A WordPress white screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can result from a PHP fatal error, a database error, an incompatible plugin, a broken theme, or a server configuration problem. The safest recovery is to isolate the last change, disable plugins or the theme without deleting anything, collect the error privately, and then restore components one at a time.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What the WordPress white screen means
The “White Screen of Death” (WSOD) is a page that renders as completely blank, sometimes with no browser error at all. It may affect only the public site, only wp-admin, one page, or the entire installation. WordPress documentation notes that both PHP errors and database errors can produce a blank screen; plugin compatibility and theme problems are common avenues to investigate.

A blank page is therefore an observation, not a root cause. Do not start by deleting files or reinstalling WordPress. First establish which parts still work and what changed immediately before the failure.
Before changing anything: preserve a way back
- Record the scope. Test the home page, a known inner page,
/wp-login.php, and/wp-admin/in a private browser window. Note whether the blank response affects logged-in users, visitors, or both. - Write down the timing. Look for a plugin or theme activation/update, a WordPress update, a PHP-version change, a hosting migration, or a database change. Timing is a clue, not proof.
- Make or verify a backup. Keep a copy of the database and the WordPress files before editing them. If the site is revenue-producing or you cannot use the host’s file tools confidently, ask the host to take a snapshot or assist with the change.
- Avoid destructive “fixes.” Do not delete a plugin, theme,
wp-config.php, or database table while the cause is unknown. Renaming a directory is reversible; deleting it is not.
Use this decision path
| What you can access | First action | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The dashboard and the affected page | Deactivate all plugins, then reactivate them individually. | A plugin that makes the page fail again is the leading suspect. |
| The dashboard, but the public site is blank | Test with a default WordPress theme after the plugin test. | If the default theme works, investigate the previous theme’s code or compatibility. |
| Neither the dashboard nor the public site | Use FTP or the host’s file manager to rename the plugins directory. | If access returns, a plugin is involved; continue with one-at-a-time isolation. |
| File access, but no useful change after disabling plugins | Rename the active theme directory and ensure a usable default theme is installed. | WordPress may fall back to the default theme, identifying a theme-side failure. |
| Persistent blank output after plugin/theme isolation | Collect PHP, web-server, and database details with debugging kept private. | The fault may be outside WordPress code: PHP limits, server configuration, or the database. |
If you can still open the WordPress dashboard
1. Deactivate every plugin
- Sign in to
/wp-admin/. - Open Plugins > Installed Plugins.
- Select all active plugins, choose Deactivate from the bulk-action menu, and apply the action.
- Open the page that was blank in a private window or after clearing the page cache.
If the page now loads, the plugin layer is implicated. Reactivate one plugin, test the same URL, and repeat. Keep a written order of activation and the result. The first plugin whose activation reproduces the blank page is a suspect, not automatically the confirmed cause: it may conflict with another plugin, the current theme, WordPress, or the PHP version.

2. Leave the suspect disabled while you verify
Check the plugin’s compatibility information and available updates, but do not update several components at once. If an update is available, take a fresh backup and test it in a staging copy when possible. If no safe update exists, keep the plugin disabled and contact its maintainer or replace the functionality only after the site is stable.
3. Test the active theme
When disabling all plugins does not restore the page, open Appearance > Themes and activate an installed default WordPress theme. Test the same page again. A successful result points toward the former theme, its customizations, or a theme–plugin interaction. Preserve the original theme files and child-theme changes; switching themes does not repair defective code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Check whether only one URL fails
If the home page works but a single post, template, or admin screen remains blank, compare that URL with a newly created test page. A failure limited to one template or piece of content can indicate theme code, a shortcode, or data that triggers an error rather than a site-wide outage. Keep the plugin and theme isolation notes so you can restore the working configuration.
If wp-admin is also blank
Use a file-transfer account or the hosting provider’s file manager. Provider interfaces and paths differ, but the WordPress directories are normally visible beneath the installation directory. Do not rename files outside that installation unless the host identifies them as part of this site.
Disable all plugins by renaming their directory
- Open the WordPress installation and then
wp-content. - Rename
pluginsto a temporary name such asplugins_old. Renaming disables the plugins together without deleting their files. - Retry the public page and
/wp-admin/. - If access returns, restore the directory name to
plugins. In the dashboard, the plugins will be inactive; reactivate them individually while testing.
If the site remains blank with the directory renamed, the immediate cause may not be a plugin. Restore the original name before proceeding to the theme test unless you have a specific reason to leave it changed.

Force a theme fallback
- Open
wp-content/themes. - Identify the directory of the active theme and rename that directory, for example by appending
_old. - Make sure an intact default WordPress theme is installed in the same
themesdirectory. Without a usable fallback, WordPress may still have nothing to render. - Test the site and dashboard. If they load, restore the original directory name when you are ready to inspect or update the theme, then switch deliberately to the default theme from the dashboard.
These changes alter the live site immediately. If you are unsure which directory is active, cannot identify the installation, or have no backup, stop and ask the host for file-level assistance rather than guessing.
Database-based plugin deactivation: when file access is not enough
WordPress’s troubleshooting FAQ also documents deactivating plugins through the database for administrators who already know how to use phpMyAdmin. This is an advanced route: the exact table prefix and serialized option structure vary by installation, and an incorrect edit can disable more than intended or damage the database.
If you are not comfortable locating the correct WordPress database, identifying its table prefix, and exporting a backup before editing, ask the hosting provider to perform the change or follow that provider’s documentation. Do not run a generic SQL statement copied from an unrelated installation. Once dashboard access returns, complete the one-at-a-time plugin test and remove any temporary database workaround.
Turn on debugging without exposing errors to visitors
Debugging can turn an empty response into a PHP error message or a log entry. WordPress Developer Resources states that “The WP_DEBUG feature often provides additional information.” Treat that information as sensitive: file paths, database details, usernames, and server configuration can help an attacker.
Use a private log
In a controlled maintenance window, follow the current WordPress debugging documentation for your installation and hosting stack. The WP_DEBUG_LOG setting can write errors to wp-content/debug.log. Configure debugging so errors are logged rather than displayed to visitors, reproduce the failure once, and then inspect the relevant entries.

A typical temporary configuration uses the WordPress debug constants in wp-config.php; copy the exact syntax and placement from the current official documentation rather than pasting settings into the wrong section. Do not enable visible error output on a public production site.
Read the first meaningful error
Start with the earliest fatal error at the time of the blank response. Note the file path, line number, function or class named, and whether the path belongs to a plugin, theme, WordPress core, or a server-side dependency. A plugin path supports the isolation test; a theme path supports the fallback test; a core or PHP path calls for version and hosting investigation.
Turn debugging off and protect the log
- Disable the temporary debug settings after collecting the evidence.
- Confirm that visitors no longer see error details.
- Protect, download through a secure channel, or remove
wp-content/debug.logaccording to your security process. Do not leave a publicly readable log containing paths or credentials.
Site Health treats public debug output or an exposed debug log as a security risk. A log that is useful during diagnosis should not become a permanent information leak.
Use Recovery Mode when WordPress offers it
WordPress’s fatal-error handler, introduced in version 5.2, can provide Recovery Mode for a plugin-caused fatal error. Instead of the older blank page, the site may show a technical-difficulties message and send recovery instructions to the site administrator’s email address.
- Check the administrator mailbox associated with the site, including spam and filtering folders.
- Use the recovery link only on the affected site and within the period provided in the message.
- Read the component named in the notice, deactivate or update it, and retest the public page and dashboard.
- Exit Recovery Mode and verify the site in a normal, logged-out browser session.
Recovery Mode is a targeted aid, not proof that every white screen is a plugin fatal error. A database failure, server error, incompatible theme, or suppressed PHP error may still produce a blank response without a recovery email.

Inspect Site Health after access returns
Open Tools > Site Health. The Status tab groups critical issues, recommended improvements, and passed tests. The Info tab provides configuration details and a view of themes, plugins, and other technical information that can help you or a host support technician compare the working and failing states.
Use the information view to record WordPress and PHP versions, active and inactive extensions, the active theme, and relevant server limits. Do not publish the complete report: it can contain details that should be shared only with a trusted administrator or support provider.

PHP version or configuration change
If the outage began after a PHP change, ask the host which PHP version was active before and after the change and whether the server error log records a fatal error. A component that worked on one PHP version can fail on another. Restore a known-good configuration only with the host’s guidance, then update or replace incompatible code.

A white screen can represent a database error even when no database message is visible. Look for database connection or query errors in the private server and WordPress logs. Do not repair tables or edit credentials until you have confirmed the database name, user, password, host, and table prefix with the provider or your configuration records.
Server and resource limits
Ask the host to check web-server error logs, PHP error logs, memory and execution limits, file permissions, and whether the account has exceeded a resource quota. These controls differ by host, so there is no universal control-panel path or one setting that fixes every blank response.

Caching and reverse proxies
If logs show a successful request but browsers still display an old blank response, purge the relevant page, object, and reverse-proxy caches after the underlying error is fixed. Test from a private window and, when possible, from a second network. Caching should be checked after code and server errors, not used to hide them.
Recover in a controlled order
Once the site loads with plugins disabled or a default theme active, resist the temptation to switch everything back on at once. Use this order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Keep the known-working state and make a backup.
- Restore the original directory names if you used file renaming.
- Activate the default theme or the original theme deliberately, testing after the change.
- Reactivate one plugin at a time, testing the same pages and key workflows after each activation.
- When a failure returns, leave the last component disabled and record the exact URL, timestamp, and error entry.
- Update, configure, replace, or remove the confirmed conflict only after preserving the evidence and a rollback copy.
This sequence distinguishes a single defective component from an interaction between two components. It also gives you a reproducible report for a developer or host.
Common mistakes that make a white screen harder to fix
- Changing several variables together: updating WordPress, PHP, the theme, and multiple plugins at once destroys the timing clue.
- Deleting before diagnosing: removal can erase configuration, customizations, and evidence needed to identify the failure.
- Leaving debug output enabled: public stack traces and logs disclose implementation details.
- Assuming Recovery Mode covers every case: it is designed for certain fatal errors, especially plugin-related ones, not every blank response.
- Renaming the wrong directory: work only inside the affected WordPress installation and record every name you change.
- Editing the database without a backup: a table prefix and option format are installation-specific; obtain expert help if phpMyAdmin is unfamiliar.
- Testing only while logged in: caches, permissions, and logged-in behavior can differ from what visitors receive.
When to contact hosting support
Escalate when you cannot reach the files, need server or PHP logs, suspect a database problem, or are not experienced with phpMyAdmin. WordPress specifically advises readers unfamiliar with database administration to ask their hosting provider for assistance or consult the provider’s documentation.
Give support a concise handoff:
- The first time and URL where the blank screen appeared.
- What changed immediately beforehand.
- Whether the public site, login screen, and dashboard each load.
- Which directory renames or dashboard deactivations you performed and whether each changed the result.
- The relevant private log entry, with passwords, keys, and unrelated personal data removed.
- Whether a backup or snapshot is available.
Ask the provider to identify the server-side error, confirm the active PHP configuration, and advise on a reversible correction. Avoid sending a publicly accessible debug URL or an unredacted configuration file.
A compact recovery checklist
- Confirm whether the blank response affects the frontend, login, dashboard, or only one URL.
- Record the last plugin, theme, WordPress, PHP, server, or database change.
- Back up files and the database.
- With dashboard access: deactivate all plugins, then test them individually; switch to a default theme if needed.
- Without dashboard access: rename
wp-content/plugins, then the active theme directory underwp-content/themes, using a file manager or FTP. - Use database deactivation only if you understand phpMyAdmin and have a backup; otherwise ask the host.
- Enable private logging only long enough to reproduce the issue; inspect the first relevant error.
- Check administrator email for Recovery Mode instructions.
- Review Tools > Site Health once access returns.
- Restore components one at a time and turn debugging off when finished.
