How to fix washed-out or dim colors when streaming games to Steam Deck

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Start by identifying the streaming route, then update SteamOS and the relevant client before changing color controls. Compare the same game with HDR disabled. If SDR looks normal but HDR is dim or desaturated, troubleshoot the HDR chain; if you see smearing or large blocky color areas, troubleshoot encoding and decoding instead. Steam Remote Play and Moonlight with Sunshine use different settings, so there is no single fix that applies to every Deck, host, game and client combination.

First, identify what is actually streaming the game

On a Steam Deck, “streaming” can mean two materially different paths:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Streaming path Where the game runs Color checks that matter most Typical failure clues
Steam Remote Play A PC running Steam, connected through Steam’s Remote Play service SteamOS and Steam client versions, HDR support, Steam’s hardware encoding and decoding settings Incorrect gamma or color range, persistent smearing, or large blocky color regions
Moonlight with Sunshine A host configured with Sunshine and a Deck running Moonlight HDR10 support, HEVC Main 10 encoding, host display or EDID, matching resolution, and Windows/game HDR calibration Washed-out HDR, scaling-related color artifacts, or HDR failing to engage

Check the app you launch on the Deck and the host software before changing anything. A fix documented for Steam Remote Play does not automatically apply to Moonlight, and a Moonlight HDR requirement does not explain every SDR image that looks gray.

Run the low-risk checks before changing calibration

Install current updates

  1. On the Deck, open Settings → System, check for SteamOS updates, install any available stable update, and restart when prompted.
  2. Open the Steam client on the host and install its pending client update. If the host uses Sunshine or the Deck uses Moonlight, update those applications through their normal release channels as well.
  3. Reconnect and test the same game, display mode and stream resolution. Do not change several variables at once; otherwise you will not know which change affected the image.

Valve’s SteamOS 3.5.8 Preview notes from December 1, 2023 explicitly said, “Fixed incorrect colors (gamma) when using Steam In-Home Streaming.” That is evidence that a gamma defect existed and was addressed in that release line, not proof that every current washed-out stream has the same cause. Valve’s September 2026 stable Steam client notes also report “Improved video color range” and added support for HDR streaming on Steam Deck OLED. Release notes document engineering changes, not a guaranteed result for every host GPU, game or Deck model.

Record the symptom precisely

Before troubleshooting, decide which description fits:

  • Dim or gray across the whole picture: often points toward HDR state, tone mapping, gamma or color-range handling.
  • Colors look correct in SDR but wrong in HDR: concentrate on HDR compatibility and calibration.
  • Fine detail smears during motion: check hardware decoding and host encoding in Steam Remote Play.
  • Large rectangular or blocky color patches: investigate the host encoder, especially when NVIDIA hardware encoding is involved.
  • The Deck’s local games also look wrong: inspect SteamOS display rendering before blaming the stream.

Use an SDR-versus-HDR comparison as your decision point

  1. Leave the game, host resolution and Deck brightness unchanged.
  2. Temporarily disable HDR on the host and in the streaming client.
  3. Reconnect and view the same scene, preferably one with white text, skin tones, gray shadows and bright highlights.
  4. Enable HDR again and repeat the comparison.

If SDR is normal and HDR is washed out, the comparison implicates the HDR path but does not identify the exact component at fault. Continue with the Moonlight/Sunshine HDR checks or the Steam HDR settings that apply to your route. If both modes look wrong, check SteamOS display rendering, the host’s color output and the game’s own calibration before treating HDR as the sole cause.

For Moonlight, the client HDR option must be enabled for an HDR stream. With it disabled, the stream is SDR even if Windows is displaying HDR. This distinction prevents a common misdiagnosis: changing HDR calibration while the client is not receiving HDR at all.

Moonlight and Sunshine: repair the HDR chain in order

Verify the prerequisites

Sunshine’s documentation requires a compatible Windows host GPU that can encode HEVC Main 10 for HDR. The host also needs an HDR-capable display or an EDID emulator that presents a compatible HDR display to Windows. Moonlight’s guide lists additional client-side requirements and labels HDR10 streaming as beta, with possible color and scaling artifacts.

Component What must be true for HDR What to do if it is not true
Host GPU and encoder HEVC Main 10 HDR encoding is supported Use SDR for a reliable comparison; HDR cannot be repaired by Deck color sliders when the encoder lacks the required format.
Windows display path Windows sees an HDR-capable display or a compatible EDID emulator Confirm the host display is recognized as HDR before connecting Moonlight.
Moonlight client HDR streaming is enabled in the client Enable the HDR option, then reconnect; otherwise the stream remains SDR.
Resolution Stream resolution matches the host display resolution when using HDR Test a matching resolution. Moonlight documents scaling artifacts when resolutions differ.
Host HDR state HDR is active in the state Moonlight expects at connection time If HDR was already on before connecting, toggle host HDR off and on, then reconnect.

Match the host and stream resolution

Set the Moonlight stream resolution to the host display’s active resolution for the HDR test. The Moonlight guide identifies scaling artifacts as a known issue when resolutions differ. A mismatch can make edges, gradients and color transitions appear wrong even when the HDR metadata and encoder are otherwise functioning. Once a matching-resolution test works, change one resolution at a time if you need a lower-bandwidth profile.

Re-trigger host HDR when it was already enabled

If Windows HDR was enabled before Moonlight connected, turn host HDR off, wait for the desktop to switch to SDR, turn HDR on again, and reconnect the stream. Moonlight’s guide notes that this toggle may be needed for the stream to enter HDR properly. It is a state-refresh step, not a calibration adjustment.

Calibrate Windows and the game for the Deck screen

  1. On the Windows host, run the Windows HDR Calibration app and create a profile while viewing the calibration patterns.
  2. Sunshine recommends streaming that calibration app to the client and saving a profile suited to the client display. Follow that recommendation rather than calibrating only for the host monitor.
  3. Open the game’s HDR settings while it is streamed and adjust its paper-white, peak-brightness or logo patterns according to the game’s instructions. Save the profile for the Deck display.
  4. Retest a dark scene and a bright scene after each calibration change.

Sunshine warns that some GPUs can deliver lower image quality or encoding performance in HDR than in SDR. If a properly configured HDR stream remains visibly worse than SDR, use SDR as the practical mode for that host rather than forcing HDR through an encoder that produces poorer output.

Steam Remote Play: separate color-range issues from codec artifacts

Check for gamma and color-range improvements first

After updating SteamOS and the Steam client, retest Remote Play before changing encoder settings. Valve’s historical SteamOS 3.5.8 Preview gamma fix and the September 2026 client note about improved video color range show that Steam’s streaming color pipeline has changed over time. They do not establish that a present-day dim image is a universal Steam defect, so keep the SDR/HDR comparison and local-display check in your diagnosis.

Fix smearing

Steam Support documents an NVIDIA encoder/decoder incompatibility that can produce persistent smearing. For that named artifact, try enabling hardware decoding on the client. If smearing persists, try disabling hardware encoding on the host and reconnect. Change one setting at a time and test motion-heavy scenes so you can identify which side of the connection helped.

Fix large blocky color areas

When large blocks of incorrect color are associated with NVIDIA hardware encoding, Steam Support recommends disabling hardware encoding on the host. This addresses the encoder failure mode described by Steam; it is not a general cure for a uniformly dim or desaturated picture. If disabling host encoding removes the blocks but reduces performance, compare the resulting latency and image quality before deciding whether to keep software encoding.

Check the Deck’s own display rendering

SteamOS 3.5 added Settings → Adjust Display Colors. The panel includes three rendering modes:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Native: uses the display’s native color rendering.
  • sRGB: Valve describes the new default rendering as emulating sRGB.
  • Boosted: increases perceived vibrancy but may clip gradients, according to Valve’s release note.

The same panel provides vibrancy and color-temperature adjustments. Use the preview or a known game image to compare modes, and return to a neutral setting while diagnosing the stream. These controls change how the Deck display renders the received image; they do not guarantee a correction for incorrect HDR tone mapping, metadata or color conversion upstream. A Boosted setting can make a stream look more saturated without restoring missing highlight detail, and a warm or cool temperature adjustment can hide a neutral-gray problem rather than solve it.

Use the local game as a control test

Run the same game locally on the Deck, using the same display mode and a scene with neutral grays and bright whites. This is a diagnostic question, not a claim about the result:

  • If the local game looks normal but the stream is washed out, concentrate on the host, encoder, HDR mode, client and network video path.
  • If the local game and stream look similarly dim, inspect SteamOS display rendering, color temperature, vibrancy and the game’s own HDR settings.
  • If only one streamed game is affected, compare that game’s HDR calibration and output mode with another title before changing global Deck settings.

Keep the test controlled. Changing the Deck color mode, host HDR state and game brightness simultaneously destroys the comparison you need.

Choose the troubleshooting branch by symptom and route

Symptom Route Next action What the action does not prove
Uniformly washed-out HDR Moonlight/Sunshine Confirm Moonlight HDR is enabled, match resolutions, refresh host HDR, then calibrate Windows and the game for the client display. It does not prove the Deck panel is defective or that every HDR host will fail.
Uniformly dim or gray SDR and HDR Either Check SteamOS Adjust Display Colors, host output and local-game appearance; keep HDR disabled during the comparison. It does not identify a single root cause without a controlled local test.
Smearing during motion Steam Remote Play Enable client hardware decoding; if needed, disable host hardware encoding. These settings target the documented NVIDIA incompatibility, not ordinary gamma differences.
Large blocky color regions Steam Remote Play Disable host hardware encoding when NVIDIA encoding is implicated. It does not establish that HDR calibration is wrong.
Color or scaling artifacts after changing resolution Moonlight/Sunshine Return the stream to the host’s display resolution and retest HDR. It does not show that a different cable, dock or router would fix tone mapping.

Only after color diagnosis, tune general stream quality

Steam Support recommends a wired network for the best streaming experience and suggests lowering game resolution or turning off V-sync as general quality steps. Apply these only after the color path is understood:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use wired networking where practical to reduce variable packet delivery.
  • Lower the game or stream resolution if the host cannot encode the selected format consistently.
  • Test with V-sync off when latency or frame pacing is the problem.

None of these is an established color-calibration fix. A faster network cannot correct an HDR transfer mismatch, and disabling V-sync will not repair incorrect gamma. They are performance and stability measures for a stream that is already producing the correct color format.

What not to buy as a first response

No cited evidence establishes a dock, cable, router, external display or calibration hardware as a general cure for washed-out Deck streaming. An HDR-capable display or EDID emulator can be a prerequisite for some Moonlight/Sunshine host configurations, but it is not a remedy for a color mismatch once the HDR chain is otherwise valid. Confirm the software path, mode and host requirements before spending money.

Deck model and host differences matter

Valve’s September 2026 client notes specifically mention HDR streaming support on Steam Deck OLED. That does not mean every OLED and non-OLED setup behaves identically, nor does it establish that an LCD Deck cannot display a particular stream. Record the Deck model, SteamOS version, host operating system, GPU and encoder, streaming app, game, resolution and HDR state when reporting a problem. Those variables determine which documented branch applies.

Moonlight’s HDR10 feature remains documented as beta, while Steam Remote Play has its own release history and NVIDIA-specific artifact guidance. Treat a successful result on one route as evidence about that route only; do not generalize it to the other client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A concise recovery checklist

  1. Write down whether the route is Steam Remote Play or Moonlight with Sunshine.
  2. Update SteamOS, the Steam client and the relevant streaming applications.
  3. Test the same scene with HDR disabled, then enabled.
  4. If only HDR fails on Moonlight/Sunshine, verify HEVC Main 10 encoding, an HDR-capable host display or EDID, Moonlight HDR, matching resolution and a host HDR toggle.
  5. Calibrate Windows HDR and the game for the Deck display when using Sunshine.
  6. If Remote Play smears, test client hardware decoding and then host hardware encoding.
  7. If Remote Play produces NVIDIA-related blocky color areas, disable host hardware encoding.
  8. Compare a local Deck game and inspect Settings → Adjust Display Colors without treating vibrancy as a guaranteed stream fix.
  9. Only after the image format is correct, address wired networking, resolution, V-sync and other general quality settings.

The practical goal is not to force every setup into HDR. It is to identify whether the defect is in HDR negotiation and calibration, Steam’s color pipeline, codec handling or the Deck’s own display rendering, then use the narrow fix documented for that branch.
