For Windows PC, start by identifying whether The Witcher 3 crashes after starting, will not launch, stutters, or stops at REDlauncher; the fixes differ. Check your storefront’s game-file verification option first for crashes or launch problems, then follow the matching steps below. On Steam Deck, CD PROJEKT RED specifically recommends launching with DirectX 11. These PC instructions do not establish a troubleshooting procedure for console editions.
Before troubleshooting, pin down the symptom
Write down your platform, storefront, game version, and where the failure happens: before REDlauncher opens, when you select Play, or after the game has started. Note whether you use mods, trainers, console commands, overlays, or custom launch parameters. These details matter because a REDlauncher failure is different from the game crashing after launch.
CD PROJEKT RED’s support form asks for device, storefront, version, DirectX mode, and mod, trainer, or command use. The form currently lists Windows PC and Steam Deck, Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and disc versions, and version choices 5.0 (Latest), 4.04, and 1.32; form options can change. Check the support form for the current choices.
If The Witcher 3 crashes or closes unexpectedly
CD PROJEKT RED’s crash checklist starts with system requirements, background applications, and installation files. Work through these checks before moving on to drivers:

- Check the applicable PC requirements. Confirm your system meets the requirements for the game version and features you are running.
- Close nonessential applications. CD PROJEKT RED specifically includes antivirus and antimalware software among applications to check. Temporarily close nonessential software for troubleshooting, then restore your normal protections.
- Check that the PC is malware-free.
- Verify the installed game files using the storefront steps below. Let the scan or repair finish.
If the crash continues, CD PROJEKT RED recommends a clean graphics-driver installation, removing the previous driver first. Use the driver page for your GPU vendor and model—not an unrelated download source. The support article also notes that an older driver can sometimes help. If the problem began after a driver update, testing a rollback may be more useful than assuming the newest driver is always best. These are recommended checks, not guaranteed fixes. If the game will not launch on Windows PC
Use the launch-specific checklist from CD PROJEKT RED. Verify your requirements and game files, and work through the following additional steps:
- Clean-install the graphics driver. Remove the previous driver as part of the clean installation and use the correct GPU vendor’s driver page.
- Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables. Follow the packages linked from CD PROJEKT RED’s launch support article. Install from the oldest package onward and skip ARM packages.
- Close unnecessary applications and overlays. The support article names GeForce Experience, RivaTuner, MSI Afterburner, MSI Gaming app, and Fraps as examples.
- Try a Windows clean boot. This helps check whether another application or service is interfering.
If the game still will not launch, contact CD PROJEKT RED Support and include any error message or code shown. Avoid broad system changes that are not part of the documented steps.

If REDlauncher itself will not open
These steps are specifically for a REDlauncher problem, not a crash that occurs after the game has started. Close REDlauncher, then:

- Delete the REDlauncher folder at
%localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Red. - Check that no custom launch parameters are set, then try again.
If REDlauncher still fails, submit a support ticket to CD PROJEKT RED.
If you are playing on Steam Deck
CD PROJEKT RED recommends DirectX 11 for The Witcher 3 on Steam Deck. Its support article says REDlauncher defaults to DirectX 12, so change the launch choice to DirectX 11 when starting the game. This is a Steam Deck-specific recommendation; the source does not say every Windows PC should use DirectX 11. Read the Steam Deck launch guidance.

If performance is choppy, frame rates are low, or loading takes too long
CD PROJEKT RED’s performance guidance covers low frame rates, choppy or slow performance, and long load times. Its recommended sequence is:
- Clean-install the graphics driver.
- Verify the game files through your storefront.
- Disable overlays or close overlay applications. The support article gives Discord, Ubisoft Connect, and Galaxy as examples.
- Close unnecessary programs, including hardware-monitoring and antivirus or antimalware software, while troubleshooting.
Then compare your settings and the conditions where the problem occurs. Output resolution matters: a higher resolution requires the system to process more pixels, while scaling renders at a lower resolution and upscales the image. Graphics preset, ray-tracing mode, upscaling, the scene, and your system configuration can all affect performance. CD PROJEKT RED says its expected frame-rate targets are based on QA tests and can fluctuate with scene, configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution, so a hardware label alone does not determine a fixed frame rate. Verify or repair files in the right storefront
Corrupted installation files can cause crashes, graphical glitches, or prevent the game from launching. Use the verification or repair feature for the storefront where the game is installed; do not start by manually deleting game files.

- Platform, storefront, and game version shown in the main menu.
- Whether the problem happens before REDlauncher, when selecting Play, or after the game starts.
- DirectX mode and whether mods, trainers, console commands, overlays, or custom launch parameters are in use.
- The exact error message or code, if one appears, and a DxDiag report where relevant.
- For performance issues, a video if possible; for a location-specific problem, the relevant files from the save folder.
Check the current CD PROJEKT RED support form for submission options. Preserve your save data before any clean reinstall, and use the official clean-install instructions linked from support because installation paths can differ.
Do you need an SSD?
CD PROJEKT RED’s updated PC requirements page says an SSD is required for the game’s latest technical enhancements. That is a requirements issue for a system without an SSD—not evidence that adding one universally fixes crashes, launch failures, or stuttering. Check the current PC requirements for the applicable version.
