How to Fix Washed-Out Colors in The Witcher 3 on PC

Compare the same scene with Windows HDR off, then isolate Auto HDR, the game’s HDR calibration, and your display’s picture mode one setting at a time.

If The Witcher 3 looks pale, dim, or washed out on PC, compare the same scene with Windows HDR off before changing graphics settings. If that improves the image, investigate Windows HDR, Auto HDR, the game’s HDR calibration, and your display’s picture mode. If it does not, check those settings one at a time anyway, then verify the game and graphics drivers. The cause depends on your game edition, rendering path, Windows settings, and display; there is no universal setting that fixes every system.

First identify which HDR path and game edition you are using

Before adjusting anything, note whether you have The Witcher 3 Remastered or an older installation, whether you are launching DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 if both are available, whether Windows HDR and Auto HDR are on, and whether the selected display supports HDR. These details matter because Windows Auto HDR and a game’s own HDR implementation are separate paths, and menu names or rendering behavior can differ between editions.

Change one setting at a time and compare the same scene under similar viewing conditions. That makes it easier to identify whether the change helped rather than masking the cause with several simultaneous adjustments.

Compare the game with Windows HDR off

  1. Open Settings > System > Display in Windows and select the display you use for the game.
  2. Check the Windows HDR setting. If it is on, turn it off temporarily.
  3. Close and relaunch The Witcher 3 if the display-mode change does not appear immediately.
  4. Return to the same scene and compare its colors and brightness.

If the washed-out appearance disappears, focus on the HDR path and display modes below. If it remains, continue through the checks rather than assuming Windows HDR was the cause. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix.

Separate Windows HDR from Auto HDR and the game’s HDR

Windows HDR can change how SDR content appears on some displays. Intel’s support documentation says enabling HDR in Windows 10 or Windows 11 can reduce color saturation and sometimes brightness on some laptops, monitors, and TVs. It also explains that SDR may look oversaturated when stretched across a display’s wider native gamut, while HDR maps color to the gamut the display supports. A less vivid-looking SDR image in HDR mode is therefore not automatically evidence of a Witcher 3 defect. Intel’s explanation of reduced color saturation with Windows HDR

Auto HDR is a Windows feature that expands color range and brightness for supported SDR games; it is not the same as a game’s own HDR implementation. Microsoft says it requires an HDR-capable display and is enabled in Settings > System > Display after selecting that HDR display. Temporarily turn Auto HDR off to see whether that conversion layer is involved, then compare again. Microsoft’s Auto HDR setup guidance

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

If Windows HDR is on, confirm that Windows has the intended HDR-capable display selected. You can also adjust Windows’ HDR/SDR brightness balance, or HDR content brightness where that control is available, for viewing comfort. Treat that slider as a brightness-balance adjustment, not a saturation control; increasing it will not necessarily restore accurate color.

Check the monitor or TV’s picture mode

Use the display’s on-screen display (OSD) to check its picture and color-gamut modes. For SDR testing, disable unexpected vivid or dynamic modes and compare an sRGB or Rec.709 mode if the display offers one. When HDR is active, use the display’s appropriate HDR or wide-gamut mode. Mode names and availability vary by monitor or TV, so use its own controls rather than expecting a universal label. Intel recommends checking the display’s color-gamut modes alongside Windows HDR/SDR brightness balance. Intel’s Windows HDR and display-mode guidance

A vivid SDR preset can make an SDR game look more saturated than it should. When Windows HDR is enabled, that same SDR image may instead appear less vivid because the display is handling SDR and HDR color differently. Boosting saturation can conceal the contrast, but it may make colors less accurate; first establish which mode is producing the difference.

Calibrate HDR in The Witcher 3 Remastered

CD PROJEKT RED’s September 28, 2026 announcement for The Witcher 3 Remastered lists updated tone mapping, an updated HDR calibration panel, and native DirectX 12 rendering, and recommends current graphics drivers. If you are using that edition with HDR active, use its in-game HDR calibration panel with your actual display. The announcement does not prescribe universal paper-white or peak-brightness values, so do not copy a number intended for a different screen. CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered announcement

Do not assume an older installation has the same calibration panel, menu labels, or rendering behavior. If you are unsure which edition or renderer is active, record that information before comparing settings; it can help distinguish a game-specific issue from a Windows or display-mode mismatch.

If colors still look wrong, check the installation and drivers

  • Make sure the game is current and use a current graphics driver. CD PROJEKT RED specifically recommends current drivers for Remastered.
  • Use your launcher’s game-file integrity check if the image problem persists.
  • Keep a record of your edition, renderer (DX11 or DX12 where applicable), Windows HDR and Auto HDR states, GPU, and monitor or TV model.
  • Capture a screenshot of the affected scene and include those details if you contact support. They help support distinguish the game path from the display and Windows configuration.

CD PROJEKT RED’s PC support index includes general resources for verifying game-file integrity and updating or clean-installing graphics drivers. Its reviewed support material does not identify one dedicated fix for every washed-out-color case. CD PROJEKT RED PC support for The Witcher 3

Use a repeatable comparison to pinpoint the change

Comparison What to change What the result can tell you
Windows HDR Compare HDR on with HDR off, using the same scene. If the image improves with HDR off, investigate Windows, game, and display HDR handling; the comparison alone does not identify which one is responsible.
Auto HDR With the intended HDR display selected, compare Auto HDR on and off. A difference points toward Windows’ SDR-to-HDR conversion path rather than proving the game’s own HDR is at fault.
Game HDR Compare the game’s HDR setting or calibration with SDR, where the edition provides those options. This helps separate the game’s own HDR output from Windows handling; menu options vary by edition.
Windows HDR/SDR brightness balance Adjust the brightness balance slightly, without changing other settings. This changes perceived brightness balance, not color saturation.
Display OSD Compare sRGB/Rec.709 for SDR with the appropriate HDR or wide-gamut mode for HDR. A mode-dependent change suggests the display’s handling of SDR and HDR is affecting the appearance.
Edition and renderer Record whether you use Remastered or an older installation, and DX11 or DX12 if available. Different editions or rendering paths may expose different menus and behavior; there is no single comparison result that applies to all installations.
