If the Xbox app will not open, is stuck on “Launching,” shows a blank window, or closes immediately in Windows 11, start with Windows’ built-in app repair controls. Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, open Xbox’s menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and choose Reset. Only after those steps should you investigate Microsoft Store updates, Gaming Services, or account and package troubleshooting.
Use this order first: Repair, then Reset
Repair is the least disruptive documented fix because it attempts to correct the app without immediately discarding its stored state. Reset is the next built-in option when Repair is missing or ineffective. Microsoft Support summarizes the sequence this way: “If it isn’t available or doesn’t fix the problem, select Reset.” The controls are available only for apps that expose them, so the Xbox entry may not show every option on every Windows 11 installation.

| Step | Windows 11 path | When to use it | Disruption and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair | Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox > More > Advanced options > Repair | First attempt for a blank window, “Launching” loop, or immediate close | Lowest-disruption built-in action; documented by Microsoft Support |
| Reset | Return to Xbox > Advanced options > Reset | Repair is not shown or did not change the behavior | More disruptive because the app is returned to a default state; documented as the next Microsoft step |
| Store updates | Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates | Use after Repair or Reset, especially if Xbox or Gaming Services is outdated | Suggested in a Microsoft Q&A answer labeled AI-generated, so treat it as a check rather than a guaranteed fix |
| Gaming Services escalation | Use Microsoft’s current Gaming Services repair guidance | Persistent installation, update, sign-in, or launch problems after the built-in steps | Recommended by a Microsoft Q&A moderator, but community guidance is not a guaranteed remedy |
1. Run Repair
- Open Start, select Settings, and open Apps.
- Select Installed apps. In some Windows 11 builds, this list may take a moment to populate.
- Find Xbox. Use the search box if the list is long.
- Select the Xbox entry’s More button (the three-dot menu), then choose Advanced options.
- Scroll to the Reset section and select Repair, if the button is available.
- Wait for Windows to finish. Then launch Xbox from Start and test the behavior that originally failed.
Test the same action that exposed the problem. For example, if the app previously remained on “Launching,” check whether the home screen now appears and whether you can reach the sign-in screen. A successful Repair should be judged by the app opening normally, not merely by the settings page closing. Keep the Xbox window closed while the operation runs, and do not interrupt Windows if the button briefly appears inactive.

- Return to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Open Xbox’s More menu and select Advanced options.
- Select Reset, then confirm the Windows prompt.
- After Windows completes the reset, open Xbox again and test it before making other system changes.
Reset is intentionally the second step. It is more disruptive than Repair because Windows reinitializes the app rather than making a lighter correction. Plan to repeat any app-level setup, such as signing in, if Windows asks for it. If Advanced options, Repair, or Reset is not present, that is a property of the installed app package—not a reason to force an unrelated system modification. Continue with the evidence-gathering and update checks below.

Do not assume that a missing button means your Windows installation is damaged. Microsoft notes that some installed apps simply do not expose these controls. Record which controls are absent so support knows exactly what you saw.
Identify exactly how Xbox is failing
“The Xbox app is not working” can describe several different failures. Record the visible behavior before trying advanced fixes; the distinction helps Microsoft support separate an app-package problem from a Gaming Services, sign-in, or account issue.
- Nothing appears: you select Xbox and no window opens.
- Blank window: a window opens but contains no usable content.
- Startup-screen loop: the app remains on a startup screen or displays “Launching Xbox App.”
- Immediate close: a window flashes and exits.
- Sign-in failure: the shell opens, but authentication fails or loops.
- Visible error: Windows or Xbox shows an error code or explanatory message.
Write down which case applies, when it began, and whether the issue affects only Xbox or also Microsoft Store and other Microsoft apps. Do not describe a forum example such as “stuck on the startup screen” as a measured common failure; those phrases come from individual users.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also note whether the failure occurs every time or only after waking the PC, switching networks, or selecting a particular game. These observations do not diagnose the cause, but they prevent support from having to guess whether the problem is launch, authentication, installation, or a single title.
Check Microsoft Store and Xbox component updates
After Repair or Reset, check for updates through the Microsoft Store. Open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates. Let the process finish, then look for updates involving Xbox and Gaming Services if they appear in the list. Restart Windows and test Xbox again.
If the Store itself will not open, record that fact rather than immediately deleting Store or Xbox packages. It means the update check cannot be completed through this route and gives support another useful symptom. If updates are offered, allow each one to finish before launching Xbox; testing halfway through an update can produce a misleading result.

This check is sensible because the Xbox PC experience depends on more than the visible Xbox app. However, the specific Microsoft Q&A answer that recommends this sequence is explicitly labeled AI-generated and warns that it may be incorrect. Treat Store updates as a low-risk diagnostic step, not proof that an outdated package caused your failure and not a promised solution.
Why Gaming Services can matter without being the automatic culprit
On Windows PC, Xbox services rely on both the Xbox app and Gaming Services. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation explains that outdated versions of either can produce unexpected sign-in failures. That documentation is written for developers diagnosing PC game sign-in and development sandboxes, not as a complete consumer repair manual.
The practical implication is limited but useful: if Xbox still fails after Repair, Reset, and updates—particularly around installation, updating, or sign-in—Gaming Services is a reasonable escalation area. It does not establish that Gaming Services causes every app-launch problem. A blank window, an immediate close, and an authentication error may have different causes.
Gaming Services is therefore a dependency to investigate, not a diagnosis to announce. Avoid statements such as “Gaming Services is definitely broken” unless an error message or Microsoft support confirms it. This distinction matters because changing a dependency can affect installed games and make later troubleshooting harder.
Try Gaming Services troubleshooting only as an escalation
A Microsoft External Staff moderator in a Windows 11 Q&A discussion points affected users toward Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC for Gaming Services installation or update problems. The recommendation is stronger than a random internet workaround because it comes from a Microsoft support discussion, but it remains forum guidance rather than a guaranteed fix.
Use the current instructions on Microsoft’s official Gaming Services support page if you decide to try the tool. Detailed tool steps were not available in the referenced material, so do not rely on copied commands from an unrelated post or on an old screenshot. Confirm that the page and tool apply to your Windows 11 installation before proceeding. A page that asks you to download an unexpected executable or disable security protections is not a substitute for Microsoft’s current instructions.

Set expectations correctly. In the cited discussion, the user later reported that the suggested repair steps did not resolve the problem. That report does not show that the tool never works; it shows why the tool should be treated as an escalation, not as a certain cure. If the tool reports an error, capture the exact text and stop rather than repeatedly running increasingly invasive fixes.
Package re-registration and a new Windows account: last-resort diagnostic ideas
The same Microsoft Q&A material mentions Xbox app package re-registration and testing from a new local Windows account after other troubleshooting fails. These are diagnostic ideas, not universally validated remedies. They can help distinguish a damaged per-user package or profile from a machine-wide Gaming Services problem, but they also require more care than Repair or Reset.
Package re-registration
Do not paste a PowerShell command from a random forum simply because it claims to “reinstall Xbox.” Package names and permissions can vary by Windows build, and an incorrect command can create a second problem. If Microsoft support gives you a re-registration command, obtain it in the same conversation where you provide your Windows version and error details, and follow that version-specific instruction exactly. Save the command and its output so you can report what changed.
Testing a new local Windows account
A temporary local account can be used as a comparison: if Xbox opens there but not in your usual profile, the problem may be tied to per-user app data or account configuration. If it fails in both accounts, a machine-wide component becomes more plausible. This test does not identify the cause by itself, and it is not a reason to abandon your Microsoft account or move personal files. Remove the temporary account only after you have recorded the result and no longer need it for support.
Because both approaches come from community troubleshooting rather than a documented, universal repair procedure, use them with Microsoft guidance and keep a record of every change. Avoid registry edits, deleting protected folders, disabling security software, or removing system packages solely on the basis of an unverified forum post.
A decision table for the next move
| Observed behavior | Do next | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| No window, blank window, or immediate close | Run Repair, then Reset if needed | Tests the app’s own Windows repair path before touching dependencies |
| Xbox opens but remains on “Launching” | Complete Repair/Reset, restart Windows, then check Store Library > Get updates | Checks both the app state and available component updates |
| Sign-in fails after the app opens | Check Xbox and Gaming Services updates; consider Gaming Services guidance | Gaming Services documentation links outdated components with unexpected sign-in failures, but does not prove causation in your case |
| Repair and Reset are missing | Record that the controls are unavailable; check Store updates and seek support | Some installed apps do not expose these options |
| Gaming Services tool does not help | Stop repeating the same repair; capture the tool result and escalate with system details | The cited community user reported no resolution, so another diagnosis is needed |
| Works in a new local account only | Tell support the failure is profile-specific and ask for version-appropriate package/account guidance | Suggests a per-user issue without proving which file or setting is responsible |

Recommended Free Tools
Include the date the problem began and any immediately preceding change, such as a Windows update, app update, new account, or restored backup. Those details are often more useful than a long list of commands that were tried without recording their results.
What to avoid while troubleshooting
- Do not skip straight to invasive changes. Registry edits, manual deletion of protected app folders, and broad PowerShell removal commands can make later diagnosis harder.
- Do not treat an AI-generated forum answer as official documentation. The Store-update suggestion is explicitly labeled AI-generated in the cited discussion and may be wrong.
- Do not assume every Xbox failure is Gaming Services. Microsoft’s developer documentation establishes relevance, not a universal consumer diagnosis.
- Do not repeat a failed tool run indefinitely. Record the result and move to support with the error details.
- Do not report anecdotal wording as prevalence. “Stuck on the startup screen” and “Launching the Xbox App” describe individual reports, not statistics about Windows 11 users.
- Do not download unofficial “fix” utilities. No third-party cleaner, driver tool, controller, console, or replacement hardware is shown to resolve this Windows app launch problem.
Recommended sequence in one checklist
- Close any Xbox window and restart Windows once, so a transient process is not mistaken for a persistent failure.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- For Xbox, open More > Advanced options and select Repair.
- Test Xbox using the same action that failed.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, return to the same page and select Reset.
- Restart Windows, then open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates.
- If the problem persists—especially an installation, update, or sign-in failure—review Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool guidance.
- If that escalation fails, preserve the exact symptoms, Windows build, error codes, and test results. Ask Microsoft support about version-specific package re-registration or a new-account comparison instead of applying unverified commands.
This order keeps the lowest-risk, Microsoft-documented action first and reserves community-sourced escalation ideas for cases that remain unresolved. It also leaves support with the details needed to investigate a failure that does not match a single universal fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Repair delete my Xbox games or account?
Repair is the lighter built-in action and is intended to correct the app without immediately discarding its stored state. It does not reinstall your games. If you later use Reset, the app returns to a default state and may ask you to sign in or repeat app-level setup.
What if I cannot find Advanced options for Xbox?
Windows does not expose Advanced options, Repair, or Reset for every installed app package. Record which option is missing, check Microsoft Store updates, and include that detail when contacting support rather than forcing a package removal.
Should I reinstall Gaming Services immediately?
No. Start with Xbox Repair and, if needed, Reset. Gaming Services is relevant to Xbox services and outdated components can contribute to sign-in failures, but Microsoft’s developer documentation does not prove it is the cause of every launch problem.

Is the Gaming Services Repair Tool guaranteed to fix the Xbox app?
No. A Microsoft Q&A moderator recommended the tool for Gaming Services installation or update problems, but forum guidance is not a guarantee and a user in that discussion reported that the suggested steps did not resolve the issue.
What does “Launching Xbox App” indicate?
It describes a startup-screen loop reported by individual users. Complete Repair and Reset first, restart Windows, and then check Store updates. The wording alone does not identify whether the app package, Gaming Services, or sign-in is responsible.
Can a new local Windows account prove my main account is broken?
It can provide a useful comparison. If Xbox works only in the new account, a per-user package or profile issue becomes more plausible; if it fails in both, a machine-wide component becomes more plausible. Neither result proves a specific cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat information should I send Microsoft support?
Provide your Windows 11 version and build, the exact behavior, every error code, whether Repair and Reset were available, Store update results, any Gaming Services tool output, and whether the app behaves differently in a new local account.
Should I use a third-party PC repair utility or buy hardware?
No supported evidence here shows that a cleaner, repair device, Xbox controller, console, replacement part, or troubleshooting book fixes an Xbox app launch failure. Use Windows and Microsoft guidance first.
The Bottom Line
Use Windows 11’s documented sequence: Xbox > Advanced options > Repair, then Reset if Repair is unavailable or ineffective. Check Microsoft Store updates afterward. Treat Gaming Services Repair Tool, package re-registration, and new-account testing as cautious escalation steps, record every error, and give Microsoft support your Windows build and exact symptoms.
