If Windows says vsflex8.ocx is missing, cannot be registered, or cannot create the VSFlexGrid control, reinstall the official VSFlexGrid 8.0 or ComponentOne Studio package, then register the installed file from an elevated Command Prompt. Do not download a loose OCX from an unknown DLL site: the correct variant, installation method, license, and 32-bit/64-bit registration all matter.
vsflex8.ocx is the ComponentOne VSFlexGrid 8.0 ActiveX control for ADO/OLEDB data binding. Older applications may instead require a closely related file, so identifying the expected variant is the first step rather than blindly replacing the filename.

What vsflex8.ocx does
VSFlexGrid is an ActiveX grid control used by older Windows applications and Visual Basic-era projects. The standard VSFLEX8.OCX build provides ADO/OLEDB data binding. The control is not normally a standalone Windows component that should be copied from one computer to another; it is installed, registered, and licensed as part of the VSFlexGrid 8.0 or ComponentOne Studio setup.
When an application starts, Windows looks up the control’s registration information. A missing file, an unregistered file, a mismatched variant, an incomplete installation, or a registry entry created with the wrong architecture can all produce messages such as “component vsflex8.ocx or one of its dependencies is not correctly registered,” “file not found,” or “class not registered.” The message does not by itself prove that the OCX is damaged.

Choose the correct VSFlexGrid variant
ComponentOne’s documentation says developers should decide which VSFlexGrid version a project uses before starting or migrating a project. Check the project’s references, form definitions, installer files, or the error’s filename. The variants are not interchangeable merely because their names are similar.
| File | Binding or character-set model | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
vsflex8.ocx |
ADO/OLEDB | The project binds the grid through ADO or OLEDB. |
vsflex8d.ocx |
DAO/RDO | The project was built for DAO or RDO data access. |
vsflex8l.ocx |
Unbound | The application fills and manages the grid without a data-binding provider. |
vsflex8u.ocx |
Unicode ADO/OLEDB | The project requires the Unicode ADO/OLEDB build. |
vsflex8n.ocx |
Unicode Light | The project specifically uses the Unicode Light control. |
If the application explicitly names another variant, install and register that file instead of vsflex8.ocx. Renaming one variant to another does not convert its data-binding model or character-set support.
Is it safe to download vsflex8.ocx?
The safest source is the licensed VSFlexGrid 8.0 or ComponentOne Studio installer supplied by the software publisher or by the application’s vendor. ComponentOne lists vsflex8.ocx among the files installed by its setup and says the installer places it in the Windows system directory. An isolated download from a third-party DLL archive can be the wrong build, altered, incomplete, or incompatible with the application, and copying it does not install the product license.
Use the setup program that came with the application whenever possible. If you are maintaining an old program and no installer is available, ask its publisher or the ComponentOne support channel for the appropriate redistributable package and license terms. Keep the original package rather than collecting individual OCX files from several computers; mixing versions can leave the registry pointing to a file that the application was not built to use.
Step 1: record the exact error and identify the application
Before changing files, write down the full error text, the program that displays it, and whether the problem occurs at launch, when opening a particular form, or during development in Visual Studio. This distinguishes a missing-control problem from a database, permission, or application-data problem.
- Note the exact filename in the message, including the suffix letter:
vsflex8.ocx,vsflex8d.ocx,vsflex8l.ocx,vsflex8u.ocx, orvsflex8n.ocx. - Check whether the program is an installed end-user application or a development project. A development machine may need both 32-bit and 64-bit ActiveX control versions on a 64-bit computer used with Visual Studio.
- Determine whether the failure began after an uninstall, a system migration, a drive change, or a move to a new Windows installation. Those events commonly leave the file absent or its registration pointing to the old path.
Step 2: reinstall the official package
Reinstalling is preferable to copying a replacement file because setup can place every required control, create the correct registry entries, and apply the product’s licensing information.
- Obtain the VSFlexGrid 8.0 or ComponentOne Studio setup package that matches the application’s license and variant. If the application shipped with its own installer, use that installer first.
- Close the affected program, Visual Studio, and any process that may have the control loaded.
- Run the package’s
SETUP.EXEutility on the target computer. ComponentOne’s setup documentation specifically advises usingSETUP.EXEon new computers. - Choose the control components required by the project. On a 64-bit computer used for Visual Studio development, install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions when the setup offers them, because projects and design hosts can use different architectures.
- Allow setup to finish, then restart Windows if the installer requests it. Do not replace the newly installed file with a downloaded copy.
ComponentOne warns that simply copying OCX files and registering them can leave applications created on the new computer unlicensed and cause a banner to appear at runtime. A successful registration message is therefore not proof that a copy-only deployment is legitimate or complete.

Step 3: find the installed file and check its variant
Use File Explorer’s search or the installer log to locate the file that setup installed. Confirm that its spelling and suffix match the application’s requirement. The product documentation describes the OCX files as redistributable and says VSFlexGrid requires no additional DLLs, but the file still must be installed in a location that the registration command can access.
- Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect the file name and version information. A path under the Windows system directory is normal when setup placed it there.
- If more than one copy exists, prefer the copy installed by the current official package. Old copies in an application folder can cause confusion when the program loads a different registration than the one you just repaired.
- Do not delete other variants merely because they are not named in the current error. Another program may depend on them.
Step 4: register the OCX with administrator rights
ComponentOne states that deployed applications must install and register the control. Registration writes system-wide information, so an elevated Command Prompt is normally required.

- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run
regsvr32.exewith the full path to the installed OCX. Put quotation marks around paths containing spaces. For example:%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:PathTovsflex8.ocx" - Replace the filename with the exact variant required by the application. For example, use
vsflex8d.ocxfor a DAO/RDO project rather than registering the ADO/OLEDB build. - Wait for the confirmation dialog. A message such as “DllRegisterServer in … succeeded” means the registration command completed; it does not validate the application’s license or prove that the application uses the same variant.
- Close the elevated window and start the application again.
On a 64-bit edition of Windows, the bitness of regsvr32.exe must match the OCX and the host that will load it. Windows provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit registration tools. If the installed control is 32-bit, use the 32-bit regsvr32.exe supplied with Windows; if it is a 64-bit build, use the 64-bit tool. The official setup’s architecture options and the application’s documentation are the best authority for which pair to use. A 32-bit legacy desktop application generally cannot load a 64-bit ActiveX control, and a 64-bit design host cannot use a 32-bit control in the same process.
What common registration errors mean
“The module … failed to load”
Check the path and filename first. If the path is wrong, regsvr32 cannot open the file. If the file exists, verify that you are using the registration tool with the matching architecture and that the Command Prompt is elevated. Reinstall the official package if the file is incomplete or the wrong variant.
“The specified module could not be found” even though the OCX is visible
The message can mean that the OCX itself, or a required component of the registration process, could not be loaded. Re-run the command with the full quoted path, confirm that the file came from the official setup, and check whether you selected the correct 32-bit or 64-bit tool. Do not respond by downloading a random file with a similar name.
“The entry point DllRegisterServer was not found”
This usually indicates that the file passed to regsvr32 is not a self-registering ActiveX control or is not the expected VSFlexGrid build. Verify the variant and reinstall from the licensed setup package.
“Access is denied”
Close the application and open Command Prompt with Run as administrator. Security software or an organization-managed Windows policy can also block changes to system locations. If elevation is unavailable, contact the computer administrator rather than changing permissions on the Windows directory.
The application still says the control is missing
Compare the filename in the error with the file you registered, then check the application’s architecture. A program that needs vsflex8u.ocx will not be repaired by registering vsflex8.ocx. For a development environment, install the required 32-bit and 64-bit control packages and register each version with the matching tool. Finally, confirm that setup completed and that the application is not loading an older copy from its own folder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA banner says the application is unlicensed
That symptom is consistent with copy-only deployment. ComponentOne’s setup documentation warns that copying and registering OCX files on a new computer can leave applications unlicensed and display a banner. Remove the copy-only installation path and reinstall through the authorized SETUP.EXE package with the appropriate license.
For developers: deploy VSFlexGrid correctly
If you distribute an application that uses VSFlexGrid, treat the control as an installed and licensed component, not as an arbitrary file beside the executable. ComponentOne’s documentation states: “To distribute applications you create with the VSFlexGrid control, you must install and register it on the user’s computer.”
- Include the redistributable VSFlexGrid files and the license terms allowed by your edition.
- Use the official setup mechanism on each target computer. ComponentOne specifically recommends
SETUP.EXEfor new computers. - Install the variant selected by the project: ADO/OLEDB, DAO/RDO, unbound, Unicode ADO/OLEDB, or Unicode Light.
- Register the control during installation with the required administrative rights.
- Test deployment on a clean Windows machine with the same architecture as your supported application.
The documentation lists the OCX files as redistributable and describes VSFlexGrid as requiring no additional DLLs. That does not remove the need for correct registration, licensing, and architecture selection. If your installer cannot complete those tasks, contact the application’s publisher or ComponentOne support rather than distributing a loose file.
Quick Recap
A practical recovery checklist
- Capture the exact error and filename.
- Match the filename to the project’s binding model and Unicode requirement.
- Obtain the official VSFlexGrid 8.0 or ComponentOne Studio installer.
- Run
SETUP.EXEinstead of copying an OCX from another computer. - Install both architecture versions when a 64-bit Visual Studio development machine requires them.
- Locate the installed file and confirm its variant.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run the architecture-matched
regsvr32.exeagainst the full OCX path. - Restart the application and test the form that previously failed.
- If registration still fails, preserve the exact error text and escalate to the application’s publisher or ComponentOne support.
