How to Fix Voice Chat and Co-Driver Audio Problems in Rally Games

By VGSources Team 9 min read

If your rally game plays the engine and tyre noise but the co-driver is silent, start in the game’s audio menu: enable co-driver voice, raise the co-driver and speech sliders, and choose an output mode that matches your actual hardware. If that does not restore speech, test the operating-system output device and channel layout, then check voice-chat permissions, microphone routing and push-to-talk bindings. This guide separates those failure paths so you can identify whether the problem is a muted setting, an incorrect audio route, a missing center channel or a microphone issue.

First identify which audio path has failed

“No voice” can describe several different faults. A co-driver’s pace notes are game dialogue played through the output device; online voice chat is a network feature that also depends on an input device, a mute state and platform privacy settings. They can fail independently.

What you hear Most likely path to check first Useful test
Engine, music and effects work; co-driver is completely silent Co-driver toggle, speech/co-driver sliders, output channel routing Run a short tutorial or quiet stage after enabling voice and selecting a stereo or headphone mode
Co-driver is audible but too quiet Relative game sliders or competing sounds Raise co-driver and speech while lowering engine, effects and music
You hear the co-driver; other players cannot hear you Microphone selection, mute, push-to-talk and privacy permissions Use the game’s voice test or speak while the push-to-talk indicator is visible
Speech disappears only on a TV, receiver or HDMI display Output device or stereo/surround channel mapping Switch temporarily to built-in speakers or a headset
Dialogue is missing in every game Platform, driver, spatial-audio or hardware routing Test a second game and a different physical output

Reproduce the problem in a quiet stage or tutorial before changing several options at once. Note whether engine and effects remain present. That observation determines whether you need a game-setting fix or a system-routing diagnosis.

Use this platform-agnostic repair sequence

  1. Reproduce and classify the fault. Start a stage with minimal menu noise. Confirm whether engine, tyre, surface and music sounds are present and whether only speech is absent.
  2. Enable the co-driver in the game. Open the audio or accessibility section and make sure the voice-over control is on. Set co-driver and speech levels above zero.
  3. Match the mastering mode to the hardware. Choose Headphones for a headset. Use a TV, stereo or equivalent two-speaker mode for a television or simple HDMI stereo path. Do not use a surround preset when no center and rear speakers are connected.
  4. Check the platform output. In Windows, PlayStation or Xbox sound settings, select the headset, television or receiver that is physically carrying the sound. Temporarily disable spatial audio and virtual-surround processing.
  5. Restart after changing the default device. Some games keep the device selected at launch. Close the game completely, change the platform output, then launch it again.
  6. Test another physical output. Compare a headset with built-in speakers, or the TV speakers with a headset. If one works, the game is producing dialogue and the original output chain is the problem.
  7. Check online voice chat separately. Verify the game’s voice-chat toggle, push-to-talk binding, microphone mute switch and platform privacy permission. Select the intended microphone in the operating system.
  8. Escalate by scope. If only one title fails, use that game’s official support route. If every game loses dialogue, troubleshoot the platform, driver, receiver and speaker layout first.

EA SPORTS WRC: restore the co-driver voice

EA SPORTS WRC exposes separate controls for the output profile and for individual sound groups. Open the game’s audio settings and work through them in this order.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Turn on the documented voice-over control

Look for the exact setting “Co-Driver Voice – Turn On/Off Co-Driver voice over.” Set it to On. This is independent of co-driver timing and call-type choices: those gameplay options affect when and what calls are made, not whether the voice track is permitted to play.

Choose an appropriate Audio Mastering mode

EA documents five Audio Mastering modes:

Mode Use it when
TV The television’s own speakers are the output.
Headphones A wired or wireless headset is the direct output.
Home Cinema A genuine multichannel home-cinema system is connected.
Soundbar A soundbar is decoding the signal.
Night Mode You need reduced dynamic range for quieter listening; it is not a routing fix.

For diagnosis, use Headphones with a headset or a straightforward TV/stereo path with two speakers. A surround profile can send dialogue to a center channel that your setup does not have, making all other game sounds appear normal while speech vanishes.

Rebalance the independent sliders

WRC provides separate sliders for master, co-driver, speech, music, effects, engine and surfaces. First raise Master, Co-Driver and Speech to a clearly audible level. Then lower Engine, Effects, Music and other competing categories rather than continuing to raise the global volume. This preserves headroom and makes pace notes intelligible without making every sound uncomfortably loud.

After changing the profile or sliders, drive a short section with predictable calls. If the co-driver returns through headphones but not through the television, stop changing in-game levels and investigate the HDMI or speaker route instead.

DiRT Rally 2.0: separate online chat from pace-note audio

On PC, the official configuration manual documents network voice and a push-to-speak action. Those controls govern communication with other players; they do not replace the co-driver’s single-player voice track.

Check the microphone and push-to-talk action

  1. Select the intended microphone as the operating system’s input device. If you use a headset, choose its microphone rather than a laptop webcam or monitor input.
  2. In the game’s controls or input configuration, locate the network voice or push-to-speak action and bind it to a key or controller button you can press while driving.
  3. Confirm that neither the game nor the headset has a mute switch engaged. Hardware mute buttons can override an apparently correct software setting.
  4. Check the platform’s privacy permissions for microphone access. A blocked permission prevents teammates from hearing you even when the game binding is correct.
  5. Test again after restarting the game if you changed the default input or output device.

If you can hear the co-driver but cannot transmit, this input-path checklist is the relevant branch. If the co-driver itself is missing, return to output mode, game audio levels and channel routing; changing the microphone will not restore playback.

Fix output routing on Windows, PlayStation and Xbox

When effects are audible but speech is not, the game may be sending dialogue to a channel your current device does not reproduce. Community troubleshooting reports describe this as an anecdotal cause, so use it as a diagnostic lead rather than a universal explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows

  • Open the system sound output list and select the device that is physically connected: the headset, TV, AV receiver or soundbar.
  • Check the per-application volume mixer. Make sure the rally game is not muted or assigned to a different output than the system default.
  • For the test, disable Windows spatial audio and any virtual-surround enhancement supplied by the driver or headset software.
  • Set the device to a simple stereo configuration. If speech returns, re-enable processing one feature at a time to find the setting that caused the loss.

PlayStation and Xbox

  • Open the console’s sound-output settings and explicitly choose the connected headset, TV or receiver rather than leaving an unintended automatic device selected.
  • Use stereo or uncompressed two-channel output for the first test. Avoid a surround layout when the physical system has no center or rear channels.
  • Check console privacy and communication settings if online chat is also affected, and confirm that the headset’s mute control is off.
  • Close and relaunch the game after changing the console’s default output. Then compare the same stage through a second output device.

HDMI, receiver and soundbar checks

HDMI can carry several channel layouts. A television may downmix a surround signal differently from an AV receiver, while a soundbar may expect a particular format. Select the output profile that matches the device actually decoding the signal. If a direct headset works, reconnect the HDMI chain one component at a time and test after each change.

When the co-driver is audible but too quiet

Do not solve a quiet pace note only by turning up Master. In WRC, raise Co-Driver and Speech first, then reduce Engine, Effects, Music and Surfaces until calls are distinct. This relative balance is usually more comfortable and leaves warning sounds usable.

Headphones mastering mode is a useful controlled test even if you normally use another setup. It provides a known two-channel path and removes uncertainty about a missing center speaker. If the voice is clear in Headphones mode but not in Home Cinema or Soundbar mode, the problem is almost certainly the output profile or downstream channel handling rather than the recorded dialogue.

Voice chat troubleshooting when the co-driver works

Online chat has two directions: the game must play other people through your output device and send your microphone through the input device. Diagnose each direction independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot hear other players

  • Confirm the game’s voice-chat feature is enabled and that chat volume is not at zero.
  • Check whether the chat channel is routed to a different device from game audio. Select the same headset or television route for the test.
  • Remove an unintended mute from the game, console party controls or headset.
  • Test with a direct stereo headset to eliminate HDMI and surround routing.

Other players cannot hear you

  • Choose the correct microphone in the operating system or console settings.
  • Release any hardware mute switch and verify the game’s push-to-talk binding.
  • Check platform privacy permissions for voice communication and microphone access.
  • Try the headset microphone separately from a built-in laptop, webcam or controller microphone so the input path is unambiguous.

Keep a note of which direction fails. Rebinding push-to-talk cannot fix a missing co-driver, and changing speaker output cannot authorize a blocked microphone.

Use a controlled isolation test

A short matrix of tests can identify the failing component without guessing:

Test Interpretation
Same game, headset instead of TV or HDMI Voice returns: investigate the original speakers, receiver, channel layout or HDMI route.
Same output, a second rally game Only one title fails: focus on that game’s voice toggle, sliders and support documentation.
Headphones mastering or stereo output instead of surround Voice returns: the prior center/surround mapping or virtual processing was unsuitable.
Different microphone with the same speakers Only chat changes: the original input device, mute state or permission is at fault.
Every game loses dialogue on every output Investigate platform audio, drivers, receiver configuration or hardware before changing game settings.

Change one variable per test and write down the result. Returning to the last known-good combination is faster than changing multiple sliders and devices simultaneously.

When to contact official support

Use the EA SPORTS WRC support hub after the configuration, routing and alternate-output checks fail. Its support routes include connection troubleshooting, PC diagnosis with DxDiag and crash or freezing guidance. Include your platform, output device, mastering mode, whether effects remain audible, and the exact steps that reproduced the missing speech.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DiRT Rally 2.0 has limited game-specific support listed in its support information. General EA troubleshooting and community channels may still help, but document your input and output devices and whether the issue affects one title or every game. That distinction tells support whether to investigate a game configuration or the platform audio chain.

Hardware that can simplify diagnosis

A model-neutral stereo gaming headset with a microphone is the only physical category directly relevant to both failure paths. It gives you a dedicated two-channel output for co-driver audio and a defined microphone input for online chat, bypassing uncertain television, receiver and center-channel routing. Verify compatibility with your platform, connector type and current availability before buying; a headset is an isolation tool, not a guarantee that a game setting or privacy permission is correct.

Keep a working configuration

  • Record the output device, mastering mode and channel layout that produced clear speech.
  • Leave Co-Driver Voice enabled and keep co-driver and speech levels separate from the global Master setting.
  • After installing a driver, headset utility or receiver firmware update, retest a tutorial stage before an online event.
  • When moving from headset to TV or HDMI, change the game’s mastering mode and the platform output together, then restart the game.
  • Keep microphone mute and push-to-talk controls visible or easy to reach so a communication failure is not mistaken for a co-driver failure.

The Bottom Line

Restore rally-game dialogue by enabling the co-driver voice control, balancing the dedicated speech sliders and matching the game’s mastering mode to the real output device. If effects work but speech does not, test stereo or headphones and inspect the platform’s routing and channel layout; treat microphone, push-to-talk and privacy checks as a separate voice-chat branch.
