The code 0X080070057 is not documented in the Microsoft guidance for Windows installation errors. It is probably a transcription error, most likely 0x80070057 or 0x80070570. Verify every character in Windows Update history, the installer dialog, Event Viewer, or the setup log before choosing a code-specific repair. These two documented errors have different meanings and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Verify the exact error and where installation stops
Windows error codes are hexadecimal, so a single extra or missing zero can send you to the wrong repair. Copy the complete value, including the 0x prefix, and note what Windows was doing when it failed:

Apply the low-risk checks first
1. Remove nonessential hardware
Shut down the computer and disconnect hardware that Windows does not need to install: printers, scanners, speakers, USB flash drives, external hard drives and similar accessories. If you are using a laptop, undock it. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display and the installation media or network connection required for the upgrade.
Reconnect devices after Windows finishes installing. A peripheral driver or a device that becomes unavailable during setup can interfere with an otherwise valid installation.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
In Windows 10, open Settings, choose Update & Security, select Troubleshoot, open Additional troubleshooters, and run Windows Update. Accept the recommended repair, restart, and try the download again. If your build presents a search box instead of the same menu, search Settings for “troubleshoot” and open the Windows Update troubleshooter.
3. Check permissions and security software
Use an administrator account for the repair. If a third-party antivirus, firewall, endpoint-control product or other security program is inspecting downloads, follow its documented procedure for temporarily pausing that inspection while you test the installation. Re-enable protection immediately after the test. Do not leave security software disabled as a permanent fix.
Also disconnect a VPN while testing. A VPN can change the network path or filtering rules used to retrieve update files. Retry on a stable connection, then reconnect the VPN after the installation succeeds.
4. Restart before repeating the attempt
A restart releases files held by update services and completes pending servicing operations. After restarting, retry the same installation once before moving to the code-specific procedures below.
If the verified code is 0x80070570
Microsoft defines 0x80070570 as ERROR_FILE_OR_DIRECTORY_CORRUPTED. During Windows Update, a damaged file in the download cache is a common place to start, but the same symptom can also come from a damaged component store, disk errors, security-software interference or an interrupted download.

Clear the Windows Update download cache
These commands remove only the downloaded update files; Windows can download a fresh copy. Open Command Prompt as administrator by typing cmd in Start, right-clicking Command Prompt, and choosing Run as administrator. Run each line in order:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
rd /s /q %windir%SoftwareDistributionDownload
net start bits
net start wuauserv
If a service reports that it was not running, continue with the remaining lines. If the deletion reports that files are in use, restart Windows and repeat the commands from an elevated Command Prompt. Restart the PC after the services are running, then try Windows Update again.
Repair the component store and protected system files
Use this sequence when clearing the cache does not resolve the error, or when the installer reports broader corruption. DISM repairs the Windows component store that servicing relies on. SFC checks protected Windows system files against that repaired store.

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Wait for each command to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window because progress appears to pause for a while. When both commands finish, restart Windows and retry the installation. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run the DISM command again, restart, and run SFC once more before investigating the setup log.

Microsoft associates 0x80070057 with corrupted files or incorrect configuration. Start with the general checks above, then run the DISM and SFC sequence. If the failure occurs during a Windows Update download, use the cache-clearing procedure in the previous section to reset the downloaded files rather than repeating a partially downloaded package.
Confirm that Windows Update can run
Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and check the Windows Update service. It should not be disabled. If you change its startup setting, apply the change, restart Windows, and test again. Avoid changing unrelated services; an overly broad service cleanup can create new installation failures.
Check storage and the system drive
Open Settings > System > Storage and make sure the system drive has enough free space for the download and installation. Remove or move files only after confirming that you have a backup. If Windows reports disk errors, use its built-in drive error-checking tools and address those errors before attempting another upgrade. A damaged drive can corrupt a newly downloaded package repeatedly, making software repairs appear ineffective.

| Situation | First priority | What to preserve or record | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update download fails | Run the troubleshooter, remove interference, clear the download cache, then repair components | Exact code, update history entry and restart status | Persistent failure after a fresh download or a service reset |
| In-place upgrade fails | Disconnect hardware, check security and VPN interference, then use DISM/SFC | Whether apps and personal files must remain, plus setuperr.log |
Use the setup log’s exact result code to select a matching procedure |
| Clean installation from media fails | Verify the media and installation context, check storage and disk integrity | Whether the target disk can be erased and whether a backup exists | Suspect media corruption, disk faults or hardware when the same failure repeats |
An in-place upgrade is the route to investigate when preserving installed applications and personal files matters. A clean installation is a different operation and can remove the existing Windows installation, so back up important data and confirm the intended disk before proceeding.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse logs when the repair sequence does not work
Read the Windows Setup error log
For an upgrade failure, search the computer for setuperr.log and open the copy created for the failed attempt. Record the exact hexadecimal result, the file or component named near the failure, and the time of the error. A setup log can distinguish a download problem from a driver, permissions, storage or servicing failure. Apply a procedure that matches that result instead of repeatedly running unrelated commands.
Separate software interference from disk or hardware faults
Retry after removing nonessential peripherals, disabling a VPN, and addressing third-party security inspection. If the same file-corruption code returns with a fresh download and repaired component store, check the system drive for errors and review available storage. Repeated corruption across different attempts is a reason to investigate the disk or installation media rather than deleting the same cache again.
What to do after Windows 10 installs
Microsoft states: “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” A successful repair therefore fixes the immediate installation problem but does not restore ongoing Windows 10 support. After the computer is stable, check whether it can move to a supported Windows release and make a migration plan that accounts for application compatibility, backups and hardware requirements.
If you are not ready to migrate, document the repaired code, the commands that worked and the setup log result. That record makes a future upgrade attempt faster and helps identify whether a later failure is the same problem or a new one.

- Copy the exact code; do not treat
0X080070057as a confirmed Microsoft error. - Record whether the failure happened during download, in-place upgrade or clean installation.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware and undock laptops.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Check administrator permissions, third-party security interference and VPN settings.
- For
0x80070570, stop Windows Update and BITS, remove the download cache, restart the services and reboot. - Run DISM first and SFC second, then restart.
- For
0x80070057, check configuration, the Windows Update service, storage and disk integrity. - When an upgrade still fails, inspect
setuperr.logand follow its exact result code.
There is no single universal fix for the mistyped code in the title. Verification is the important first step: once the real code and installation context are known, the cache, component-store, configuration, network and hardware checks can be applied in the right order.
