A Minecraft version mismatch means the client and server are not speaking the same network protocol. “Outdated server!” generally means your game is newer than the server; “Outdated client!” generally means your game is older than the server. The fastest fix is to identify the server’s exact version and select that version in the official launcher. Server administrators who need to support several releases can use ViaVersion or ViaBackwards, while an outright server update should be preceded by a world backup and plugin-compatibility check.

What a Minecraft version mismatch error means
When you connect, Minecraft compares a protocol version supplied by your client with the protocol version accepted by the server. If those values do not match, the connection is refused before you can join the world. A release label is only a convenient way of identifying a build; two differently named releases can share a protocol number, and a label that looks similar does not guarantee compatibility.

The direction in the message is a useful starting point, but do not decide solely from the word “outdated.” Third-party documentation describes Paper and Purpur as displaying the two “Outdated” lines and vanilla as displaying “Incompatible client.” It also reports that, from version 1.16.4 onward, the sentence can appear in either direction. Treat the text as a clue and confirm the actual server version before changing anything.
Find the server version before changing your installation
Every fix depends on knowing what the server is actually running. Do not assume that the newest release in your launcher is the correct one: a private server, community server, or older world may intentionally stay on an earlier release.

- Check the multiplayer entry. The server listing may show a version or compatibility hint beside its name. Record it exactly, including the release family and any sub-version shown.
- Ask an operator. If the listing is missing or ambiguous, ask the administrator for the exact server version.
- Have the operator check the console. A commonly documented check is
/version. The result should identify the server software and release that the administrator needs to match. - Confirm the edition and installation type. Use the version information for the same Minecraft edition and launcher you use to connect. A version number copied from a different edition or server setup is not a reliable match.
Write down the answer before opening the launcher. If the operator says the server was recently updated, ask which version is active now; a stale entry or cached message can send you toward the wrong profile.
How to fix “Outdated client Minecraft” as a player
“Outdated client Minecraft” means your installed game is older than the server’s accepted protocol. You normally do not need to reinstall Minecraft. The official launcher keeps previously downloaded versions available as installation choices.

- Find the profile you use for this server and choose Edit (the exact button text can vary slightly with launcher updates).
- Open the Version selector and choose the exact server release supplied by the operator.
- Save the profile, return to Play, and launch that installation.
- Connect to the server again. If the server version was reported incorrectly, stop and obtain a fresh version check rather than cycling through random releases.
This launcher change affects your profile and your computer only. It does not alter the server or make other players change versions.

“Outdated server Minecraft” normally means your client is newer than the server. Updating your game again will not solve that direction of mismatch. Instead, create or edit a launcher profile that uses the older release the server accepts.

- Ask for, or verify, the server’s exact release.
- In Installations, edit the profile used for the server.
- Select the server’s release in the Version field, even if it is older than the launcher’s default.
- Save and launch the profile, then reconnect.
If the old release is not listed, use the launcher’s available installation options to select it. Previously downloaded versions do not require a complete game reinstall. If the operator has moved the server to a different release since your last visit, replace your profile’s version with the newly confirmed one.
Why choosing “the latest version” can make the error worse
“Latest” describes what your launcher offers, not what a particular server accepts. A server may remain on an older release because its world, plugins, or operating procedures have not been updated. A client that is newer than that server still sends a different protocol number, so the connection fails even though the client itself is current.

Conversely, an “Outdated client!” message is not a request to choose an arbitrary recent release. The server’s exact version is the target. Matching the endpoint, rather than maximizing either side’s version number, is the reliable Minecraft version mismatch fix for an individual player.
Player troubleshooting when the matching profile still fails
- Recheck the server version. If the error changed after you selected a profile, the server may have been updated or the original version information may have been wrong.
- Confirm that the edited profile is the one you launched. Launchers can contain several installations; changing one does not change another.
- Read the full error wording. “Outdated client,” “Outdated server,” and “Incompatible client” are not interchangeable labels. Give the complete message to the operator.
- Do not infer compatibility from release names alone. The connection check uses protocol numbers, and differently named releases can share a protocol number.
- Ask whether the endpoint itself changed. A server operator can confirm that you are connecting to the intended address and that the reported version belongs to that server.
If the operator cannot identify a single version, stop changing profiles at random. The administrator needs to inspect the running server rather than having each player guess.

Server-admin options for supporting different client versions
Administrators have two fundamentally different choices: translate compatible protocol traffic, or update the server so it natively runs the desired release. The right choice depends on whether the goal is temporary access for another client generation or a planned server migration.

Using ViaVersion and ViaBackwards
When ViaVersion is the appropriate direction
Install ViaVersion when the server is on an older release but you want clients running newer releases to connect. The plugin translates network packets between the client protocol and the older server protocol. Players do not install a matching client-side plugin for this arrangement.
When ViaBackwards is needed
Install ViaBackwards when the server is newer and you need older clients to connect. It provides the reverse compatibility path for supported versions. The server administrator installs and maintains it; players use their normal launcher profiles.
What translation cannot do
Protocol translation is not the same as adding every feature from one release to another. A block, item, or other piece of content that exists in one version but not the other may not display correctly for a client that lacks it. A connection that succeeds therefore does not guarantee that every newer feature will be visible or usable to every player.

Practical administrator procedure
- Record the server software and exact release, then identify which client direction must be supported.
- Choose ViaVersion for newer clients joining an older server, or ViaBackwards for older clients joining a newer server.
- Install the plugin build that supports the server software and release, following that software’s plugin installation procedure.
- Restart or reload the server only in the manner supported by the server software.
- Test with a client on each intended release, paying particular attention to blocks and items introduced in only one version.
- Keep a rollback plan and remove or replace the compatibility layer if it creates gameplay or plugin conflicts.
Because compatibility support changes as Minecraft releases change, check the plugin’s current support information before installation rather than assuming every combination is covered.
Updating the server safely
A native update can be the cleanest long-term solution, but it is not a harmless way to clear a red error message. Updating can convert the world in a way that cannot be reversed by simply replacing the server jar. Plugins that have not been updated for the target release can also fail, disable features, or prevent startup.

- Make a complete, restorable backup of the world and server configuration.
- Record the current server release so you know what the backup represents.
- Check every installed plugin for compatibility with the target release.
- Plan maintenance time and tell players which version they should use afterward.
- Test the target server and a copy of the world before changing the live instance whenever your hosting setup allows it.
After the update
- Start the updated server and inspect its startup output for conversion or plugin errors.
- Join with a client on the target release and check the areas and features players rely on.
- Test essential plugins individually instead of assuming that a successful boot means they are working.
- If the world or plugins are not usable, stop further writes and restore the verified backup rather than repeatedly switching versions on the live world.
If the immediate objective is simply to let a few players join, a compatible translation layer may avoid the migration risk. If the objective is to adopt the newer release permanently, schedule the update as a planned maintenance task.

- Skipping the backup. World conversion can be irreversible, so a server update without a restorable copy is an avoidable risk.
- Ignoring plugins. A server can start while an unupdated plugin is broken; verify the features players actually use.
- Trusting a version label more than the running server. The protocol comparison, not a guessed label, determines whether the connection is accepted.

Who needs to install ViaVersion or ViaBackwards?
The server administrator installs the compatibility plugin. Players do not install it for the server-side translation arrangement described here.
Can a compatibility plugin make every new block appear on an old client?
No. Translation covers network protocol differences, but content that a client version does not contain may not display correctly.
