How to Fix VMware Horizon Client Timeout Settings

By VGSources Team 14 min read

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

There is no single VMware Horizon Client timeout switch. The correct fix depends on where the timer expires: an idle Horizon Console or Connection Server session, a connection ticket that expires before authentication, a disconnected desktop session, or a Windows Client policy. Identify that stage first, then change the setting at the Console, Agent, or Client layer that owns it.

Confirm the Horizon Client, Horizon Agent, Connection Server, and operating-system versions before changing values. Record the exact message and timestamp, because a timeout during login requires a different remedy from a timeout after a desktop has already disconnected.

Identify which Horizon timer is expiring

Use the symptom and the point in the connection flow to select the right configuration layer. Changing an unrelated timeout can leave the failure untouched or weaken session security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you see Timer owner When the timer starts Typical scope Restart or new session
Horizon Console returns you to sign-in after inactivity Horizon Console or Connection Server global settings Idle administrator session Connection Server or administrator session, with possible per-user override Changes are immediate; a new session may be needed to test the next-session behavior
The desktop never opens and authentication takes too long Horizon Agent ConnectionTicketTimeout policy Connection-ticket validity period Agent or managed desktop policy Apply through the normal policy process and test a new connection
Windows Client behavior differs between managed and unmanaged PCs Horizon Client configuration Client policy or setting-dependent event One user, one computer, or an enterprise fleet Follow the setting’s documented session requirement
A desktop or published application logs out after a network drop Horizon Agent or pool disconnected-session policy Disconnect event Desktop pool, application pool, or Agent policy Test a fresh session and the affected pool

A timeout is not proof that the configured value is too short. DNS delays, routing problems, certificate trust failures, clock skew, slow authentication providers, proxies, and load balancers can consume the available time without any policy being wrong.

Match the timer to its owner

The Console layer protects an administrator’s management session. It does not determine how long a user may take to authenticate to a virtual desktop. The Agent layer validates the connection ticket and decides what happens to a desktop after a disconnect. The Windows Client layer controls endpoint behavior and is where enterprise administrators enforce client settings. This ownership model prevents a common mistake: raising a Console timeout when the actual failure is an expired Agent ticket.

Scope matters as much as ownership. A global Connection Server value can affect many administrators, while a personal override can affect only one account. An Agent policy may apply to a desktop pool or managed image. A Client setting can be per-user or computer-wide. Always note the intended scope before saving a change.

Collect facts before editing a setting

Do this short diagnostic pass first. It prevents a broad timeout increase from hiding the actual fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Copy the complete timeout message, including any error code, and note the exact time.
  • State whether it happened at sign-in, while the desktop was launching, during an active session, or after a disconnect.
  • Record the Horizon Client, Horizon Agent, Connection Server, and Windows versions.
  • Map the connection path: direct access, proxy, load balancer, security appliance, or another gateway.
  • Check certificate trust on the client and the Agent side, and verify that DNS resolves every required Horizon name.
  • Check routing in both directions where applicable. A reachable Connection Server does not guarantee that the Agent can complete the return connection.
  • Compare the clocks on the client, Connection Server, and Agent. Significant skew can invalidate authentication or certificates.
  • For a managed Windows computer, run the effective Group Policy result before touching the registry. A policy may be enforcing a value that makes a local edit appear ineffective.
  • Write down whether the user sees a 60-second warning, an immediate sign-in page, a desktop that remains disconnected, or a forced logoff. These outcomes identify different timers.
  • Record whether the issue affects one user, one device, one desktop pool, or every connection. A narrow impact usually points to scope, endpoint, or policy application rather than a global timeout.

Change one control at a time and test with a controlled account or device. Keep a record of the old value so you can restore it after diagnosis.

Change an idle Horizon Console or Connection Server timeout

Use this path when an administrator is working in Horizon Console and is signed out after being idle, or when the Connection Server session itself expires. These settings do not control how long an end user has to authenticate to a desktop.

Open the global settings page

  1. Sign in to Horizon Console with an account permitted to change global settings.
  2. Open Settings > Global Settings > General Settings.
  3. Identify the setting that matches the symptom: the Connection Server session timeout or the Horizon Console/API session timeout.
  4. Enter a value within the range shown by the product and save the change.
  5. Start a new administrator session if the changed setting specifies that it applies to the next session, then test with the same idle interval that previously failed.

Understand the documented limits

The Connection Server session-timeout control accepts values from 2 to 4320 minutes, which is 72 hours. The Horizon Console/API session timeout has a documented default of 10 minutes and accepts values from 10 to 4320 minutes. A user can also have a personal Connection Server session-timeout override, so a global value may not be the effective value for every administrator.

Changes to these global settings take effect immediately; restarting Connection Server or Horizon Client is not required. The Console displays a 60-second warning before an idle session expires. Treat that warning as a useful confirmation that you are changing the correct timer.

Balance convenience and administrator security

Do not set an idle session to an extremely high value simply to avoid interruptions. Omnissa warns that a high Horizon Console Idle Session Timeout increases the risk of unauthorized use. Choose a value consistent with your organization’s session-security policy, document any exception, and require administrators to sign out when they leave a trusted workstation.

Do not confuse the two global values. The Connection Server session timeout concerns the authenticated Connection Server session, while the Horizon Console/API value governs Console and API activity. If only browser administration is timing out, change the Console/API control rather than extending every Connection Server session.

Fix a timeout before the desktop opens

If the user enters credentials but the desktop does not open before the error appears, inspect the Horizon Agent connection-ticket policy rather than the Console idle timer.

Check ConnectionTicketTimeout

  1. Open the Active Directory Group Policy editor used to manage the Horizon Agent, and load the Horizon Agent ADMX template that matches your deployment.
  2. Locate the ConnectionTicketTimeout policy.
  3. Determine whether the policy is configured and what value is being applied to the affected desktop or pool.
  4. If the policy is not configured, use the documented default of 900 seconds as the baseline for diagnosis.
  5. After confirming the network and authentication path is healthy, make the smallest approved increase that gives the handshake enough time. Apply the policy through your normal Group Policy process, then test a controlled desktop.

The connection ticket is valid only for its configured period, and authentication must complete before it expires. Increasing that period cannot repair a blocked route, an untrusted certificate, a name-resolution failure, a clock problem, or an authentication provider that is unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the causes that consume the ticket lifetime

  • DNS: verify that the client resolves the Connection Server and that the Agent-side names resolve as expected.
  • Routing and firewalls: trace the path through every gateway, proxy, load balancer, and security appliance. Look for asymmetric routing or a device delaying the handshake.
  • Certificates: confirm that the client trusts the certificate chain and that names and validity dates match the Horizon endpoints.
  • Clock synchronization: compare client, Connection Server, and Agent time. Correct skew before changing a lifetime.
  • Authentication latency: check the identity provider or other authentication service for delays, retries, or failures.

If the same user succeeds when connecting through a shorter path, the path or an intermediary is a stronger suspect than the ticket value. Capture logs and timestamps for the Horizon administrator before making a larger change.

Why a ticket increase can appear to work temporarily

A larger ticket lifetime can let a slow authentication attempt reach the next stage, making the original error disappear. That does not prove the value is correct. The added time may simply move the failure to certificate validation, agent reachability, or session establishment. Compare a direct and proxied connection, and test both a known-good and affected desktop, before approving a permanent increase.

Configure Windows Horizon Client settings correctly

Windows Client behavior should be managed with the Horizon Client ADMX template in Active Directory Group Policy for an enterprise fleet. This gives administrators a central, auditable setting and avoids a different value on each workstation.

Use the documented precedence order

Horizon applies configuration in this order:

  1. Group Policy settings have the highest precedence.
  2. Windows Registry settings are used when an applicable Group Policy setting is not overriding them.
  3. Command-line settings have the lowest precedence.

Omnissa states that Group Policy settings take precedence over Windows Registry settings, and Windows Registry settings take precedence over the command line. If a registry edit appears to do nothing, check the effective Group Policy result first. A command-line value can likewise be ignored when a registry or policy value is already present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roll out an ADMX policy safely

  1. Confirm that the ADMX template matches the Horizon Client release installed on the target devices.
  2. Define whether the setting belongs to the user or the computer population.
  3. Deploy it to a small pilot group before assigning it to the full fleet.
  4. Verify the effective policy on a pilot device and record the resulting value.
  5. Test sign-in, desktop launch, disconnect, and reconnect behavior using the production connection path.
  6. Expand deployment only after the pilot confirms that the policy does not conflict with a personal or computer-wide requirement.

Keep one authoritative policy whenever possible. Competing policies at different organizational-unit levels make troubleshooting harder because a local administrator may see a value that is not the effective value.

Use the registry only as a controlled fallback

For a per-user setting, the documented registry location is HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareOmnissaHorizonClient. For a computer-wide setting, use HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareOmnissaHorizonClient. Back up the relevant key before editing, record the value and data type, and test with one user or device.

Registry configuration is a compatibility fallback, not the durable management method. Omnissa notes that registry settings might not be supported in a future release, so migrate recurring settings to the matching ADMX policy when one is available. Avoid mixing a local registry value, a command-line switch, and a Group Policy value during diagnosis; leave only the intended control in force.

A per-user key will not necessarily affect another Windows account on the same workstation, while a computer-wide key can affect every user. That distinction explains why a setting may appear fixed for one person but unchanged for another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle a timeout after a desktop disconnects

A desktop that logs off, closes an application, or returns to the login screen after a network interruption is following a different policy path from an initial connection-ticket timeout.

Classify the result

  • Disconnected: the desktop remains available and may be reconnectable. Inspect the Horizon Agent or pool policy governing disconnected-session behavior.
  • Logged off: a policy ended the session. Inspect the pool’s disconnected-session logout and session-timeout settings.
  • Returned to sign-in: determine whether the Client lost its connection, the Agent ended the session, or an intermediary reset the channel.

Record the exact outcome, how long after the disconnect it occurred, and whether all users or only one pool are affected. Then inspect the Agent and pool policies that govern disconnected-session logout and total session behavior. Do not change ConnectionTicketTimeout for a session that had already authenticated successfully.

Test reconnect behavior separately from fresh login. A reconnect can succeed while a new login fails, or the reverse, because the two paths use different stages and policies. Preserve the original desktop state and timestamps when escalating so the administrator can correlate the disconnect with Agent and intermediary logs.

When increasing a timeout does not solve the problem

A longer timer is useful only when the operation is valid but slow. Use this sequence when the error persists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reproduce the issue with the original value and capture the message and timestamp.
  2. Test name resolution and basic connectivity from the affected client to the Connection Server and, where relevant, to the Agent path.
  3. Test the same account from a known-good network or device to separate an endpoint problem from a server-side problem.
  4. Review certificate trust and expiration on every Horizon endpoint in the path.
  5. Compare system clocks and correct synchronization issues.
  6. Check authentication-provider response time and failures during the exact reproduction window.
  7. Inspect proxy, load-balancer, and security-appliance logs for dropped, delayed, or rewritten Horizon traffic.
  8. Confirm the effective Group Policy value and verify that no registry or command-line setting is overriding the change you intended.

If the failure moves to a later stage after a policy change, that is useful evidence: the original timer may have been reached, but the underlying handshake or session problem still needs correction.

Common configuration pitfalls

  • Editing the wrong layer: a Console idle value cannot extend an Agent connection ticket.
  • Ignoring a personal override: one administrator may have a different effective Connection Server timeout from the global setting.
  • Changing the registry under policy control: Group Policy will continue to win, making the local edit look broken.
  • Using a command-line switch for a managed fleet: the value can be superseded by registry or policy configuration.
  • Raising values without a rollback: temporary diagnostic settings can become permanent security exceptions.
  • Testing only from one path: a direct connection may hide a proxy or load-balancer delay that users experience elsewhere.

Test the setting at its real scope

For a global setting, test a new administrator session. For an Agent policy, test a desktop in the affected pool. For a Client policy, test both a managed and an unmanaged device if those populations differ. Use the same connection path and authentication method that produced the original error.

Record the exact test interval, whether the 60-second Console warning appeared, whether authentication completed before 900 seconds when the default applied, and whether the session was disconnected or logged off. These observations make the final policy choice measurable instead of anecdotal.

Keep security limits explicit

Document the approved value, the policy layer that enforces it, the affected scope, and the reason for the change. Note whether a user-specific override exists. High idle values can leave an authenticated Console session unattended, while long connection-ticket lifetimes extend the period in which a ticket remains valid; neither should be increased without a security review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore the previous value after diagnosis

Once DNS, routing, certificates, clocks, and authentication are healthy, return an investigative increase to the organization’s approved value if the original change was only a diagnostic measure. Remove temporary registry or command-line overrides so the intended Group Policy or global setting remains authoritative.

Quick decision checklist

  • Idle administrator session: use Settings > Global Settings > General Settings and adjust the appropriate Connection Server or Horizon Console/API timeout.
  • Desktop fails before opening: inspect Agent ConnectionTicketTimeout, then verify DNS, routing, certificates, clocks, authentication, and intermediary devices.
  • Managed Windows Client behaves unexpectedly: check effective Group Policy before the registry; remember that policy overrides registry, and registry overrides command line.
  • Session ends after a disconnect: inspect Agent and pool disconnected-session policies, and distinguish a disconnect from a forced logoff or a return to sign-in.
  • Any timeout: capture the exact stage, versions, path, and timestamp before changing a value.

As an optional shortcut for broader Windows problems around crashes, broken system elements, or configuration issues, Outbyte PC Repair can complement an antivirus; it does not replace one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop VMware Horizon Client from timing out?

First identify when it times out. Use Horizon Console global settings for an idle administrator session, the Horizon Agent ConnectionTicketTimeout policy when authentication or desktop launch exceeds the ticket lifetime, Windows Horizon Client ADMX policy for endpoint behavior, and Agent or pool disconnected-session policies after a network drop. Check DNS, routing, certificates, clocks, authentication latency, and intermediary devices before increasing any value.

Where is the Horizon Client session timeout setting?

For an idle administrator session, open Settings > Global Settings > General Settings in Horizon Console. The Connection Server session timeout ranges from 2 to 4320 minutes. The Horizon Console/API timeout defaults to 10 minutes and ranges from 10 to 4320 minutes. Windows Client-specific controls belong in the Horizon Client ADMX policy; the exact setting depends on the behavior being changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Horizon time out before my desktop opens?

The Horizon Agent connection ticket may expire before authentication completes. Check ConnectionTicketTimeout; when it is unconfigured, the documented default is 900 seconds. Also verify DNS, routing, certificate trust, clock synchronization, authentication-provider response time, proxies, load balancers, and security appliances.

How can I increase the VMware Horizon connection timeout?

Increase only the timer that owns the symptom. For a pre-launch authentication timeout, adjust the Agent ConnectionTicketTimeout policy by the smallest approved amount after validating the connection path. For an idle Console session, change the relevant global setting. Test one controlled account or device and document a rollback value.

What takes precedence: Horizon Group Policy, registry, or command line?

Group Policy has the highest precedence, Windows Registry settings come next, and command-line settings have the lowest precedence. Check the effective policy before editing the registry. Registry locations are HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareOmnissaHorizonClient for per-user values and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareOmnissaHorizonClient for computer-wide values.

Do I need to restart Connection Server or Horizon Client after changing a global timeout?

No. Omnissa documents that changes to the listed global settings take effect immediately and do not require a Connection Server or Horizon Client restart. Start a new administrator session when necessary to test next-session behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the 60-second Horizon warning mean?

Horizon Console displays a 60-second warning before an idle session expires. Seeing that warning confirms that the Console idle-session timer, rather than a connection-ticket or disconnected-desktop policy, is controlling the event.

Should I leave a very high timeout in place?

Usually not without a security review. Omnissa warns that a high Horizon Console Idle Session Timeout increases unauthorized-use risk. Long connection-ticket lifetimes also extend the period in which a ticket remains valid. Restore temporary diagnostic increases to the approved value after the underlying network or authentication issue is fixed.

The Bottom Line

Fix the Horizon timeout at the layer that owns the failure: Console for idle administrator sessions, Agent for connection-ticket validity and disconnected desktops, and Client policy for Windows endpoint behavior. The documented limits include 2–4320 minutes for the Connection Server session timeout, 10–4320 minutes for the Horizon Console/API timeout with a 10-minute default, and a 900-second default ConnectionTicketTimeout when the Agent policy is unconfigured. Verify effective policy, DNS, routing, certificates, clocks, authentication, and intermediary devices before raising values, then test at the real scope and roll back temporary changes.
