How to Fix Windows 10 22H2 Update Issues

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Windows 10 22H2 update failures usually come down to a blocked Windows Update service, damaged update files, a broken system component, insufficient storage, a network interruption, or an incompatible driver. Start by backing up your files, recording the exact error code and build, and running Windows 10’s built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Then work through storage and connection checks before using the administrator-level reset and repair commands below.

There is an important support limitation in 2026: Microsoft ended free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. Your computer may therefore need an eligible Extended Security Updates (ESU) arrangement rather than ordinary servicing. Confirm your edition and ESU eligibility before treating a failed 22H2 installation as a routine update problem.

Check your support status before troubleshooting

Windows 10 version 22H2 is the final Windows 10 feature version. Microsoft’s update-history guidance points readers to the Windows release health dashboard for current known issues, while Microsoft’s lifecycle statement says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a 22H2 device may only receive applicable updates through an ESU program or another supported servicing arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Microsoft page dated August 11, 2026 lists Windows 10 version 22H2 under Windows 10 ESU and identifies enablement package KB5015684 for updating to 22H2. That does not make every Windows 10 edition eligible. Check the edition shown under Settings > System > About, your organization’s licensing, and the ESU requirements that apply to your device before repeatedly retrying an update.

If Windows Update says the device is up to date but you expected an ESU patch, verify that the edition and enrollment match the applicable Microsoft requirements. A missing entitlement cannot be corrected by deleting the update cache or running repair commands.

1. Protect your files and record the failure

Microsoft recommends backing up personal files before applying update fixes. Copy documents, saved games, photos, browser data, and other irreplaceable files to an external drive or a trusted backup location. The folder resets and repair commands below are designed to preserve personal data, but a backup protects you if the underlying disk or Windows installation has a separate problem.

Before changing anything, write down:

  • The complete error code, including every letter and zero.
  • The update’s KB number, if Windows displays one.
  • Your Windows edition, such as Home or Pro.
  • The current OS build from Settings > System > About.
  • Whether the failure happens at download, installation, restart, 0 percent, or 100 percent.

These details determine whether the next step should target storage, connectivity, services, system files, or a driver. Keep screenshots or the exact text of any message; a percentage alone is not enough to identify the fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
  4. Select Windows Update and click Run the troubleshooter.
  5. Allow the checks and proposed repairs to finish.
  6. Restart the computer, even if the troubleshooter reports that it made no changes.
  7. Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Use the result as a first diagnostic, not as proof that the problem is solved. If the same code returns, continue with the code-specific and system-repair sections rather than repeatedly running the troubleshooter.

3. Remove the common blockers

Verify the internet connection

Use a stable connection and retry when other downloads are not consuming the link. Disconnect an unnecessary VPN temporarily and remove a metered-network restriction if your connection is marked metered. Reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then restart Windows Update. A connection that drops during download can leave an incomplete package that later fails during installation.

Check free storage

Microsoft’s upgrade guidance calls for at least 16 GB of free space on a 32-bit system and 20 GB on a 64-bit system. These figures describe free space required for the upgrade process, not the total capacity of the drive. Check the free-space figure in File Explorer > This PC and remove or move large personal files only after confirming that your backup is current.

On a device with a small internal drive, Microsoft says you may need to insert a USB drive during the upgrade. Use a drive with enough available capacity for the installer’s request, keep it connected when Windows asks for it, and follow the on-screen selection carefully so that you do not choose the wrong disk. The required capacity and formatting can vary by device, so verify the prompt shown by that particular PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse free space with total drive size. A 64-bit installation on a nearly full disk can fail even when the drive appears large enough overall. After freeing space, emptying temporary locations, or moving personal files, recheck the available amount and restart before selecting Check for updates.

Restart once after clearing a blocker

After correcting a network, VPN, metered-connection, or storage issue, restart Windows and select Check for updates again. A restart clears pending service state and is required after several of the repairs in this guide.

4. Match the error code to the likely cause

Error codes are more useful than the percentage shown on the progress screen. Use the first matching row below, then retry Windows Update. If more than one code appears, start with the code from the latest failure.

Error code Likely cause First response
0x800705b4 The installation took too long or was interrupted. Check the connection and free storage; review security software interference, then restart and retry.
0x80240034 An incomplete update or connection problem. Stabilize the network, restart, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter; reset the update cache if it returns.
0x800f0922 Insufficient space or a Windows component problem. Meet the 16 GB/20 GB free-space guidance for your system, then use the component-repair steps.
0x8007000E Insufficient disk space or component problems. Free space first; if storage is adequate, reset the update cache and repair the Windows image.
0x800F081F Corrupted or missing system files, or an incomplete download. Run DISM and SFC, then retry the update.
0x80073712 Corrupted or missing system files. Run DISM followed by SFC and try Windows Update again.
0x80070422 The Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. Set the service to Automatic and start it, then restart Windows Update.
0xC1900101 An incompatible driver. Inspect recently changed drivers and update or remove the conflicting driver before retrying.

The code does not guarantee a single cause, but it helps prioritize work. For example, do not start by replacing drivers when the message is 0x80070422, and do not keep resetting services when 0xC1900101 points to hardware compatibility. If no code is shown, begin with the troubleshooter, connection, and storage checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix error 0x80070422 by checking the service

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update in the service list.
  3. Open its properties, set Startup type to Automatic, and click Start if the service is stopped.
  4. Apply the change, close the window, restart the PC, and select Check for updates.

If organizational policy controls the service, you may not be able to change it locally; contact the administrator responsible for that computer.

Fix error 0xC1900101 by isolating a driver

Disconnect nonessential peripherals and think about drivers installed or updated immediately before the failure. In Device Manager, inspect devices with warning icons and the categories related to storage, graphics, network, and chipset hardware. Update or remove the suspected conflicting driver using the hardware maker’s supported package, then restart before trying the update again. Do not remove a device driver you need for network access unless you have another way to obtain the replacement.

5. Reset the Windows Update cache

Use this procedure when the troubleshooter, connection check, and storage check do not resolve an incomplete download or recurring update failure. It requires an administrator account. Renaming the folders makes Windows create fresh update data; it does not erase your personal documents.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator. Type Command Prompt in Start, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Run these commands one at a time, waiting for each command to finish:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
  1. Close Command Prompt and restart the PC.
  2. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If a stop command reports that a service is not running, continue with the remaining commands. If a rename fails because a file is in use, restart and repeat the procedure before attempting more invasive changes. A successful rename followed by a restart is the point at which Windows can create new update folders; do not delete the renamed folders while diagnosing the issue.

6. Repair the Windows image and protected files

Use an elevated Command Prompt for both commands. DISM repairs the Windows image; System File Checker (SFC) checks protected Windows files. Run them in this order because SFC can use the repaired image as its source.

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for DISM to reach completion. It can remain at one percentage for a while; do not close the window merely because progress appears slow.

  1. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows after SFC finishes.
  2. Return to Windows Update and try the update again.

If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message. Repeating the same command without addressing the reported condition is unlikely to change the result.

7. Check security software, disk health, and startup conflicts

Third-party security software

Microsoft notes that third-party antivirus or other security software can interfere with updates. Temporarily disable such software only through its documented controls, keep the PC disconnected from risky networks while protection is paused, and re-enable it immediately after the test. Windows Update repair steps do not replace antivirus protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the system drive

Drive errors can prevent files from being read or written correctly. In an elevated Command Prompt, run:

chkdsk /f C:

Windows may schedule the check for the next restart if the drive is in use. Accept the schedule, restart, and allow the scan to finish. Back up your files first, especially if the drive is making unusual noises or reporting other signs of failure.

Use a clean restart to isolate startup conflicts

Microsoft also recommends a clean restart when startup software or a driver may be interfering. Disable nonessential startup items and services using the Windows system-configuration tools, restart, and retry the update. If the update succeeds, restore startup items in groups until the conflicting program or driver is identified. Return the computer to its normal startup configuration after testing.

What to do when the update is stuck at 0% or 100%

Stuck at 0%

At 0 percent, first confirm that the PC is online, not constrained by a metered connection or unnecessary VPN, and has the required free space. Restart, run the troubleshooter, and check for updates again. If the same screen returns with an error such as 0x80240034, reset the update cache; if it returns with 0x800F081F or 0x80073712, run DISM and SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stuck at 100%

A display that remains at 100 percent does not identify the cause by itself. Allow the process time to finish, then restart only when Windows gives no further progress and the system is responsive. Record any code shown after the restart. Use the code table rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns, because an interruption during finalization can leave an incomplete update state.

When the manual fixes do not work

Stop repeating the same procedure when the identical code returns after the cache reset and DISM/SFC repairs. Recheck the recorded edition, build, KB number, storage architecture, and driver history. A 32-bit system has the 16 GB free-space requirement; a 64-bit system has the 20 GB requirement. A device that is outside ordinary Windows 10 servicing may fail because the update is not available to that edition or because ESU enrollment is incomplete, not because another cache reset is needed.

For a work-managed PC, involve the administrator before changing services, security software, drivers, or startup configuration. For a personal PC, preserve the error code and command output when seeking support. Those details allow the next technician to distinguish a service problem from a damaged Windows image, a failing disk, an incompatible driver, or an eligibility limitation.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, vulnerability checks, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and includes a free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription; results vary, it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why will my Windows 10 22H2 update not install?

Common causes include an interrupted connection, insufficient free space, a stopped Windows Update service, corrupted update or system files, third-party security interference, or an incompatible driver. Record the exact code and build, back up your files, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and then follow the matching code-specific step.

How do I fix Windows Update stuck at 0 percent?

Confirm a stable internet connection, disconnect an unnecessary VPN, remove a metered-network restriction, and verify at least 16 GB free on 32-bit Windows or 20 GB on 64-bit Windows. Restart, run the troubleshooter, and check again. Reset the update cache for repeated incomplete downloads or run DISM and SFC when file-corruption codes appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the update is stuck at 100 percent?

A 100-percent display does not identify the cause. If Windows remains responsive, allow finalization to continue and avoid repeated forced shutdowns. Restart only when there is no further progress, record any error code shown afterward, and use that code to choose the next remedy.

Can I update Windows 10 when the disk is nearly full?

The upgrade guidance calls for 16 GB of free space on a 32-bit system and 20 GB on a 64-bit system. Free space by moving personal files after confirming a backup. On a small-drive device, Windows may ask for a USB drive; keep it connected and select the correct disk when prompted.

What does error 0x800f0922 mean?

Microsoft associates 0x800f0922 with insufficient space or a Windows component problem. Meet the free-space requirement first, then reset the update cache and repair the Windows image with DISM followed by SFC if the error continues.

What does error 0xC1900101 mean?

It usually indicates an incompatible driver. Disconnect nonessential peripherals, inspect Device Manager and recently changed storage, graphics, network, or chipset drivers, then update or remove the suspected driver using a supported package before retrying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need administrator rights for every fix?

No. The built-in troubleshooter and storage or connection checks do not normally require elevation. Changing the Windows Update service, renaming update folders, running DISM, SFC, or CHKDSK generally requires an administrator account.

Are Windows 10 22H2 updates still free?

Microsoft says free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, verify your edition and eligibility for Extended Security Updates or another supported servicing arrangement before assuming an ordinary update should be available.

Should I reset the update cache before running DISM and SFC?

Match the action to the error. Repeated incomplete downloads such as 0x80240034 point first to connection checks and a cache reset. Codes such as 0x800F081F or 0x80073712 point to damaged or missing files, so run DISM and then SFC. Restart and retry Windows Update after either repair path.

What information should I give support if these steps fail?

Provide the complete error code, KB number, Windows edition, current OS build, whether the failure occurs during download or installation, available free space, driver changes, and the exact output from DISM, SFC, or CHKDSK. Also state whether the device is personally owned or managed by an organization and whether ESU eligibility has been confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Back up your files, capture the exact code and build, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and verify network access and free space. Use the error code to choose a service fix, cache reset, DISM/SFC repair, or driver investigation. If the failure persists, confirm Windows 10 ESU and edition eligibility before repeating repairs.
