If V-Sync makes your controls feel delayed or your game stutters, compare settings in the affected game before changing hardware. V-Sync can reduce screen tearing, but conventional V-Sync may add perceived input delay and stutter when frame rate drops below the display’s refresh rate. The right fix depends on whether you prioritize responsiveness, tear-free motion, or a balance of both.
Why V-Sync can cause input lag or stuttering
Input lag: smoother frames can mean more waiting
V-Sync coordinates frame presentation with the display’s refresh cycle to reduce tearing. That coordination can introduce backpressure: the game or graphics pipeline may have to wait before presenting a frame, making controls feel less immediate. NVIDIA identifies V-Sync backpressure as a source of latency and recommends turning V-Sync off when lower latency matters more than avoiding tearing. The effect varies by game and system; there is no single input-lag figure that applies to every setup. NVIDIA’s system-latency guide explains the trade-off.
Stutter: frame rate falls below the refresh rate
With conventional V-Sync, a game that cannot maintain the display’s refresh rate may present frames less evenly, which can look like stutter. NVIDIA illustrates the behavior with a 60 Hz display where frame rate may fall to a lower level such as 45 or 30 fps. Those are examples from NVIDIA’s explanation, not guaranteed thresholds for every game, display, or synchronization method. NVIDIA Adaptive VSync describes its approach as dynamically turning V-Sync on and off to maintain a more stable frame rate.
Compare these fixes in the affected game
Use the same scene or repeatable action for each comparison, and change one setting at a time. A frame-rate overlay can help establish whether performance is consistently above, near, or below the display’s refresh rate.

| Setting to try | When it may help | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| V-Sync off | Controls feel delayed and responsiveness is the priority. | May reduce V-Sync-related waiting, but screen tearing can return. NVIDIA latency guidance. |
| G-SYNC or FreeSync (VRR) | The display and GPU support a compatible variable-refresh configuration. | Requires compatible hardware and setup; behavior depends on the supported operating range and connection. NVIDIA G-SYNC documentation; AMD FreeSync. |
| Frame-rate cap, with an appropriate sync path | Game frame rate regularly exceeds the display’s refresh rate, or you want a steadier target. | The useful cap depends on the display, game, and sync method; compare responsiveness and motion in your own setup. AMD FreeSync guidance; NVIDIA latency guidance. |
| In-game NVIDIA Reflex | The game supports Reflex and reducing PC latency is a priority. | Only available in supported games. NVIDIA says Reflex is more effective than driver Ultra Low Latency and overrides that mode when both are enabled. NVIDIA latency guidance. |
Step-by-step troubleshooting
- Record a baseline. In the affected game, note whether V-Sync is on, how the controls feel, and whether tearing or stutter appears in a repeatable scene. Keep other graphics settings unchanged while testing.
- Test V-Sync off. If input response improves and you can accept tearing, this may be the simplest no-cost change. If the game instead looks worse or stutters, restore the prior setting and continue comparing.
- Check frame rate against refresh rate. Confirm the display’s selected refresh rate in its settings and your operating system, then compare it with in-game FPS. If FPS regularly falls below the refresh rate, lower demanding game settings or choose a sync method suited to the performance range rather than assuming V-Sync alone will solve it.
- Enable VRR if both ends support it. Check the monitor’s on-screen settings for its variable-refresh feature, then enable the matching option in the graphics software. AMD’s setup instructions recommend enabling FreeSync both on the monitor and in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition: AMD FreeSync setup instructions. For NVIDIA, consult the current G-SYNC documentation for supported configuration details.
- Try an FPS cap when frames exceed refresh. AMD recommends V-Sync or a frame-rate cap for tear-free presentation when game FPS regularly exceeds display refresh. NVIDIA’s low-latency G-SYNC guidance describes V-Sync with Reflex or Ultra Low Latency and an automatic cap below refresh; it notes this can have slightly higher latency than uncapped FPS with Reflex. The available controls and results vary by game and driver, so compare rather than assuming one cap is universally best.
- Use Reflex only when the game offers it. Enable its in-game latency control and test it against the prior configuration. If Reflex is active, NVIDIA says it takes precedence over the driver’s Ultra Low Latency mode.
- Check per-game overrides and presentation mode. If results do not match the settings you selected, review both the game’s graphics menu and any per-game graphics-driver profile. Compare fullscreen and windowed or borderless modes as separate tests; support and behavior can vary by game and system.
How to choose between V-Sync, VRR, and a cap
Choose V-Sync off for responsiveness
This is a reasonable first comparison for a competitive game when delayed controls are more bothersome than tearing. It is a trade-off, not a universal fix: turning V-Sync off does not guarantee smooth motion if frame delivery is unstable.
Choose VRR for a compatible display and GPU
G-SYNC and FreeSync are variable-refresh approaches that let a compatible display adapt refresh behavior to GPU frame rate, which can reduce tearing and stutter within supported operating conditions. Confirm that the monitor, GPU, connection, and settings support the intended configuration. AMD’s product page describes FreeSync as synchronizing display refresh with compatible graphics-card frame rate and currently reports more than 4,000 certified displays; that ecosystem count is a dynamic AMD-published figure, not an independently verified count. Choose a cap when frame rate outruns refresh
A cap can prevent a game from rendering far above the display’s refresh rate and may support a steadier presentation, especially when paired with a sync path. No single cap value suits every refresh rate, VRR range, or game. Compare the available in-game and driver controls while watching both frame pacing and input response.

- Confirm the display is actually set to its intended refresh rate, not a lower default.
- Check whether FPS fluctuates or falls below refresh in the same scene; unstable game performance can remain visible regardless of sync choice.
- Verify VRR support for the exact monitor, GPU, and connection, and make sure it is enabled in both display and software settings where required.
- Compare fullscreen and windowed or borderless presentation, and remove conflicting per-game overrides while testing.
- Do not assume a V-Sync symptom means a component is defective. The documented fixes center on synchronization and performance settings; the cited platform guidance does not establish hardware failure as the general cause.
A VRR monitor is an optional upgrade only if the current display lacks an appropriate compatible feature. Check the specific model’s specifications and compatibility with your GPU before buying; no particular monitor model is established as the right choice for every player.
