How to Fix Ultrawide Issues in VALORANT on Widescreen Monitors

By VGSources Team 7 min read

To fix VALORANT on a 21:9 or 32:9 monitor, first set Windows and VALORANT to the monitor’s native resolution, then choose between Letterbox for correct proportions or Fill for a full-width but stretched image. Use Fullscreen when you need reliable resolution and GPU-scaling control; use Windowed Fullscreen if Fullscreen causes Alt+Tab or resolution-reversion problems.

Black bars, stretched graphics, cropping, zooming, and repeated resolution changes have different causes. The steps below separate the dependable fix from experimental custom-resolution methods.

Identify the ultrawide problem first

Symptom Likely cause First action
Black bars on the left and right Aspect-preserving scaling Use Full-screen or Full panel scaling only if you want stretching.
Wide or distorted image Full-screen stretching Use Aspect ratio or Preserve aspect ratio.
Cropped or zoomed image Wrong resolution, monitor scaling, or an incompatible custom mode Return to the monitor’s native resolution.
VALORANT ignores the ultrawide resolution Windowed Fullscreen, Windows display mode, driver override, or saved settings Match Windows and VALORANT resolutions, then restart the game.
Resolution changes after launch Fullscreen conflict or saved configuration Try Fullscreen, apply the setting, and restart. If it remains unstable, try Windowed Fullscreen.
Black screen after Alt+Tab Windows fullscreen handling Disable fullscreen optimizations or use Windowed Fullscreen.
UI is stretched but player models are not Different parts of the output are being scaled differently Stop using the partial stretch method and test native resolution with a supported scaling mode.
Image is shifted to one side Monitor or GPU scaling alignment Temporarily use Center or No scaling, then apply the desired mode again.

What Letterbox, Fill, and stretching actually do

A standard 16:9 image does not have the same shape as a 21:9 or 32:9 display. A 21:9 monitor commonly uses 2560×1080 or 3440×1440, while a 32:9 monitor may use 3840×1080 or 5120×1440.

  • Letterboxing: preserves the image’s proportions and leaves unused space as black bars.
  • Stretching: expands the image to fill the panel, making objects wider than intended.
  • Center or No scaling: displays the source image at its original size with unused space around it.
  • Native resolution: the monitor’s physical resolution, not simply the highest option shown in VALORANT.

The important trade-off is unavoidable: a narrower image cannot fill a wider panel without adding bars, cropping part of the image, or distorting its proportions. Scaling also does not automatically give VALORANT a wider field of view. It changes how the existing frame fits the monitor; it does not necessarily make the game render more of the map.

  • 1ms MPRT: Colors fade and illuminate instantly with a 1ms response time, eliminating ghosting and piecing together precise imagery during action-packed scenes and gaming.
  • Luminous Backcover Lights: A colorful LED light illuminates the back cover of the monitor, delivering a uniquely modern design.
  • WQHD Resolution: At 5 million pixels, Wide Quad HD Resolution (3440 x 1440) display resolution provides you with the next level of refined, and detailed picture over the current 1080P standard.
  • 21:9 Ultrawide: See more and do more with an ultrawide monitor. 21:9 provides you with 30% more screen space versus the conventional monitor. With an ultrawide resolution of 3440 x 1440, expand your performance and productivity.

Recommended fix: native resolution without distortion

1. Set Windows to the monitor’s native mode

  1. Right-click the Windows desktop and select Display settings.
  2. Select the ultrawide monitor if more than one display is connected.
  3. Set Display resolution to the monitor’s recommended or native resolution.
  4. Choose the highest stable refresh rate supported by the monitor, cable, port, and graphics hardware.
  5. Leave Windows display scaling at its recommended value while troubleshooting.

Windows interface scaling changes the size of text and controls. It is separate from the game’s render resolution and normally does not fix a stretched or cropped VALORANT image. Microsoft explains that games may use their own resolution controls, while some borderless games depend on the Windows display resolution (Microsoft Support).

2. Match the setting in VALORANT

  1. Launch VALORANT and open Settings.
  2. Select Video → General.
  3. Set Display Mode to Fullscreen.
  4. Select the monitor’s native resolution if it is available.
  5. Set the intended refresh rate.
  6. Set Aspect Ratio Method to Letterbox, or to the available aspect-preserving option.
  7. Apply the changes and restart VALORANT.

This is the safest baseline for accurate geometry. If black bars remain, they may be the expected result of preserving the original aspect ratio rather than evidence that the monitor is unsupported.

How to stretch VALORANT across the entire ultrawide display

Use this method only if filling every pixel matters more to you than preserving the shape of on-screen objects. In VALORANT, choose Fill for Aspect Ratio Method where that option is available. Then configure the graphics driver to expand the image.

NVIDIA graphics

  1. Close VALORANT.
  2. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  3. Go to Display → Adjust desktop size and position.
  4. Open the Scaling tab.
  5. Select Full-screen.
  6. Under Perform scaling on, try GPU if display scaling does not apply correctly.
  7. Click Apply.
  8. Reopen VALORANT and select the intended resolution and Fill mode.

NVIDIA defines Aspect ratio as preserving the source proportions, Full-screen as stretching the image to fill the display, and No scaling as centering it. Its terminology and behavior are documented in the NVIDIA Control Panel guide.

AMD Radeon graphics

  1. Close VALORANT.
  2. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  3. Open Settings → Display.
  4. Enable GPU Scaling.
  5. Set Scaling Mode to Full panel.
  6. Apply the setting.
  7. Open VALORANT, select the desired resolution, and choose Fill where available.

AMD’s equivalent choices are Preserve aspect ratio, Full panel, and Center. AMD describes Full panel as expanding a non-native image to fill the display (AMD Support).

Neither Fill nor Full panel creates extra rendered map space. They enlarge the existing frame. Do not assume that stretching improves aim, visibility, hitboxes, field of view, or competitive performance.

If black bars will not disappear

  • Bars on the left and right: the source image is narrower than the monitor. Full-screen or Full panel removes them by stretching.
  • Bars on the top and bottom: check the selected resolution and the monitor’s aspect-ratio mode.
  • Cropped image: return to native resolution and use aspect-preserving scaling.
  • Scaling appears ineffective: temporarily use Center or No scaling, apply it, restart VALORANT, and then reapply the desired mode.
  • Monitor-side scaling is interfering: open the monitor’s on-screen menu and look for Aspect Ratio, Scaling, Wide, Original, or 1:1. Choose Original, Aspect, or 1:1 for correct proportions, or Wide/Full for stretching.

Fullscreen versus Windowed Fullscreen

Fullscreen is the better first choice when VALORANT ignores a non-native resolution or when you need GPU or monitor scaling to control the output. It is also useful for confirming that the game is actually applying the selected display mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windowed Fullscreen is often preferable when Alt+Tab causes flickering, a black screen, crashes, or repeated resolution changes. It can be easier to switch between applications, but its output may follow the Windows desktop resolution more closely and can provide less predictable exclusive-scaling behavior.

If Fullscreen repeatedly reverts, set Windows to the intended resolution, launch VALORANT, choose the matching resolution, apply it, and restart the game. If the problem continues, test Windowed Fullscreen.

Fix Alt+Tab black screens and flickering

  1. Close VALORANT.
  2. Find the VALORANT executable or its shortcut.
  3. Right-click it and select Properties.
  4. Open the Compatibility tab.
  5. Enable Disable fullscreen optimizations.
  6. Select Apply, then relaunch the game.

This is a troubleshooting option, not a required performance tweak. If it makes the display worse, undo the change and use Windowed Fullscreen instead. Riot documents fullscreen-handling problems associated with Alt+Tab and Windows fullscreen behavior in its VALORANT support guidance.

Stop VALORANT from reverting the resolution

  1. Close VALORANT completely, including the Riot Client if necessary.
  2. Set Windows to the monitor’s native or intended resolution.
  3. Set the NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or monitor scaling mode.
  4. Launch VALORANT.
  5. Choose the matching resolution and display mode under Settings → Video → General.
  6. Apply the setting and restart VALORANT.
  7. If it reverts again, test Windowed Fullscreen.
  8. Remove or disable third-party resolution tools and custom display modes.
  9. On a desktop, confirm that the monitor cable is connected to the intended graphics card rather than the motherboard video output.
  10. If the driver control panel will not retain the setting, update or clean-install the graphics driver.

Do not begin by editing configuration files. Such edits and “true stretch” methods can behave differently on NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, and laptop systems, and may stop working after a game update.

Laptop and hybrid-GPU checks

On some laptops, the built-in panel is physically routed through the integrated GPU even when VALORANT renders on the dedicated GPU. In that situation, changing NVIDIA or AMD scaling may appear to do nothing.

  • Check whether the laptop manufacturer provides a MUX switch or Discrete GPU only mode.
  • Look for scaling controls in Intel Graphics Command Center as well as NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software.
  • Test an external monitor connection, because an external DisplayPort or HDMI output may be routed differently.
  • Confirm that the port and cable support the monitor’s selected resolution and refresh rate.

DisplayPort is not universally required. The correct connection depends on the monitor, graphics hardware, cable, refresh rate, and display standard.

Driver, monitor, and cable checks

  • Confirm that Windows detects the correct monitor model.
  • Use the monitor’s recommended resolution before testing custom modes.
  • Check that the selected refresh rate is supported by the current cable and port.
  • Disable monitor-side zoom, overscan, or television-style scaling.
  • Try another DisplayPort or HDMI port.
  • Temporarily remove custom resolutions.
  • Update the graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
  • Restart after changing driver scaling.
  • Test VALORANT at native resolution before experimenting with stretching.

Advanced custom resolutions and “true stretch” methods

Custom resolutions can be useful for experimentation, but they are not the dependable first-line fix. They may cause the game to revert to Windowed Fullscreen, return black bars after a patch, produce different results between GPUs, stretch the interface without stretching the world image, or create an unsupported mode that leaves the display blank.

Third-party projects such as EasyTS are community tools, not Riot-supported VALORANT features. They should not be treated as necessary, risk-free, or guaranteed to work after updates. Riot’s official update feed shows that game behavior can change between patches; for example, Patch 13.02 was listed on July 28, 2026 (VALORANT update feed).
