How to Fix “Unable to Update the Minecraft Native Launcher” in Windows

If Minecraft Launcher shows “Unable to Update the Minecraft Native Launcher,” first close it and update Minecraft Launcher from Microsoft Store → Library. If that does not work, check that the Microsoft account with your Minecraft license is signed in across the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app; then try the official alternate install routes or reinstall the Launcher. Minecraft’s help pages give these as general troubleshooting steps, not a confirmed cause or guaranteed fix for this exact message.

1. Update Minecraft Launcher from Microsoft Store

1. Close Minecraft Launcher.

2. Open Microsoft Store and select Library.

3. Check for updates and install the Minecraft Launcher update if it appears.

Minecraft says the Launcher should update automatically when started and directs Windows users to the Store Library if it does not: Minecraft’s Windows download page.

2. Make sure the same licensed Microsoft account is signed in

Check the account shown in Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, and the Xbox app. Use the Microsoft account that owns the Minecraft license. Minecraft Help says these services work together to validate the license and provide access to features, so mismatched accounts can interfere with access: Troubleshooting Minecraft Launcher Issues.

3. If Store installation is failing, try another official route

Install through the Xbox app

Minecraft Help recommends downloading the Xbox app, signing in to the Xbox account, searching for Minecraft Launcher, and selecting Get or Install.

Use the Minecraft.net download

You can also download the Launcher from Minecraft’s Windows download page. Minecraft Help notes that this installer still requires a Microsoft Store login, so confirm the intended account is signed in there. See Troubleshooting Installing the Minecraft Launcher for these alternate routes.

This is a documented Store troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for every Launcher update failure. The steps are described in Minecraft Help’s Launcher installation guide.

5. Reinstall Minecraft Launcher if it still fails

Minecraft Help recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the Launcher so necessary files are installed afresh. Reinstall through Microsoft Store or Minecraft’s official download page: Troubleshooting Minecraft Launcher Issues. Avoid deleting the .minecraft game-data folder as a first troubleshooting step; the official guidance cited here does not instruct users to remove it for this error.
