Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen Apache or Nginx serves the wrong site, the cause is almost always one of five things: the hostname resolves to the wrong server, the request reaches a different listener address or port, the hostname does not match the configured names, an unintended default virtual host wins, or HTTPS selects a TLS context before the HTTP request is examined. Fix the problem in that order. Do not start by rearranging configuration files until you have proved where DNS sends the request and which address and port accepted it.

Use this triage order first
A virtual host is selected only after the connection reaches the server and presents a hostname. Configuration directives do not create DNS records. Every hostname that users request must resolve to the address of the Apache or Nginx machine; otherwise, a perfectly written virtual-host block can never receive the request.

- Confirm the listener. Match the connection’s address family, IP address and port with the address and port in the relevant
<VirtualHost>orlistendirective. A name configured on port 443 cannot answer a request that actually arrives on port 80. - Compare the hostname literally. Check spelling, dots, hyphens and the presence or absence of
www. Apache usesServerNameandServerAlias; Nginx usesserver_name. - Determine the fallback. If no name matches, the server uses a default or first-listed virtual host for the selected address and port. The page you see may therefore be a valid site, just not the one you intended.
- For HTTPS, inspect TLS selection. The certificate and server context can be chosen during the TLS handshake using SNI, before the HTTP
Hostheader is processed. A wrong certificate can indicate a TLS selection problem rather than an HTTP routing problem.
Run the same test after each correction. That prevents a DNS problem, a listener problem and a name-matching problem from being mistaken for one another.
Fixing Apache virtual-host selection
1. Verify DNS and the address-port set
Apache first finds the best matching address and port for the connection. Only then does it compare names. Name-based hosting depends on the hostname supplied by the client, while DNS must already map that hostname to the correct IP address.

Check the address returned for each requested hostname, then inspect the Apache configuration for the same address and port. For example, a block written as <VirtualHost 203.0.113.10:80> is in a different address-port set from a block bound to another address or to port 443. If the request arrives on an address that has no matching block, Apache cannot select the site you expected.
- Test the bare hostname and every alternate hostname separately.
- Check HTTP and HTTPS independently; they normally use different ports and may have different virtual-host lists.
- Make sure the address in the block is actually assigned to the server that received the connection.
2. Give every block an explicit ServerName
Put an explicit ServerName inside every name-based virtual host. Add alternate hostnames with ServerAlias, rather than relying on an inferred name. Apache warns that omitting ServerName can allow an implicitly derived name to affect matching.

</VirtualHost>The names must match what the client sends. A request for www.game.example.test will not match a block that contains only game.example.test unless the former is listed as a ServerAlias. Conversely, do not place an unrelated hostname in an alias simply to make a test page appear; that hides the real routing error.
3. Understand Apache’s fallback
After Apache chooses the best address and port, it searches the ServerName and ServerAlias values in that set. If none matches, Apache serves the first listed virtual host for that address and port. This explains the common symptom “Apache always shows the first site”: the first site is acting as the fallback because the requested name did not match any later block.
Do not fix that symptom by moving blocks around before correcting the name. Reordering can change the page shown for unmatched traffic while leaving valid requests broken. Once names are correct, you can deliberately choose which block should be the fallback by making it the first block in the relevant address-port set.

4. Inspect Apache’s parsed map, not just the files
Apache can combine included files, listen directives and virtual-host definitions in ways that are easy to misread. On Unix-like systems run:
apachectl -SOn Windows, use:
httpd.exe -SThese commands show how Apache parsed the virtual-host map: addresses, ports, names and default ordering. Apache’s documentation puts the diagnostic purpose plainly: “If you are trying to debug your virtual host configuration, you may find the -S command line switch useful.”
Read the output as a routing map. Look for a hostname attached to the wrong address or port, the same name attached to multiple blocks, a missing alias, and an unintended first virtual host. Fix the configuration that produced the parsed map rather than editing a generated or unrelated file.
5. Reload and test with the intended Host header
After correcting names, addresses or ordering, reload Apache using the service mechanism for your operating system, then send a request that explicitly carries the hostname you are troubleshooting. A direct test can look like:
curl -i -H "Host: game.example.test" http://203.0.113.10/This test separates HTTP name matching from DNS: it connects to the chosen address while asking Apache for a particular host. Use the actual public hostname in a second test so that DNS and the virtual-host result are verified together. Repeat the process on port 443 with a TLS-aware client when HTTPS is involved; an HTTP success does not prove that the HTTPS virtual host or certificate is correct.

Fixing Nginx server-block selection
1. Check the listen socket first
Nginx can select a server block only among blocks listening on the address and port that accepted the connection. Confirm that the request reaches the intended socket before comparing names. Keep separate checks for HTTP and HTTPS because each may have a different set of blocks and a different default.
If a block listens on a specific address while the request arrives through another address, the block is not a candidate even if its server_name is perfect. Correct the listen address or the DNS destination, then retest.
2. Match the request against server_name
Nginx supports exact names, wildcard names and regular expressions in server_name. Selection depends on the matching rules and precedence for those forms, so overlapping patterns can send a request to a block other than the one you expected.

}Keep names explicit where possible. Put the exact hostnames that matter to users in a clear block, use a wildcard only when the whole name pattern should share behavior, and treat regular expressions as an advanced rule that must be checked for overlap. A typo in a name or a pattern that captures more hosts than intended is a routing error, not a content error.

3. Identify the default server
When no server_name matches on a listen socket, Nginx sends the request to a default server for that socket. That default response is often mistaken for proof that Nginx ignored the requested name. In reality, it indicates that the request did not match a candidate block.

Make the intended default explicit on the relevant listen directive and give unmatched traffic a deliberate response. Then fix the missing or incorrect name in the real site block. A default server should be a safe fallback, not a substitute for listing the production hostname.
4. Resolve overlapping exact, wildcard and regex rules
When several blocks appear plausible, compare their server_name forms side by side. Nginx’s exact, wildcard and regular-expression categories do not have interchangeable priority. Remove redundant patterns, narrow broad wildcards, and quote regular expressions that contain characters Nginx could otherwise interpret as configuration syntax.
After each change, test a hostname that should match the exact rule, one that should match the wildcard, and one that should fall through to the default. This small set exposes accidental overlap much faster than testing only the homepage.
5. Fix name-table startup errors
If Nginx refuses to start with an error such as could not build the server_names_hash, the problem is the name table rather than which site wins a request. Follow the documented remedies:
- Increase
server_names_hash_bucket_sizefor unusually long names. - Increase
server_names_hash_max_sizewhen many names are configured.
Apply the directive in the appropriate HTTP configuration scope, check the configuration, and restart or reload only after the check succeeds. Keep names explicit and remove obsolete aliases where possible; reducing unnecessary entries can make the configuration easier to reason about as well as reducing table pressure.

Why HTTPS can show the wrong site even when HTTP works
HTTPS adds a selection step before Nginx or Apache processes the HTTP request. During the TLS handshake, the client can send the intended hostname as SNI. The server may choose a TLS context and certificate at that point, before it receives the request line and Host header.
This creates two distinct failure patterns:
- Wrong certificate or handshake context: SNI did not select the intended HTTPS configuration, so the browser reports a certificate for another site or displays the other site’s TLS behavior.
- Correct certificate but wrong content: TLS selection succeeded, but the subsequent HTTP hostname did not match the expected server block, so the default or first matching block served the response.
Check certificate coverage and SNI alongside the HTTP name. Do not infer that an HTTP fix automatically repairs HTTPS; verify the 443 listener, the HTTPS virtual-host or server-block names, and the certificate presented for the hostname. A test that sends only an HTTP Host header cannot reproduce a missing or incorrect SNI value.

The practical failure patterns are the same in both servers—DNS destination, listener address or port, hostname mismatch, fallback ordering and TLS selection—but the names and diagnostic views differ.
Symptom-to-cause troubleshooting guide
Apache always serves the first configured site
- Confirm DNS points the requested hostname to this Apache instance.
- Confirm the request reaches the address and port represented by the block.
- Add an explicit
ServerNameand every requiredServerAlias. - Run
apachectl -Sorhttpd.exe -Sand check whether the name appears in the intended address-port set. - Only after those checks, decide whether the first block should remain the deliberate fallback.
Nginx always shows the default site
- Check that the request’s hostname exactly matches an applicable
server_name. - Verify the request arrived on the
listenaddress and port used by that block. - Inspect overlapping wildcard or regular-expression names.
- Identify the default server for that socket and confirm that the request is not simply unmatched.
HTTP is correct but HTTPS is wrong
- Compare the HTTP and HTTPS listener addresses and ports.
- Check the HTTPS names separately; an HTTP name does not automatically create an HTTPS match.
- Inspect SNI behavior and the certificate presented during the handshake.
- After TLS is correct, verify the HTTP
Hostrouting inside the selected HTTPS context.
Nginx will not start after adding many names
- Read the exact startup error.
could not build the server_names_hashidentifies a name-table sizing problem. - Use
server_names_hash_bucket_sizefor unusually long names. - Use
server_names_hash_max_sizewhen the configuration contains many names. - Quote regular expressions containing characters that could be parsed as Nginx syntax.
A repeatable validation procedure
- Write down the exact hostname, scheme and port that fail. Treat
example,www.example, HTTP and HTTPS as separate test cases. - Verify DNS sends each hostname to the intended server address.
- Use the server’s configuration to identify the matching address-port or
listenset. - For Apache, inspect the parsed map with
apachectl -Sorhttpd.exe -S. For Nginx, inspect all candidateserver_namepatterns and the default for the socket. - Correct the explicit hostname directives and remove overlaps that make selection ambiguous.
- Check the configuration, reload the service, and test with an explicit HTTP
Hostheader where appropriate. - For HTTPS, repeat the test while checking SNI and the certificate, then verify the final HTTP response from the selected context.
- Test an unmatched hostname deliberately. It should reach the documented fallback rather than an accidental production site.
This sequence keeps each layer observable: DNS decides where the connection goes, the listener decides which address-port set can answer, name matching chooses the site, and TLS may choose a context before HTTP headers arrive.
