After Windows starts, open Event Viewer.
- Go to Windows Logs > System, then find the
MemoryDiagnostics-Resultsentry.
Read the result rather than relying on the blue-screen symptom alone. Reported errors make physical memory, its seating, or memory compatibility a leading suspect. A clean result does not prove that every component is perfect, but it makes a defective RAM module less supported by the available evidence and increases the importance of drivers, files, storage, and recent changes.
If errors are reported after a memory upgrade, power the computer off and check the manufacturer’s installation and compatibility guidance before buying replacement modules. Test one change at a time and keep a record of which configuration produced which result. Microsoft does not prescribe a universal replacement module for this stop code.
4. Repair missing or corrupted Windows files with System File Checker
Use System File Checker when Windows files may be missing or corrupted. The command must run from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
- Follow the result shown by System File Checker, restart Windows, and test again.
System File Checker is aimed at Windows-file damage; it cannot repair physically defective RAM or an incompatible device driver. If the scan reports that it could not complete, note the exact message and continue with Event Viewer, Safe Mode, and manufacturer diagnostics rather than repeatedly running the same command without new evidence.

5. Examine Event Viewer at the crash time
Event Viewer can show whether the stop occurred alongside a driver, service, storage, or hardware-related event.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Check Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application.
- Use the crash time from your photograph or notes to locate errors and critical events immediately before the restart.
- Record the event source, event ID, affected file or device, and the full message.
Give more weight to entries that repeat immediately before each crash than to one unrelated warning from hours earlier. An event that names a driver or device is a lead to verify, not automatic proof of fault.
6. Inspect devices and drivers
Open Device Manager and look for warning icons or devices that have appeared since the crashes began. Expand categories relevant to the timing, such as display adapters, storage controllers, network adapters, audio, Bluetooth, USB, and other recently changed hardware.
- Check the device’s properties for its status and driver details.
- Install a compatible driver from the computer or component manufacturer when an update is indicated.
- Use the driver’s rollback option when the problem started immediately after an update and a prior driver is available.
- Temporarily disconnect or remove a nonessential device if its timing matches the crashes.
Do not install a random driver merely because its date is newer. Compatibility with the exact Windows edition and hardware model is more important than the date shown in Device Manager.
7. Check storage and file-system integrity when logs point there
Microsoft’s stop-code guidance includes checking disk and file-system integrity when the evidence indicates a storage problem. Review Event Viewer for storage-related errors, examine the health and connection of recently changed drives, and use the file-system checking tools provided by Windows according to the message you find.

A storage check is especially relevant when the blue screen accompanies corrupted files, failed updates, missing applications, unusual disk noises, or repeated storage-controller events. It is not a substitute for the memory test: a clean disk result does not clear a driver or RAM problem, and a memory error does not establish that the disk is defective.
How to tell RAM, a driver, and software causes apart
| Evidence to compare | What it supports | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Memory Diagnostic reports errors | Physical memory, seating, or memory compatibility becomes the leading suspect. | Power off, verify installation and compatibility, and test configurations methodically before replacing parts. |
| Crashes began immediately after a driver, utility, peripheral, or hardware change | The recent change is a plausible trigger. | Update, roll back, or temporarily remove that change and retest. |
| A named module or driver appears on the blue screen or in logs | The named component is a focused lead, not conclusive proof. | Check its manufacturer-supported version, device status, and recent update history. |
| System File Checker reports damaged files | Missing or corrupted Windows files may be contributing. | Allow the scan to finish, restart, and verify whether the crash returns. |
| Crashes occur only with one application | An application, its plug-in, or its interaction with a driver is more plausible than a system-wide failure. | Update or remove the application and compare behavior in other workloads. |
| Crashes occur across startup, games, browsers, and idle use | A system-wide hardware, driver, Windows-file, or firmware issue is more plausible. | Prioritize memory testing, updates or rollback, logs, Safe Mode, and manufacturer diagnostics. |
| Crashes follow one repeatable workload | The workload is exposing a particular device, driver, temperature, or memory condition. | Record the exact steps that reproduce it and test the component most involved in that workload. |
Use all four comparison questions together: What does the test show? When did the problem begin? Can you reproduce it? Is the impact limited to one application or the whole system? No single clue is as useful as a consistent pattern across those questions.

Start with Safe Mode or Startup Settings
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the MEMORY_MANAGEMENT crash stops in Safe Mode, a normally loaded driver, utility, or startup component becomes more likely; if it continues, hardware or core Windows components remain serious possibilities.
- From the sign-in screen or Start menu, hold Shift while selecting Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen.
- In Safe Mode, remove or roll back the most recent suspect driver or utility, review logs, and prepare the memory test.
If you cannot reach the recovery menus normally, Windows may enter its recovery environment after repeated failed starts. Use the manufacturer’s recovery instructions when the built-in options are unavailable.

Collect a memory dump for deeper analysis
A memory dump preserves information about the failed kernel session. In System Properties, open Advanced system settings, select Startup and Recovery, and review the debugging-information and dump-file settings. Keep the dump location and the crash time in your notes. A technician or a support engineer can use the dump together with the stop-code details and event logs to investigate a driver or kernel component.

Dump analysis is most useful when crashes repeat and the basic checks have not isolated a cause. Preserve the original dump before changing settings or deleting temporary files.
When replacement RAM is justified
Consider replacing memory only after Windows Memory Diagnostic or another manufacturer-supported diagnostic produces errors, or after controlled testing identifies a specific module or incompatible configuration. Match the replacement to the computer’s supported memory type, speed, capacity, slot arrangement, and firmware requirements. A different kit is not a universal cure for 0x0000001A.
If the diagnostic is clean, do not treat a memory purchase as the next automatic step. Revisit the driver timeline, Event Viewer, System File Checker result, storage evidence, and whether a particular workload or application reproduces the crash.
