The reliable fix is to move scheduling from traffic-triggered WP-Cron to your server. In wp-config.php, set DISABLE_WP_CRON to the Boolean value true, then configure a host-level cron job that requests wp-cron.php every 15 minutes or at another interval your workload supports. Verify the result with wp cron test. This removes the dependency on visitors loading your site, which is the usual reason scheduled posts remain pending and WordPress reports a missed schedule.

What the “missed schedule” error means
WordPress does not run its task queue continuously like a system daemon. Its built-in WP-Cron runner checks for due events when a page request reaches the site. If nobody visits during the time a post is due, there may be no request to trigger the check. A low-traffic site can therefore leave a post unpublished for hours even though its schedule and timezone are correct.

The same symptom appears when a host, security layer, cache, or configuration prevents the loopback request from reaching wp-cron.php. The “missed schedule” wording is used by third-party guides and plugins; it is a symptom, not a separate WordPress scheduling engine.
How WP-Cron runs scheduled work
Default, traffic-dependent mode
On a normal request, WordPress checks its event queue and calls spawn_cron(). That function starts a non-blocking HTTP request back to wp-cron.php, allowing due hooks such as publishing, cleanup, and plugin jobs to run without making the visitor wait. The process is intentionally lightweight, but its timing is limited by traffic and by whether the server permits the loopback request.

What changes when cron is disabled
If DISABLE_WP_CRON is defined as true, WordPress’s normal request path does not run the queue. That is intentional: a separate scheduler is expected to call wp-cron.php. Defining the constant does not create a scheduler by itself; without the second step, scheduled posts will continue to be missed.
WordPress 6.9 and the callback timing change
In WordPress 6.9.0, the private _wp_cron() callback moved from the wp_loaded action to shutdown unless ALTERNATE_WP_CRON is enabled. This changes when the check is attached during a request, but it does not remove the need for a trigger. Plugin authors should use WordPress’s public scheduling APIs rather than calling the private function directly.

Choose the right scheduling method

For a production site that must publish on time, use the server-cron method. Use either that method or ALTERNATE_WP_CRON, not both; third-party hosting guidance reports that the two approaches conflict. The alternate mode is a fallback for particular redirect or loopback problems, not a replacement for an independent scheduler.
Before you edit anything
- Confirm the post has a future date and is assigned the intended site timezone.
- Make a backup of
wp-config.phpand note how to restore it if the site returns a PHP error. - Determine whether you can edit files and create a cron job in your host’s control panel or shell.
- Check whether
DISABLE_WP_CRONorALTERNATE_WP_CRONalready appears inwp-config.php; duplicate definitions can make troubleshooting confusing. - Record the site’s exact HTTPS address. The cron request must use your real domain, including any required subdirectory.

1. Inspect and edit wp-config.php
Open the configuration file in the WordPress installation directory. Look for:

define('DISABLE_WP_CRON', true);If the line is absent, add it before the comment that says “That’s all, stop editing” (or the equivalent end-of-configuration marker). If it exists with false, change the value to true. Use the Boolean value exactly as shown, without quotation marks around true; 'true' is a string and is not the intended setting.
Save the file and load the site once. If you see a PHP parse or “critical error” screen, restore the backup and correct the syntax before continuing. Do not add a second definition elsewhere in the file.

2. Open your host’s cron scheduler
In cPanel, the reported path is Advanced > Cron Jobs. Other hosts may label the feature “Cron,” “Scheduled tasks,” or “Server tasks.” If no scheduler is exposed, ask the host whether account-level cron access is available; the server-cron solution cannot run without a scheduler that can make an outbound request.
3. Select an interval
Third-party WordPress hosting guides commonly suggest every 15 minutes or hourly. A 15-minute schedule limits the normal maximum delay to roughly one interval while reducing request frequency compared with per-minute polling. Hourly execution uses fewer resources but can leave a post waiting up to an hour. Choose the shortest interval your host permits and your queue requires; do not claim minute-level precision from an hourly job.

4. Add the request command
A command reported by hosting guides uses wget:
wget -q -O - https://yourdomain.com/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron > /dev/null 2>&1Replace https://yourdomain.com with the site’s actual HTTPS URL. The query string doing_wp_cron is included in the documented pattern. Redirecting output to /dev/null prevents a message on every run; removing that redirection temporarily can help diagnose DNS, TLS, authentication, or HTTP errors.
This exact command is a third-party example rather than a universal WordPress requirement. Some hosts do not install wget, restrict outbound HTTP, or require a full executable path. If the command is rejected, ask the host for its supported HTTP client or use the scheduler’s documented PHP/CLI form instead. Do not paste a command that points to another domain or to an HTTP (unencrypted) URL when your site uses HTTPS.

Save the cron entry, then allow at least one scheduled run. A newly due post may not publish immediately if the first run has not occurred or if another process still holds the WP-Cron lock. Keep the job enabled; deleting the entry after one successful publication returns the site to traffic-dependent behavior.
6. Clear relevant caches
Clear the site and page caches after changing the configuration. A cache can serve an old page without generating the request you expect, and some cache plugins alter cron-related behavior. Purging the cache does not run the queue itself; it removes stale output while you test the new trigger.

Verify the setup with WP-CLI
Run the built-in test
From the WordPress installation directory, run:
wp cron testThe command performs an HTTP-based WP-Cron test and reports whether the request can be spawned. It warns when the response is not HTTP 200. It errors when DISABLE_WP_CRON is set, because disabling the built-in path is expected to prevent this particular test route. It also warns when ALTERNATE_WP_CRON is enabled. Interpret those messages in context: a disabled constant is correct for a server-cron design, but you still need to prove that the host-level job reaches wp-cron.php.
Check the event queue
If you need to see which hooks are waiting, install and use the WP Crontrol plugin to inspect scheduled events. Look for the post-publication event and its next-run time. A queue with a continually advancing next-run time indicates that the scheduler is reaching WordPress; a queue that never advances points to the request, lock, or server layer.

Run the same wget command manually from the account or server that owns the cron job. Temporarily remove > /dev/null 2>&1 so errors are visible. Check the HTTP status, certificate validation, DNS resolution, and whether a firewall or maintenance mode returns a non-200 response. Once the manual request succeeds, restore output suppression and let the scheduler run it automatically.
If posts are still missed, isolate the cause
Check the WordPress timezone
A correct cron trigger can still publish at an unexpected time if the site timezone is wrong. In the WordPress administration area, open Settings > General and verify the “Timezone” value, then compare the displayed local time with the server’s clock. Correct the timezone before rescheduling a test post so you do not mistake a time-zone offset for a missed run.

Look for plugin or theme conflicts
A plugin or theme can prevent a scheduled callback from completing even when wp-cron.php is reached. Reproduce the issue with nonessential plugins disabled, then test with a standard theme. If the site is inaccessible through the dashboard, a technical administrator can temporarily rename the active theme directory over FTP to force a fallback theme. Reactivate components one at a time until the failure returns, then update or replace the conflicting component.
Investigate server resource limits
CPU, memory, process, or execution-time limits can delay or terminate cron callbacks. Review the host’s PHP and web-server error logs around the scheduled run, and ask whether account limits are being reached. A job that starts but is repeatedly killed needs a resource or workload fix; increasing the cron frequency will not solve an exhausted process limit.
Check HTTP and security barriers
Because the default runner and the verification command use HTTP requests, a basic-auth wall, web-application firewall, IP restriction, redirect loop, invalid certificate, or blocked loopback connection can cause failures. The cron URL must resolve from the server where the job runs, not merely from your desktop browser. A non-200 result from wp cron test is a signal to inspect these barriers.
Account for the cron lock
WordPress prevents overlapping runs with the WP_CRON_LOCK_TIMEOUT lock. The developer documentation’s example uses 60 seconds. If a long-running job still holds the lock, another invocation may defer work until the lock expires. Avoid stacking several cron entries that call the same URL at once; instead, keep one predictable schedule and address the slow callback.
When ALTERNATE_WP_CRON is appropriate
ALTERNATE_WP_CRON changes the trigger to a redirect-based path for a page request. It can help when the normal non-blocking loopback request cannot be made, but it still depends on someone making a qualifying request. The documented behavior applies only to GET requests and skips AJAX and XML-RPC requests, so it is not a general-purpose background scheduler.
Because it relies on a redirect rather than WordPress’s native loopback mechanism, the developer documentation describes risks. Test it only when your host’s request path requires it, and never combine it with a server cron while diagnosing the same site. If you later move to a host-level schedule, remove the alternate constant and use only DISABLE_WP_CRON plus the server job.
Operational checklist for reliable scheduled publishing
- Keep exactly one scheduling strategy active: default traffic-triggered WP-Cron, server cron with
DISABLE_WP_CRON, or the alternate redirect mode. - Use a Boolean
trueforDISABLE_WP_CRON, not a quoted string. - Point the scheduler at the site’s canonical HTTPS
wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cronURL. - Choose and document the interval, such as every 15 minutes or hourly, so editors know the expected delay.
- Run
wp cron testafter configuration changes and investigate any non-200 response. - Inspect the event queue when a specific post fails instead of repeatedly editing its date.
- Clear caches after configuration changes and check logs for plugin, theme, PHP, and resource errors.
- Review the cron entry after hosting migrations, domain changes, HTTPS changes, or control-panel resets.
What success looks like
A successful setup has three independent signs: the server scheduler records a completed request, WordPress’s event queue advances without a growing backlog, and a newly scheduled test post changes to published status within the chosen interval. If only the first sign appears, inspect WordPress callbacks and conflicts. If the first sign fails, focus on the cron command, host permissions, DNS, TLS, and firewall rules. Separating those layers prevents endless changes to post dates when the real problem is the trigger itself.
