Error 0x80070422 on Windows 10 usually means that the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The first repair is to open the Services console, set Windows Update to Automatic, start it if necessary, restart the PC, and try Windows Update again. If that does not work, use the Windows Update troubleshooter, clear the update cache, and check whether security software is blocking the service. Upgrade and installation failures can require a Windows Update component reset or installation media.

What Windows 10 error 0x80070422 means

Microsoft Support defines 0x80070422 as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” Microsoft Learn classifies the underlying Windows error as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In practical terms, Windows Update cannot perform its work because the service responsible for checking, downloading, or installing updates is not running.

The code may appear when you select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, while installing a cumulative update, or during a Windows 10 upgrade. The extra zero or extra digit sometimes seen in searches—such as “0X800704022”—is generally a typing error for 0x80070422. Use the eight-character code shown in Windows when checking the result.

This is normally a service-configuration problem, not proof that Windows is infected or that your files are damaged. A stopped service can result from a deliberate configuration change, software interference, an interrupted update, or a damaged update cache. The service repair below is reversible and should be attempted before more invasive recovery work.

Before changing Windows Update

Save open work and make sure the computer is connected to a reliable network. If the PC is managed by an employer or school, update policies may be controlled centrally; contact the administrator before changing service settings. You should also note whether the code appears during ordinary update checking or only during an upgrade or installation, because the later case has additional escalation steps.

  • Use an account that can approve administrator prompts. Changing a Windows service or deleting files from the Windows update cache normally requires elevation.
  • Restart once before troubleshooting if the computer has just completed an update, rollback, or forced shutdown.
  • Record the exact wording and code. Microsoft’s documented wording is “0x80070422 | Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.”

Primary fix: enable and start the Windows Update service

This is the documented first-line repair and resolves the problem when the service is simply disabled or stopped.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type services.msc, then press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
  3. In the Services list, find Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the W section is usually quickest.
  4. Double-click Windows Update to open its Properties window.
  5. Open the Startup type menu and select Automatic.
  6. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
  7. Select Apply, then OK to close the Properties window.
  8. Close the Services console and restart the computer.
  9. After Windows starts again, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the service was already running, still confirm that its Startup type is Automatic, apply the setting, restart, and test Windows Update. A service can be running for the current session yet configured not to start normally after a reboot.

If Windows will not let you start the service

Read the message shown in the Services window rather than repeatedly clicking Start. Confirm that you opened the console with an administrator account, then restart Windows and try once more. If the service immediately stops again, continue with the troubleshooter and cache-reset sections instead of changing unrelated services. Do not delete random files from C:Windows; the documented cache procedure targets only the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

When setting the service to Automatic does not clear the code, Microsoft recommends the Windows Update troubleshooter. It checks common update configuration problems and presents repairs that you can approve.

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Additional troubleshooters if that link is shown.
  4. Choose Windows Update, then select Run the troubleshooter.
  5. Follow each recommendation, allowing the tool to apply a change when you understand what it proposes.
  6. Restart Windows if requested, then return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Windows 10 editions and builds can display slightly different Settings labels. If you do not see the troubleshooter in the first location, use the Settings search box for troubleshoot and open the Windows Update troubleshooter from the result.

Reset the Windows Update cache

A damaged or incomplete download in the update cache can keep Windows Update from progressing even after the service is enabled. Microsoft documents clearing the cache by stopping Windows Update, deleting the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder, starting the service again, and retrying the update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  4. Delete the contents of that folder. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  6. Restart the PC, open Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Windows may require administrator approval when you delete the cache contents. If a file is in use, verify that Windows Update shows Stopped, close any File Explorer window displaying the folder, and try again after a restart. Clearing this cache removes downloaded update data; Windows can download the required files again. It does not by itself repair a disabled service, so complete the service procedure as well.

Check antivirus and firewall interference

Microsoft lists third-party antivirus and firewall software as possible causes of update failures. Security products can block a service, network connection, or update process after a policy change or program update.

  • Open the security product’s settings and look for blocked applications, service restrictions, network rules, or pending update-related alerts.
  • Temporarily pause a third-party firewall or web-filtering feature only if you understand the risk and can restore it immediately. Keep Windows security protections active where possible.
  • Run Windows Update while the suspected feature is paused. If the error disappears, re-enable protection and create the narrowest permitted exception according to that product’s documentation.
  • If pausing the product makes no difference, turn it back on and continue with the Microsoft troubleshooting steps.

Do not leave a firewall or antivirus feature disabled as a permanent workaround. The 0x80070422 code identifies a stopped or disabled Windows Update service; it does not establish that security software is the cause on every PC.

When 0x80070422 appears during an upgrade or installation

An upgrade or installation can expose the same service problem before the normal Windows Update screen is available. Microsoft recommends ensuring Windows Update is enabled and started, resetting Windows Update components, and checking for software or permissions interference.

Retry the service repair in the existing Windows installation

Start with the Services procedure in this article, restart the PC, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. If the installer was launched from Windows, retry it only after the service starts successfully. This separates a service failure from a problem in the upgrade workflow.

Reset Windows Update components

Microsoft identifies resetting Windows Update components as an escalation for upgrade and installation cases. The exact reset method can vary by Windows 10 build and the failure being investigated. Use Microsoft’s current instructions for the affected build, and make sure the command prompt or recovery environment is opened with administrator rights when the instructions require it. Do not substitute unrelated service changes or delete folders beyond the documented cache contents.

Check permissions and interfering software

Upgrade programs need permission to change system files and services. Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts, disconnect unnecessary system-management utilities, and review third-party firewall or antivirus blocks. If the computer is managed by an organization, its policy may prevent service changes; the administrator must handle that case.

Use installation or recovery media only when appropriate

A Windows installation USB can provide installation or recovery media for an escalation or reinstall workflow. The USB drive is an enabling accessory; it does not repair a disabled Windows Update service by itself. Before using recovery or reinstall options, read the screen carefully and back up important personal files. Whether applications and files are preserved depends on the specific workflow selected, so do not assume that every media-based option is non-destructive.

Choosing the next escalation

Use the least invasive path that matches the symptom. The table distinguishes the documented options without implying that any one of them is guaranteed to work.

Path Invasiveness Apps and personal files Administrator access Best fit
Enable Windows Update service Low; changes one service setting Preserved; no file removal is part of the procedure Usually required to change the service 0x80070422 in ordinary Windows Update use
Clear SoftwareDistribution contents Moderate; removes downloaded update-cache data Personal files and installed apps are not targeted; the exact effect on a pending update is not stated Usually required to stop the service and delete contents Service is enabled but updates still fail or a cache is suspected
Reset Windows Update components Moderate to high; broader servicing changes Not stated; follow Microsoft’s instructions for the specific case Required for the administrative steps Upgrade or installation failure after basic repairs
Installation or recovery USB High; can lead to repair, recovery, or reinstall choices Depends on the selected workflow; not guaranteed to preserve apps Required for many recovery actions Existing Windows cannot complete servicing or start normally

Windows 10 support status and upgrading to Windows 11

Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Windows 10 devices continue to run, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. This lifecycle change does not cause 0x80070422, and enabling the Windows Update service remains the correct repair for a service-disabled message on an existing Windows 10 installation.

If you decide to upgrade, verify that the computer meets Windows 11 hardware and edition requirements before starting. A failed upgrade should not be used as a reason to delete personal data or force a reinstall. First repair the Windows Update service, then use the documented component-reset or installation-media path if the upgrade still fails.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Confirm the code. Make sure the message is 0x80070422 and refers to Windows Update.
  2. Repair the service. Set Windows Update to Automatic, start it, apply the change, restart, and check for updates.
  3. Run the troubleshooter. Apply its recommendations and retry after restarting.
  4. Clear the cache. Stop Windows Update, delete the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service, restart, and retry.
  5. Check interference. Review third-party antivirus and firewall blocks, then restore protection after testing.
  6. Escalate upgrade cases. Reset Windows Update components and verify permissions when the error occurs during an upgrade or installation.
  7. Use media carefully. Treat a Windows installation USB as recovery or installation media, not as an automatic repair for the service.

If the code returns after every step, document when it appears, which service state you observed, and any troubleshooter result before seeking Microsoft or organizational support. Those details help distinguish a recurring service-policy problem from a cache or upgrade-specific failure.
