Diablo IV’s “There was a problem logging in (Code 1)” message means the login attempt failed, but it does not identify one confirmed cause. Start by checking Blizzard’s current service notices. If there is no reported incident, try simple account, platform, and game checks before repairing files or reinstalling.
What Diablo IV Code 1 means
Code 1 is a login failure message, not a diagnosis of a hardware fault or a specific problem with your installation. Reports show it on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, sometimes alongside difficulty signing in to Battle.net or other login errors. That pattern makes an authentication or service availability issue possible in some incidents, but it does not prove that every Code 1 is server-side.

Blizzard-hosted forum posts document the message on June 25, 2023; July 27, 2023; March 4, 2025; and March 25, 2026. They are player reports, not an official technical definition of the code or confirmation of current service status.
How to troubleshoot Code 1
- Check Blizzard’s current service notices. If Blizzard reports login trouble or maintenance, wait for the notice to update and then try again. A historical forum post quoted a banner about authentication-server problems, but that does not establish that an outage is happening now.
- Retry after a short wait and restart Diablo IV. One player in a July 2023 discussion said they got in after about 30 minutes during a broader login problem. That is an anecdote, not proof that waiting caused the recovery or a guaranteed waiting period.
- Check your account and platform sign-in. Try signing in to Battle.net on PC, or check whether your console account and its online services are working. If those sign-ins are also failing, the issue may extend beyond Diablo IV; this check alone cannot identify the cause.
- Restart your platform and check for updates. Restart the PC or console, then make sure Diablo IV—and the Battle.net launcher on PC—are up to date. These are low-risk checks, not confirmed Code 1-specific fixes.
- On PC, try the launcher’s scan-and-repair option if the simpler checks do not help. A player reported that scanning and repairing did not resolve their error during one incident, so this is not a dependable remedy for a service-side login failure.
- Leave reinstalling until last. One forum user said reinstalling resolved their instance, but that is an individual report. The discussion also included signs of broader login trouble, and there is no controlled evidence that reinstalling fixes Code 1.
When the error appears with other codes
Players have reported Code 1 alongside Codes 73 and 300010, including in PlayStation and Xbox discussions. Those reports show that the messages have appeared in the same login episodes; they do not establish that one code causes another or that the same explanation applies in every case.
#1 Best Overall
If Code 1 appears during a wider sign-in problem, use service notices and account/platform checks to decide whether to wait or continue local troubleshooting. If it persists after those services are available and your accounts can sign in, the reports cited here do not provide a definitive diagnosis for an individual connection or account.

What the reports can—and cannot—confirm
- Players have reported Code 1 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
- Some historical reports coincided with Battle.net sign-in trouble or a reported authentication-server issue.
- The reports do not establish an official technical definition, prove that every occurrence is server-side, or confirm a current outage.
- Waiting, restarting, scan-and-repair, and reinstalling are anecdotal or basic troubleshooting checks—not universal, verified fixes.
