How to Fix UnlockTool “Server Not Found” and Error 404 on Windows

By VGSources Team 9 min read

UnlockTool’s “Server Not Found” and HTTP 404 messages are different failures. “Server Not Found” normally means your browser could not reach a usable server response, often because of DNS, routing, a proxy, a firewall, or an unavailable service. A 404 means a server did answer, but the requested URL path or file was not found. Fix the endpoint and connection first, then check the Windows build, firewall rules, account, drivers, cable, and phone connection.

Work through the sequence below without repeatedly refreshing the same address. An old bookmark, a moved download path, an unofficial repack, or a blocked application can each produce a similar-looking UnlockTool failure.

What the two messages actually mean

“Server Not Found”

A browser displays this before it has a usable HTTP response. The request may have failed because the domain has no usable DNS record, the DNS value is wrong, the routed resource is unavailable, or a local router, firewall, proxy, or connection is blocking access. Mozilla Support recommends trying another browser to separate a browser problem from a wider network problem. If no browser can load sites, the failure is not specific to that browser.

HTTP 404

A 404 is an HTTP response from a server. The server received the request but could not find the requested resource. Common causes include a mistyped URL, a broken link, a moved or deleted file, or a failed mapping between the URL and the file or application route. Refreshing the same obsolete path will not restore a resource that has moved.

What you see Layer being tested Most useful first action
Browser says “Server Not Found” DNS, routing, proxy, firewall, or service availability Try another browser, then test the network and DNS
A page returns “404 Not Found” URL spelling, host, path, or server-side mapping Check the complete address and use the current official endpoint
UnlockTool opens but says “Server connection failed” Application firewall or proxy access Allow the genuine installation through the relevant network control
UnlockTool logs in but cannot see a phone Drivers, USB port, cable, or device mode Install the required drivers and test a direct USB 2.0 connection

A 404 by itself is not proof that Windows is infected or that your phone is damaged. It is a statement about the requested web resource. Treat an unexpected installer or a modified build as a separate trust and compatibility problem.

Before changing settings

  • Copy the exact message, including whether it says “Server Not Found,” “404,” “Server connection failed,” login rejection, or device not detected.
  • Record where it appears: a browser page, the UnlockTool sign-in screen, or the device panel after the program starts.
  • Keep the complete address visible. Note the spelling, http versus https, host name, and every path segment.
  • Close duplicate UnlockTool windows and pause repeated retries while you identify the failing layer.
  • If this is a work or school PC, note whether a managed proxy or firewall is enforced; you may need its administrator to approve the connection.

Fix the error in the right order

1. Confirm the endpoint and remove stale bookmarks

Read the address character by character. Check the host name, spelling, protocol, capitalization where relevant, and the path after the first slash. An old bookmark or mirror can point to a route that no longer exists. A 404 on that route is corrected by opening the current official UnlockTool endpoint, not by refreshing the old one.

  1. Open a new tab and type or paste the address again instead of selecting an old autocomplete entry.
  2. Compare the address with the current official UnlockTool download or sign-in route. Do not substitute a search result, file-sharing mirror, or repacked installer.
  3. Remove the obsolete bookmark only after you have copied the exact error for your records.
  4. If the official route itself returns 404 in every browser, stop changing local files; the path or server-side mapping needs to be corrected by the service.

Do not download a replacement executable or DLL from a page that appeared only because the original path failed. A 404 does not make an unknown download trustworthy.

2. Isolate the browser

Use a second installed browser, then try a private or InPrivate window. This comparison is useful because a single browser can retain stale cookies, cached redirects, extensions, or proxy settings.

  1. Open the same endpoint in another browser.
  2. If it works there, return to the failing browser and open a private window.
  3. Disable extensions that alter traffic, authentication, or content filtering, then retry.
  4. Clear that browser’s cookies and cached files for the affected site, restart it, and test again.
  5. Inspect the browser’s proxy setting. A proxy configured only in one browser can make that browser fail while other applications continue to work.

If both browsers fail in the same way, the issue is unlikely to be a browser cache problem. Continue with the connection checks.

3. Check the connection, DNS, proxy, and firewall

When every browser fails, confirm that the PC is online and that ordinary websites load. Restart the router only if other devices also show a connection problem; otherwise, focus on the affected Windows PC and its network controls.

  1. Verify that Windows shows an active Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection and that another ordinary site opens.
  2. Temporarily test a different network, such as a trusted phone hotspot, if policy allows. A working result on the second network points toward the original router, DNS service, proxy, or filtering policy.
  3. Check the configured DNS server and the domain’s DNS result. A missing record, incorrect target, or unavailable routed resource can prevent the name from reaching the expected service.
  4. Review Windows proxy settings under Settings > Network & internet > Proxy. Turn off an unintended manual proxy; keep an organization-required proxy in place and ask its administrator for the correct allow-list entry.
  5. Review Windows Security > Firewall & network protection. Do not disable the firewall as a blanket test. Instead, identify whether it is blocking the browser or the genuine UnlockTool installation and create a narrow allow rule only when you know the file is authentic.

If the endpoint works on another network but not your normal one, give the network administrator the domain, time, and exact error. If it fails on every network and every browser, an unavailable service or incorrect endpoint becomes more likely than a local DNS cache.

4. Install the official Windows build

UnlockTool’s documented workflow is Windows-focused. Use the current official download route and install the unmodified build. Modified or repacked packages can fail authentication and can introduce separate device-servicing risks, so replacing a 404 page with a third-party package is not a fix.

  1. Uninstall or quarantine an installer whose source and integrity you cannot verify.
  2. Download the Windows build only from the official UnlockTool route.
  3. Install it normally, then record the displayed build or version number.
  4. Sign in with the account that holds the required, active license. Do not attempt to bypass an account or licensing check.
  5. If the official build still reports a connection failure, keep the exact build number and message for support rather than trying several repacks.

5. Allow UnlockTool through network controls

“Server connection failed” can result when Windows Firewall, endpoint security, or a proxy blocks the application even though a browser can load websites. The goal is an explicit exception for the genuine installation, not a permanently disabled security layer.

  1. Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
  2. Select Change settings, locate the genuine UnlockTool executable, and allow it only on the network profiles your policy permits.
  3. If it is not listed, use an administrator-approved rule for the exact executable path. Avoid broad rules for an entire drive or an unknown temporary file.
  4. Check any separate corporate proxy, web filter, or endpoint-control console. A local allow rule cannot override a network proxy that denies the domain.
  5. Restart UnlockTool and test the sign-in or server operation once.

Remove a temporary exception if it does not resolve the failure or if the installation is later replaced. Keep a note of the rule so it can be audited.

6. Prepare the USB and driver path

If the program opens and authentication succeeds but the phone is not detected, stop treating it as a 404. The documented UnlockTool workflow calls for the relevant USB, VCOM, and Qualcomm 9000-class drivers, a direct USB 2.0 connection, and a reliable data cable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the required USB, VCOM, and Qualcomm 9000-class drivers for the device workflow you are using.
  2. Restart Windows if the driver installer requests it.
  3. Connect the phone directly to a USB 2.0 port on the PC. Avoid hubs, front-panel extensions, and adapters while diagnosing detection.
  4. Use a known-good data cable, not a cable that only supplies power.
  5. Reconnect the phone and watch for a new device in Device Manager. If it appears briefly and disappears, test the other direct USB 2.0 port and then the known-good cable.

Do not install random driver packs offered by an unrelated download page. A driver problem should be solved with the official driver set associated with the tool and device workflow.

7. Separate login, server, and device failures

UnlockTool can reach its interface while still failing at a later stage. Identify exactly where the process stops.

  • Login rejected: verify the account identity, subscription or license status, and the authenticity of the installed build. A successful browser connection does not prove that the application account is authorized.
  • “Server connection failed” before login: return to the firewall, proxy, DNS, and endpoint checks. Capture the exact text and build number.
  • Login succeeds but no device appears: work through drivers, direct USB 2.0 port, and known-good data cable. The error is now in the device path, not the web address.
  • Device appears but an operation fails: do not infer that a repeated 404 retry will help. Preserve the operation name, device model, connection mode, and any separate error shown by the tool.

Use this decision table after each test

Test result What it rules out Next move
Endpoint works in another browser The service and network are reachable Clear the original browser’s site data, extensions, and proxy setting
All browsers fail, but another network works The UnlockTool URL is less likely to be the only problem Check the original router, DNS, proxy, or firewall policy
Every browser returns the same 404 A browser-only cache issue Correct the host/path or use the current official endpoint
Browser works, application fails Basic web access alone Allow the genuine application and check its proxy and build
Application logs in, phone absent Account authentication Install drivers and test direct USB 2.0 and another data cable
Phone appears after a cable or port change The original cable or port Retire the unreliable cable or port from this workflow

When to stop troubleshooting locally

Escalate with useful evidence when the official endpoint returns 404 in every browser and network, when the official build cannot authenticate despite a valid account, or when the service works for other users but not through a managed network. Include the exact URL path, timestamp, browser and UnlockTool build, network used, account or license status, and whether the phone is detected. Do not send passwords, license keys, or unrelated personal files.

If the failure is device-specific, include the phone model, the driver names installed, the USB port type, cable result, and whether Device Manager shows the device. This lets support distinguish a missing server route from a driver or physical-connection problem.

Common mistakes that prolong a 404 or connection failure

  • Refreshing an obsolete bookmark instead of checking the complete endpoint.
  • Assuming a browser 404 and an application “Server connection failed” message are the same layer.
  • Testing only one browser and concluding that the whole internet connection is down.
  • Disabling the firewall completely instead of allowing the verified executable narrowly.
  • Installing a modified or repacked build after an official download path fails.
  • Using a USB hub, charge-only cable, or unverified driver pack while diagnosing device detection.
  • Changing drivers when the actual problem is an account or license rejection, or changing network settings when the phone is already authenticated but not detected.
