The message “Sorry, we’re having trouble signing you in right now. Please try again later” does not identify a single cause, so there is no guaranteed fix. Check your connection first, then test without a proxy or VPN if you use one. If the problem continues or Riot account sign-in also fails, use Riot’s recovery or support options rather than assuming your PC or DNS is at fault.
What the sign-in error tells you
The wording is too general to distinguish a local connection problem from a Riot service disruption, a client issue, or an account-access problem. It does not prove that your DNS, firewall, account, or computer is responsible.
Riot’s network troubleshooting guide covers general connection checks, but does not define this exact message. A January 2026 player discussion includes the same wording and varied suggestions, such as waiting or closing Riot Client; those are individual reports, not confirmed diagnoses or universal fixes.
Try the least disruptive connection checks first
- Confirm the connection. Check that your device is online, the Wi-Fi network and password are correct, and any Ethernet cable is firmly connected. If you currently use Wi-Fi and can test over a wired connection, try it; Riot recommends wired access when Wi-Fi is troublesome. Ethernet is an optional test, not a required purchase or guaranteed solution.
- Temporarily test without a proxy or VPN. If you use one and control the connection, disconnect it briefly and try signing in again, provided doing so is safe on your network. Riot lists proxies and VPNs as possible sources of connection problems. This test does not mean a VPN is required, and changing regions is not a demonstrated fix.
Use advanced network changes only if basic checks fail
Riot’s general guide also discusses public DNS, renewing your IP address, flushing the DNS cache, firewall configuration, and port forwarding for some router-related problems. These options apply only if they address the actual network issue; the error message itself is not evidence that any one of them will help.

- DNS and IP settings: Changing DNS or renewing an IP can affect connectivity, and DNS changes may disrupt access with some providers. Riot advises restoring your original settings if access is lost.
- Firewall settings: Check that the relevant connection is not being blocked, but do not broadly disable your firewall or security software.
- Router ports: Port forwarding is a more involved router change and is not a first step for an undiagnosed sign-in error.
When to check Riot or recover your account
If the basic checks do not help, check Riot’s current service-status page for a reported disruption; outage status can change, and no live status is established here. If the issue persists, Riot’s network guide directs players to submit a support request.
If Riot web sign-in also fails, or you see signs that someone else may have accessed your account, use the Riot Support account recovery and forgotten username/password resources. Do not share your password or other secret credentials with anyone offering to fix the error. Reinstalling the game is not a useful first response to a possible account or service-side problem.
