Windows 10 error 0x8007045d is an I/O device error: Windows could not complete a read or write request. The form 08007045d is usually a typographical version of that hexadecimal code, with the 0x prefix missing. Protect your files first, isolate the failing drive or connection, then check the file system and Windows components. If the error follows one disk or Windows reports a critical storage warning, stop repeated repairs and plan hardware or professional recovery.
What Windows 10 error 0x8007045d means
Microsoft identifies 0x8007045d as ERROR_IO_DEVICE, defined as “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” It is a broad input/output failure, not a diagnosis of one specific Windows bug.

The code can appear while Windows is installing or updating, while files are copied between drives, or during a backup. It does not by itself prove that Windows system files are corrupted, and it cannot tell you whether the failed part is the disk, cable, USB port, enclosure, controller, or removable media.

If you saw 08007045d in an article, log, or message, read it as the likely hexadecimal code 0x8007045d. The extra or missing characters are a formatting error, not a different Windows error.

Decide how risky the next step is
Your first action depends on where the error occurs and whether the affected data exists elsewhere. Use this triage before running a repair command.
| What you observe | Safest next move | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| The source drive still opens and important files are not backed up | Copy the most valuable files to a separate USB drive or other storage before testing | Repair attempts can add reads and writes to an unstable device |
| The error occurs only with one external drive | Test a different USB port, cable, enclosure, or computer | The device, connection, or media may be the failing part |
| The error occurs on the Windows system volume | Back up first, then run CHKDSK and Windows component checks | The file system or Windows components may need repair, but storage hardware is still possible |
| The error appears during setup or Windows Update | Remove nonessential hardware, check free space, and run the Windows Update troubleshooter | Peripheral conflicts, incompatible drivers, software, or storage access can interrupt setup |
| Windows reports media errors, an internal NVM error, or a read-only drive | Back up immediately and contact support or a storage professional | A critical storage-health condition requires escalation |
Protect data before troubleshooting
Copy irreplaceable files first
Insert a separate USB drive and copy documents, photos, saved games, project files, and other irreplaceable data. Start with the smallest set of files you cannot replace. If a particular folder repeatedly produces the error, do not keep retrying it indefinitely; move on to other critical data and preserve the failing device for diagnosis.
Use a different physical destination from the source. Copying files to another folder on the same failing disk is not a backup. An external SSD or hard drive can provide more capacity when a USB flash drive is too small, but buying new storage does not repair the error; it only gives you a safer destination for a backup.

Reduce writes to an unstable source
A failing drive can become less readable as it is used. Avoid disk cleanup, defragmentation, large downloads, game installations, and repeated scans until valuable files are protected. If Windows cannot read the files at all, skip directly to the recovery section below rather than repeatedly forcing the device to retry.
Fix 0x8007045d in a safe order
1. Disconnect nonessential hardware
- Shut down applications that are using the affected drive.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, printers, scanners, card readers, and external drives.
- Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the storage needed for the operation.
- Retry the update, installation, copy, or backup.
Microsoft specifically recommends removing nonessential hardware during installation troubleshooting. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time and retry after each connection. The device that brings the error back is a useful lead, although the code alone still cannot prove which component has failed.

2. Test the physical connection
When one external drive is involved, change one variable at a time:
- Move the drive to a different USB port. A port directly on the computer is preferable to a hub for this test.
- Replace the USB cable with a known-good cable of the correct type.
- If the drive uses a removable enclosure, test another compatible enclosure or adapter.
- Connect the drive to another computer and try a small, noncritical file operation.
If the same device fails on multiple computers and with multiple cables, the evidence points more strongly toward the drive or its media. If only one computer or port fails, the host port, controller, or local software remains a possibility.
3. Check free space and the Windows Update path
For an update or installation failure, confirm that the Windows system volume has enough free space for the operation. Remove only files you can safely identify, and do not delete personal data to make room.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update. Apply its suggested repair, restart Windows if requested, and retry with nonessential hardware still disconnected.
Installation failures can also involve incompatible drivers or security software. If the problem began immediately after adding a device or driver, disconnect that device and use the manufacturer’s supported driver or installation guidance. Do not disable security protections permanently; if a security product is identified as incompatible by the installer, follow its documented temporary-removal procedure and restore protection afterward.

4. Check the affected volume with CHKDSK
Run this step only after protecting important data as far as possible. CHKDSK checks the file system and, with the repair switch, corrects logical errors Windows can repair.
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter the command below, replacing
C:with the affected drive letter when necessary:
chkdsk /f C:
If the volume is in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y when prompted, close your work, and restart. Let verification and repair finish; interrupting it can leave the file-system operation incomplete.
CHKDSK addresses file-system consistency. It cannot repair a physically failing disk, bad cable, failing USB bridge, or damaged flash memory. If it reports repeated read errors or the same I/O code returns immediately, stop treating the issue as a simple directory problem and move to storage-health or recovery escalation.
5. Repair Windows components with DISM, then SFC
If the error occurs on the system volume or during Windows servicing, check Windows component integrity after CHKDSK completes.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again by choosing Run as administrator.
- Run Deployment Image Servicing and Management:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to complete. It supplies repair files for the Windows component store.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows when the command finishes, then retry the original operation. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components; they do not replace a failing disk or recover files that the storage device can no longer read.

6. Retry with a minimal configuration
After restarting, repeat the original task with only the required hardware connected. Note exactly what fails:
- For a file copy, identify whether every file fails or only files from one folder or device.
- For Windows Update, note the update name and whether the failure returns at the same stage.
- For installation media, recreate or replace the media if the same installer fails on more than one computer, while keeping the original media aside for comparison.
- For a backup, test a small set of files and verify that the destination drive remains connected throughout the operation.
A failure that follows one external device is materially different from a failure that affects unrelated drives and the system volume. Record the pattern before replacing hardware or repeating repairs.

When copying files to or from a USB drive
Start with the cable, port, enclosure, and second-computer tests. If only one file or folder fails, the source media may contain an unreadable area. Copy the files that still work, then avoid repeated attempts on the failing area. If the drive becomes read-only or disconnects, treat that as a storage-health warning rather than a normal copy error.
When Windows installation stops
Disconnect every nonessential peripheral, check available space, and retry with the simplest hardware configuration. If the installer fails on one computer but succeeds on another using the same media, investigate the original computer’s storage path, drivers, or controller. If it fails consistently with the same media on multiple computers, replace the installation media and preserve any files on the target drive before further attempts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen Windows Update fails
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, confirm free space, and temporarily remove external devices that are not required. Incompatible drivers or security software can interfere with servicing. If the error is accompanied by disk warnings or appears during unrelated disk operations too, prioritize storage diagnosis over repeatedly downloading the update.

When a backup fails
Protect the most important files with a separate manual copy first. Try another destination drive and cable, and avoid placing the backup on the same physical disk as the source. A backup failure that follows the source disk is more concerning than one isolated to a single destination device, while a destination that repeatedly disconnects should be replaced before trusting it with a full backup.
What to do when files are already inaccessible
Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery tool can attempt recovery from internal drives, external drives, and USB devices. Minimize or stop normal computer use before attempting recovery: deleted data may still occupy recoverable space, and new writes can overwrite it.
Do not use recovery software as a repair for a physically failing device. Repeatedly scanning a drive that is making read errors, disconnecting, or reporting critical health warnings can reduce the chance of a successful recovery. If reads continue to fail, disconnect the device and contact a professional data-recovery service. Keep any recovered files on a different, healthy drive.

Microsoft advises backing up data and contacting support when Windows reports a critical storage warning such as media errors, an internal NVM error, or a read-only drive. These warnings are more specific than 0x8007045d and should take priority over another round of CHKDSK or component repairs.
- Escalate for hardware diagnosis when the same drive fails across computers, ports, and cables.
- Escalate for professional recovery when files are irreplaceable and reads are repeatedly failing.
- Plan replacement when the device becomes read-only, disappears during transfers, or produces recurring storage-health warnings.
- Keep the original failing drive unchanged if a recovery specialist will examine it; do not initialize, format, or repeatedly scan it.
The error code does not provide a failure rate or guarantee that a drive is dying. It is the pattern of failures, Windows’ storage-health messages, and the result of connection tests that determine the next decision.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. This does not change the meaning of 0x8007045d, but it matters when deciding whether to keep troubleshooting an installation or move to a supported Windows release and compatible hardware.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
If you want an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings that affect CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and keep an app-crash log. It offers a free trial by category for at least two days, then requires a subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary.
Bottom line
Correctly read, 0x8007045d means Windows could not complete an I/O request. Back up valuable data, remove nonessential hardware, test the physical connection, run CHKDSK, then run DISM followed by SFC. If the error remains tied to one device or appears with critical storage warnings, stop repeated repairs and move to hardware replacement or professional data recovery.
