How to Fix USB Ports That Stop Working After Upgrading to Windows 10

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your USB ports stopped detecting devices immediately after a Windows 10 upgrade, first remove docks and other USB hardware, restart, and test one known-good device directly in several ports. Then use Device Manager to capture the exact error code before reinstalling drivers. The code tells you whether Windows has disabled the device, lost its driver, exhausted firmware resources, or needs vendor-level repair.

Work through the checks below in order. They start with reversible tests and progress to chipset-driver replacement, power and hub checks, and finally BIOS, firmware, or physical-hardware escalation.

Why a Windows 10 upgrade can leave USB ports unusable

An upgrade can change the driver package that Windows uses for the USB host controller or for a connected device. Microsoft documents a Windows 10 update scenario in which custom or third-party USB device drivers are removed unexpectedly. A controller can therefore appear with a missing or mismatched driver even though the ports worked before the upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Driver replacement is only one possibility. A controller may be disabled or in an error state, a hub or dock may be incompatible, several devices may exceed the available power, or the computer may have a BIOS, firmware, or physical-port problem. The most useful evidence is how a known-good device behaves when connected directly and what Device Manager reports.

Start with reversible tests

Disconnect docks and nonessential devices

Shut down or unplug every USB accessory you do not need for testing. Remove docks, external hubs, storage devices, phones, printers, game controllers, and other peripherals. A dock can introduce its own controller and power requirements, masking a problem in the computer’s built-in ports.

Restart with only one test device attached

Restart Windows 10 with the dock and nonessential accessories disconnected. After the sign-in screen appears, connect one known-good mouse, keyboard, or flash drive directly to the computer. Do not use a hub for this first test. If the device works, repeat the test with another built-in port.

Compare ports and computers

  • Try the same device in several ports on the affected computer.
  • If the computer has both USB-A and USB-C connectors, test the connector type that matches the device or its cable.
  • Test the device on another computer if one is available. Failure on both computers points toward the accessory, cable, or enclosure rather than Windows.
  • If one port works while another does not, record that pattern. A single damaged connector is a different problem from a controller that fails every port.

These comparisons separate a failed accessory or hub from a Windows-wide controller problem before you make driver changes. Record whether the device is merely absent, repeatedly disconnects, or shows an error as soon as it is plugged in. That behavior is useful when you later compare a direct connection with a dock connection.

Read the Device Manager error before changing drivers

Open the affected device entry

  1. Open Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Also inspect the category for the affected hardware, such as Keyboards, Mice and other pointing devices, Disk drives, or Imaging devices.
  3. Look for a yellow exclamation mark. Microsoft uses that mark to identify a device that needs attention.
  4. Right-click the entry, choose Properties, and read Device status on the General tab.
  5. Write down the complete code and message before uninstalling or updating anything. If several entries have warnings, record each one separately.

The code determines whether the next action is enabling the device, rebuilding its driver entry, or checking firmware resources. Do not assume that every warning means the physical port is broken.

Use the code to choose the next action

Device Manager code Meaning Next manual action
22 The device is disabled. In Device Manager, choose Action > Enable Device, then test the port again.
18, 19, 28, 31, 37, 39, or 43 Windows needs the device driver updated or reinstalled. Update the driver first. If the error remains, uninstall the device, use Action > Scan for hardware changes, and restart.
29 Firmware did not provide the required resources. Check the computer maker’s BIOS or firmware documentation and updates.
33 BIOS resource information may be inadequate. Review BIOS updates and hardware-repair guidance from the computer manufacturer.

Codes can be displayed on either the host controller or the individual USB device. Use the entry that actually carries the warning; reinstalling a keyboard driver will not repair a controller that is reporting a firmware-resource error.

Repair the USB and chipset drivers

Try Windows’ driver update first

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected USB controller or device.
  2. Select Update driver.
  3. Use the available Windows search option and let the process finish.
  4. Restart the computer even if Windows reports that the best driver is already installed.
  5. Reconnect the known-good device directly and check Device Manager again.

An upgrade can leave a generic entry in place while the computer maker’s chipset package is still missing. If Windows Update cannot provide a working package, obtain the latest Windows 10 chipset and USB-controller drivers from the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page. Match the package to the exact model and Windows 10 edition listed for that computer.

Download drivers only for the precise computer or motherboard model. A package for a similar model can install the wrong controller support. Keep the downloaded installer and note its version so you can identify which change restored (or failed to restore) USB operation. Install the chipset package as directed by the manufacturer, then install any separate USB-controller package it lists.

Uninstall and rebuild an error-state entry

  1. Return to Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  2. Right-click the controller or affected device that still shows the error and choose Uninstall device.
  3. Confirm the removal. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove a driver package, note the wording and avoid removing a package that belongs to a different working device unless the manufacturer’s instructions call for it.
  4. At the top of Device Manager, choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. Windows should rediscover the controller and create a fresh device entry.
  5. Restart Windows and inspect Device status again.

Microsoft repeatedly recommends uninstalling the device, scanning for hardware changes, and restarting for the affected error codes. If the same code returns after a clean rebuild and the manufacturer’s driver is installed, move to the power and firmware checks instead of repeating the uninstall cycle.

When all USB input devices are unavailable

If every USB port is dead, a USB mouse or keyboard may not let you navigate Device Manager. Use the computer’s built-in keyboard or touchpad if available, connect only one known-good input device during testing, or make driver changes from Windows before reconnecting other accessories. Avoid adding a hub merely to regain input until you know that the host controller itself is working.

Check power limits and hub or dock compatibility

Recognize a power-related symptom

Microsoft warns that a PC might not provide enough power to a USB device. Power is a plausible cause when a device disconnects under load, works alone but fails when several devices are attached, or works after the computer is connected to AC power. A bus-powered hard drive, camera, or other high-draw accessory is more likely to expose this limit than a basic mouse.

  1. Connect the laptop or tablet to its AC adapter.
  2. Disconnect unused USB devices and test the target device by itself.
  3. If the device supports its own power adapter, connect that adapter and retest.
  4. For a USB-C device, confirm that the cable and port support the device’s required USB generation and power mode.

Decide whether a powered hub is appropriate

A powered USB hub can supply additional power when several compatible devices exceed the computer’s available budget. Choose one with connectors that match your devices, and verify USB-A or USB-C compatibility and USB 2 or USB 3 support. Connect the hub’s own power supply before attaching the peripherals.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A hub is a power and expansion solution, not a repair for a disabled or failed host controller. If a directly connected, low-power mouse fails in every port and Device Manager shows an error, adding a hub will not correct that controller problem. Disconnect the hub again when checking whether the computer’s built-in ports work.

Use the hub only after the direct test establishes that the computer can recognize USB devices. A powered hub may solve a multi-device power budget problem, but it cannot add an unsupported USB mode, correct a damaged connector, or supply a missing chipset driver. Check the hub’s power rating and connector arrangement against every device you intend to attach; compatibility is determined by the entire path, including the computer port and cable.

Check the dock path

External docks can be the wrong equipment for a particular USB-C port or can have an incompatible firmware and power combination. Test the device directly on the computer first. If direct connection works but the dock does not, consult the dock and computer manufacturer’s compatibility and firmware instructions rather than changing the Windows USB controller repeatedly.

Investigate BIOS, firmware, and hardware faults

When firmware is the likely cause

Code 29 means firmware did not provide required resources, while code 33 indicates that BIOS resource information may be inadequate. The same conclusion becomes more likely when the controller is absent from Device Manager, returns the same error after a clean driver reinstall, or behaves differently in firmware setup than it does in Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact computer or motherboard model and current BIOS version.
  2. Read the manufacturer’s release notes for BIOS, chipset, and USB-firmware updates that support your Windows 10 edition.
  3. Connect AC power and follow the manufacturer’s update procedure exactly. Do not interrupt a BIOS update.
  4. After the update, load Windows, check Device Manager, and repeat the direct known-good-device test.

BIOS menus and update names vary by manufacturer. Use the vendor’s documentation for the model rather than applying a package intended for a similar-looking system.

Signs of a physical port or controller fault

  • The port is loose, bent, visibly damaged, or has debris that prevents a solid connection.
  • No USB controller appears in Device Manager even after a hardware scan and restart.
  • Every port fails with multiple known-good devices, while the same devices work elsewhere.
  • The controller repeatedly returns an error after the correct chipset and USB drivers are installed.
  • The ports work in firmware setup or another operating environment but not in Windows, or fail in both places.

Do not force a connector, probe inside a port, or keep reconnecting a device that becomes unusually hot. Document the port pattern, Device Manager code, driver version, and results on another computer before contacting the manufacturer.

A decision path for the remaining cases

If one device fails but other USB devices work

Test that device with another cable and computer, if possible. A failure that follows the device indicates the accessory, cable, or its own driver. A failure limited to one Windows installation points back to the device entry and its driver; use the update and uninstall-and-scan procedure for that entry.

If every device fails but Device Manager shows code 22

Enable the disabled device with Action > Enable Device, restart, and retest directly. If Windows disables it again, record the new status and continue with the manufacturer’s chipset and USB-driver package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If every device fails with codes 18, 19, 28, 31, 37, 39, or 43

Install the correct chipset and USB-controller driver, then uninstall the affected entry, scan for hardware changes, and restart. A persistent code after those steps is evidence for firmware or hardware escalation, not a reason to buy a hub solely as a driver fix.

If devices work only with external power

Keep the computer on AC power during use, power the device separately when supported, and consider a powered hub for a multi-device setup. Confirm connector and USB-generation compatibility before purchase. Continue to test at least one low-power device directly so you know whether the host controller is healthy.

If the controller is missing or firmware codes persist

Stop cycling through Windows driver installs. Apply the manufacturer’s BIOS, chipset, and firmware guidance and contact the manufacturer for configuration, repair, or replacement. Provide the exact Device Manager code and every test result.

How to document the fault for support

Support staff can act faster when the symptom is reproducible. List the computer’s exact model, Windows 10 edition, BIOS version, affected port type, and the device and cable used for testing. Include which ports worked, whether the same accessory worked on another computer, whether AC power changed the result, and the complete Device Manager code and message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save the driver and firmware version numbers and note the order of changes: direct test, Windows driver update, uninstall and hardware scan, and any BIOS or chipset update. This prevents repeating an unsuccessful step and helps the manufacturer distinguish a Windows configuration issue from a controller or port replacement.

Windows 10 support status and what it changes

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The operating system can still run, and the driver procedures above remain available, but new upgrade-related compatibility fixes should not be expected through normal Windows support.

If the computer supports it, moving to Windows 11 is the longer-term support path. Check the manufacturer’s Windows 11 compatibility information before upgrading again, and keep a record of the working chipset, USB, and BIOS versions so you can restore a known-good configuration if a future change affects the ports.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its 2-day free trial requires no credit card before a subscription. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash or a physically failed USB controller.

What does Device Manager Code 22 mean for a USB port?

Code 22 means Windows has disabled the device. In Device Manager choose Action > Enable Device, restart, and test a known-good device directly. If it becomes disabled again, install the computer maker’s chipset and USB-controller drivers.

Should I buy a powered USB hub?

Only when the symptoms indicate a power limit, such as devices working individually or on AC power but failing when several are connected. Verify USB-A or USB-C connectors, USB 2 or USB 3 support, cable requirements, and the hub’s external power supply. A hub cannot repair a disabled, missing, or failed host controller.

Why does a USB device work directly but not through my dock?

The dock may use an incompatible USB-C path, firmware, connector mode, or power arrangement. Keep the device connected directly while testing Windows, then check the dock and computer manufacturers’ compatibility and firmware instructions.

What if every USB port fails and no controller appears in Device Manager?

After a restart and hardware scan, install the manufacturer’s BIOS, chipset, and firmware updates for the exact computer model. If the controller remains absent or multiple known-good devices fail, contact the manufacturer for configuration, repair, or replacement.

Can reinstalling a driver fix a USB port that is physically damaged?

No. Driver repair addresses missing or mismatched software and the error codes that Microsoft associates with reinstalling. A loose, bent, visibly damaged connector or a controller that fails in every environment requires hardware service.

Does Windows 10 still receive free USB fixes?

Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 can continue running, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. Check whether the computer supports Windows 11 for a longer-term supported platform.

The Bottom Line

Start with one known-good device connected directly to a built-in port, then record Device Manager’s exact code. Update the matching chipset and USB drivers, uninstall and rescan an error-state entry, and restart. Use AC power or a powered hub only when testing demonstrates a power limit. Persistent codes, a missing controller, BIOS-resource errors, or damaged connectors call for the computer manufacturer’s firmware guidance or hardware service.
