A recognized Joy-Con 2 that still fails Nintendo’s tests or remains faulty after these checks needs service.
First, identify the controller and when the problem happens
This guide covers Joy-Con 2 controllers, which Nintendo says are compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2. Note whether the symptom occurs while the Joy-Con 2 is attached, wirelessly, or only in one game. Nintendo has separate troubleshooting guidance for buttons, sticks, wireless response, and controller recognition, so a connection or recognition issue is not necessarily drift or a button fault. If buttons are sticky or do not respond
Clean a sticky button safely
- Power off the console.
- Gently brush around the affected button with a soft, dry toothbrush. Do not use cleaners or fluids for this cleaning step; Nintendo specifically warns against them.
- Power the console back on and check for a system update.
If the button feels physically stuck but still registers, cleaning is the first step. If it does not register, continue with the mapping and button test checks below. Nintendo’s attached Joy-Con 2 button guidance
Check whether the button was remapped
If the console displays a message that the connected controller’s button mapping changed, choose the option in that prompt to reset the mapping. A remapped input can make a working button seem broken.

- Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Test Input Devices > Test Controller Buttons.
- Press the affected button and see whether its icon registers.
This test does not cover HOME, Capture, C, POWER, volume, or SYNC. If a supported button on a recognized, attached Joy-Con 2 does not register, Nintendo says the Joy-Con 2 needs service; for this issue, its US and Canada guidance says to send the affected controller, not the console. Rule out a game-specific control
If the button works in the console test but not in one game or app, check that software’s instructions. The input may not be supported there, or the game may use a different control scheme.
If the stick drifts or responds incorrectly
Check mapping and install updates
- Look for a wrench icon beside the active controller, which indicates that its inputs have been remapped. Reset the mapping if needed.
- Check that the console has the latest system update.
- With the controller powered on, go to System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. If a controller update stops before it finishes, Nintendo advises trying the update again.
Remove covers and calibrate
- Remove any skins or covers from the affected controller and stick.
- Open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Calibrate Control Sticks.
- Follow the on-screen test and calibration prompts for the affected stick.

Check whether only one game is affected
Update the game and check its electronic manual and control settings. In Mario Kart World, for example, activated tilt controls can make stick behavior seem incorrect. A symptom limited to one game is a reason to check that game’s settings before concluding the controller is faulty. Nintendo’s stick troubleshooting guidance

- Power off the console.
- Gently brush around the stick with a clean, dry toothbrush, then wipe away debris with a soft, dry cloth.
- Power on the console. Calibrate the stick only if it still has a problem; Nintendo advises against calibrating when there is no issue.

When to contact Nintendo or consider replacement
Contact Nintendo or your regional authorized service center if a recognized Joy-Con 2 still fails the button test, cannot be calibrated, or responds incorrectly after the checks above. Nintendo’s US and Canada instructions for the listed button and stick faults say to send the affected Joy-Con 2, not the console; outside those countries, Nintendo directs users to the nearest authorized service center. Confirm local eligibility, warranty coverage, repair cost, and process with Nintendo, as these details vary by region and are not specified in the cited troubleshooting pages.
