The “Unable to connect to EA servers” message on PS5 does not necessarily mean your internet is down. Apex or PlayStation Network (PSN) may be unavailable, or the cause may be a stalled game session, an update, your home network, or an account issue. Check service status first, then work through the least disruptive fixes before considering a reinstall.
Check whether Apex Legends or PSN is down
Start with service status before changing console or router settings. EA recommends checking Apex server status when troubleshooting connection errors; PlayStation also advises checking PSN status if online features fail.
- Check EA’s Apex Legends error-code guidance and its server-status information.
- Check the PlayStation Network status page.
- See whether other online games and PSN features work, and ask friends on PS5 whether they see the same error.
Only treat the service as down when an official status page or announcement confirms an incident. Player reports can be a useful clue, but do not establish an outage. If an incident or maintenance is confirmed, wait and try again later; reinstalling or changing DNS will not repair a server-side problem.
Try the quick, low-risk fixes
Fully close and relaunch Apex
- Press the PS button.
- Highlight Apex Legends in the Control Center, press Options, then select Close Game.
- Wait several seconds, then launch Apex again from the game hub or library.
A suspended game can retain a failed connection session even after service has recovered. EA recommends restarting the game for several Apex connection errors. See EA’s Apex troubleshooting guidance.

Restart the PS5
- Press the PS button, select the power icon, then choose Restart PS5.
- After the console starts, confirm that you are signed in to PSN and open Apex.
If the console itself is behaving unusually, choose Turn Off PS5, wait until the power indicator is fully off, then turn it back on. Do not unplug it while it is shutting down.
Test the PS5’s connection
Open Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection. Check the internet connection, PSN sign-in, NAT type, download and upload results, and any error code. PlayStation identifies this as a first-line connectivity check; see its PS5 connection guidance.
A successful test makes a total local internet failure less likely, but does not prove that the console can reach every EA service. If PSN sign-in fails, resolve that connection or account problem before focusing on Apex.
Restart networking equipment and compare connections
Power-cycle the modem and router
- Close Apex and turn off the PS5.
- Turn off the modem and router. If they are separate devices, turn both off.
- Wait at least five minutes, as recommended in PlayStation’s PS5 server-connection guidance.
- Turn the modem back on and wait for it to reconnect. Then turn on the router if it is separate and wait for the network to become available.
- Turn on the PS5, test the connection, and try Apex.
Try Ethernet or another network
Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet if you can. PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible; for Wi-Fi, move the console closer to the router. You can also pause large downloads or streaming and test another Wi-Fi band if your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. PlayStation’s connection guidance covers wired and wireless troubleshooting.

A phone hotspot can be useful as a short diagnostic test, though it may consume mobile data and is not necessarily a good permanent connection. If Apex works on the hotspot but not on your home network, that points toward the home router, ISP path, NAT setup, or DNS rather than the Apex installation. If it fails on both, an account, game, platform, or service issue remains possible.
Check game updates, licenses, and PS5 system software
Check for updates
- Highlight Apex on the PS5 home screen, press Options, and select Check for Update.
- Open Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings, and install any available system update.
- Restart the PS5 after updating, then try Apex again.
A pending Apex update can prevent the client from negotiating correctly with the live service, though it is not the explanation for every connection error. PlayStation’s software and game troubleshooting steps include updating the system and game.
Restore licenses
Go to Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses. This refreshes the console’s license checks; it does not delete Apex progress or reinstall the game. It is worth trying when the game launches but cannot validate content or account-related information. PlayStation lists it among its server-connection error remedies.
Use Safe Mode only if simpler steps fail
PS5 Safe Mode offers cache-clearing and database-rebuilding options. Follow the on-screen labels carefully: neither option is the same as Reset PS5.

Clear the system-software cache
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press and hold the power button; release it after the second beep.
- Connect the DualSense controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database → Clear System Software Cache.
PlayStation describes this as an option for system-feature issues or performance problems, not as a guaranteed Apex fix. See the PS5 Safe Mode guidance.
Rebuild the database
From the same Safe Mode menu, select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database → Rebuild Database. PlayStation describes this as scanning the drive and creating a new database of console content. It is not a factory reset and does not establish that Apex files are corrupted. The process may take time depending on storage; do not turn off the console while it runs. Troubleshoot router restrictions and DNS carefully
Interpret the NAT result
NAT Type 1 indicates an open connection; Type 2 is usually workable on a home router; Type 3 is more restricted and can make multiplayer or matchmaking harder. If the PS5 reports Type 3, first try Ethernet and check whether other multiplayer games work. If your router offers UPnP and you trust its configuration, enabling it may help. Also check for double NAT, such as a second router connected behind an ISP gateway.
Do not start by forwarding ports. The correct settings depend on your router and network, and unnecessary forwarding can create security or configuration problems. If simpler checks point to router restrictions, consult current EA or router-manufacturer instructions rather than applying a generic port list. EA forum troubleshooting has mentioned NAT and connection settings, but it is not a universal configuration guide: EA forum discussion.

Change DNS only as an optional test
DNS changes may help if your ISP’s resolver is failing or slow. They will not fix an EA or PSN outage, packet loss, or an account restriction. On PS5, open Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection, highlight your current network, press Options, choose Advanced Settings → DNS Settings → Manual, and enter the primary and secondary addresses for a reputable provider.
For example, Google’s public DNS addresses are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4; these are examples, not EA-required settings or a guaranteed fix. EA forum guidance has suggested Google DNS, but does not make it an Apex-specific official remedy. See the forum guidance. If the change makes things worse, restore the previous DNS setting.

Verify the account without unlinking it
- Confirm that the PS5 is signed in to the intended PSN account.
- Sign in to EA Help in a browser and check whether the EA account needs verification or shows an account notice.
- If the EA/PSN association appears incorrect, contact EA Support before unlinking anything.
A connection message by itself does not prove that an account is banned. Unlinking can have account-specific consequences, so it is not a routine troubleshooting step.
Use the English (United Kingdom) workaround only for the relevant error
EA documents changing the console language to English (United Kingdom) as a temporary workaround for a particular PlayStation “Unable to connect” error. It is not a general fix for every version of this message. If that documented error applies, note your original language, change the PS5 language to English (United Kingdom), restart Apex, and test. If it works, restore your preferred language afterward. See EA’s error-code page.

Reinstall Apex only after the other checks
Reinstalling takes time and bandwidth, so first rule out an outage and try the less disruptive steps. PlayStation includes deletion and reinstallation among later game troubleshooting options: software and game troubleshooting.
- Confirm that the PS5 has enough storage and a stable connection for a potentially large download.
- Highlight Apex Legends, press Options, and select Delete.
- Reinstall the game from Game Library, sign in to the intended account, then test the connection.
Account-linked progress is expected to return when you use the correct account, but a local reinstall cannot resolve an account-association problem. If you are unsure about your account link, ask EA Support before making account changes.
When to contact EA or PlayStation Support
Stop repeating local fixes and escalate if other online games work but Apex has failed for days, only one account is affected, you see an account or authentication notice, Apex fails on both home internet and a separate hotspot, or the problem persists after updates, restarts, cache clearing, license restoration, and reinstalling. Contact EA for Apex or EA-account issues and PlayStation for PSN or console issues. PlayStation recommends providing the error message, a detailed description, reproduction steps, and the time of the attempt; see its game troubleshooting support guidance.
Before contacting support, record the exact error text and code, date and time with time zone, PS5 system-software and Apex versions, NAT type, whether Ethernet or a hotspot changed the result, and whether other online games work. This makes it easier to distinguish an account or game issue from a broader connection failure.
