Start by copying the code exactly. Windows 10 error 0x0070057 has been reported in Windows Update alongside corrupt system files or a damaged Windows Update cache. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter first. If that does not clear the failure, reset the update cache and services, repair the Windows image with DISM and SFC, then check security software, disk health, startup conflicts, firmware, drivers and available storage.
Do not automatically treat 0x0070057 as 0x80070057. The strings differ in both a digit and its position. Microsoft documents 0x80070057 separately; the available Microsoft Q&A report for 0x0070057 concerns Windows Update. The steps below are therefore aimed at a Windows Update occurrence, not every application or sign-in error that might display a similar-looking number.

What error 0x0070057 means on Windows 10
The exact string 0x0070057 appears in a Microsoft Q&A report about Windows Update. That report identifies two practical possibilities: protected Windows files may be corrupt, or the Windows Update SoftwareDistribution folder may contain damaged cache data. Those are causes to test, not proof that every machine showing the code has the same fault.
Context matters. A code shown while downloading or installing an update points toward the Windows Update service and its cache. A code shown during a feature upgrade, Microsoft 365 sign-in or another program may require a different diagnosis. Before changing anything, record the complete message, the screen where it appeared and what action immediately preceded it.

Before changing Windows Update
Confirm the exact code
- Use a phone photo or copy and paste the complete message, including every leading zero and the
0xprefix. - Write down whether the failure appeared under Windows Update, during an upgrade, at sign-in or inside another application.
- Note whether the error returns immediately, after a download, or after a restart. That timing helps distinguish a local cache problem from a service, disk or compatibility conflict.
Protect your files and make the repair reversible
Back up personal files before advanced repairs. Renaming update folders, uninstalling security software or checking a disk changes the system state even when the procedure is routine. Keep installation media or recovery options available if the computer becomes unbootable, and connect the PC to reliable power while repairs and updates run.
Check basic conditions
- Make sure the computer can reach the internet and is not being interrupted by a captive portal or unstable connection.
- Check that the Windows system drive has enough free space for the pending update.
- If a third-party antivirus or security suite is installed, record its name and how to reinstall it before removing it for a test.
Step 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Use the built-in diagnostic before running commands. Microsoft says the troubleshooter can run diagnostics and attempt repairs, and it is the least invasive option in this sequence.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow the checks and any proposed repair to finish. Follow any on-screen instruction to apply a change.
- Restart the PC even if the troubleshooter reports that it made no change.
- After signing in again, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
If the update installs, the original failure was likely a transient diagnostic or configuration problem. If the same code returns, continue without repeatedly rerunning the troubleshooter; the next step refreshes the update data it cannot repair.

Step 2: Reset the Windows Update cache and services
A damaged SoftwareDistribution or catroot2 folder can prevent Windows Update from processing new packages. The following Microsoft-documented sequence stops the update services, renames the folders and starts the services again. Renaming rather than deleting leaves the old folders available as a rollback reference while Windows creates fresh cache data.
Run the commands from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter each command separately and wait for it to finish before entering the next one:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
- Close Command Prompt and restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
What each part does
| Action | Purpose | Change risk and reversibility |
|---|---|---|
| Stop BITS | Releases files being transferred by the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. | Temporary service stop; the command starts it again. |
| Stop Windows Update | Releases files held by the Windows Update service. | Temporary service stop; the command starts it again. |
Rename SoftwareDistribution |
Moves the update download and working cache out of the way so Windows can create a fresh one. | Reversible while the renamed folder remains. |
Rename catroot2 |
Refreshes another update-related catalog store. | Reversible while the renamed folder remains. |
| Start BITS and Windows Update | Restores the services needed to download and install updates. | Returns the services to operation. |
If a rename command reports that a folder is in use, check that both stop commands completed, close other update or installer windows, and run the commands again from an administrator Command Prompt. Do not delete the old folders while diagnosing the problem; keeping the renamed copies preserves a rollback reference.
Step 3: Repair the Windows image and protected files
When the cache reset does not help, repair the component store and protected system files. Microsoft’s sequence is DISM first, followed by System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as a source; SFC then checks protected files against that repaired image.
- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to complete:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Let the scan reach completion, then restart the PC.
- Open Windows Update and select Check for updates again.
Do not close the Command Prompt simply because progress appears to pause. DISM and SFC can take time, and interrupting either command leaves the repair incomplete. If the commands finish but the update still fails, move to conflict and hardware checks rather than repeating scans indefinitely.

Test third-party antivirus or security suites
Microsoft notes that incompatible third-party antivirus or security software can interfere with updating. Back up your files and make sure you have the installer or account details needed to restore protection. Temporarily uninstall the third-party suite only as a diagnostic, restart, and try Windows Update. Reinstall it after the update test, whether or not the test resolves the error. Windows’ built-in protection can cover the gap during the short test, but a removal is not a permanent security recommendation.
Use a clean restart to isolate startup programs
A clean restart loads Windows with a reduced set of startup services so you can determine whether another program is locking files or interfering with the update. Record which services or startup items you change, perform the update check, and restore the normal startup configuration after the test. If the error disappears only in the clean state, re-enable items in groups until the conflicting software is identified.
Step 5: Check storage, disk, firmware and drivers
Test the system disk when errors are suspected
Disk faults can corrupt update downloads or prevent Windows from replacing protected files. After backing up important data, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

chkdsk /f C:
Follow any instruction to schedule the check for the next restart, then allow it to finish. A disk check addresses file-system errors; it does not repair every physical drive failure. If the check reports continuing problems, protect your data and investigate the drive before attempting repeated updates.

Check the computer manufacturer’s support information for BIOS or firmware updates that apply to your exact model, and check suspect device drivers. Firmware work has model-specific risks, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions and keep the computer on stable power. A driver problem is more likely when the update failure is accompanied by device instability, crashes or a recent hardware change; it is not established as the cause of every 0x0070057 occurrence.
Recheck free space
Windows Update needs room to stage downloads and temporary installation files. Remove or move personal files only after backing them up, empty no longer needed temporary data using Windows’ own storage tools, and retry the update. Freeing space is a prerequisite check, not evidence that deleting arbitrary files will repair the error.

| Option | Privilege | Addresses | Invasiveness and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Usually a standard user can launch it; Windows may request elevation for a repair. | Common diagnostic and configuration problems. | Lowest impact; restart and rerun the update. |
| Cache and service reset | Administrator | Corrupt SoftwareDistribution or catroot2 data and stuck BITS or Windows Update activity. |
Moderate; services are stopped and folders renamed, with the old folders retained. |
| DISM followed by SFC | Administrator | Windows image corruption and protected system-file corruption. | Moderate; repairs system components and can take time, but does not remove personal files. |
| Third-party security removal test | Administrator | Software compatibility or file-locking conflicts. | Higher; protection is uninstalled temporarily and must be restored. |
chkdsk /f C: |
Administrator | File-system errors on the Windows volume. | Higher; may require a reboot and should follow a backup. |
| Clean restart, firmware or driver investigation | Varies; firmware and driver tools commonly require administrator access. | Startup conflicts or hardware-software compatibility issues. | Model- and system-dependent; document every change and restore normal settings afterward. |
How to interpret the result
The update works after the troubleshooter
Leave the repaired settings in place, restart once more if Windows requests it, and verify the update history. No cache reset or system-file repair is needed when the built-in diagnostic already solved the problem.
The update works after the cache reset
The old update working data was a plausible blocker. Keep the renamed folders until the computer has completed the update and restarted normally. Once you are confident the system is stable and no rollback is needed, Windows’ newly created cache can be used instead of the old copies.

That result makes protected-file corruption less likely, but it does not rule out a disk fault, security-suite conflict, insufficient space or a broader servicing issue. Continue with the checks above and record which step changed the behavior.
The code appears outside Windows Update
The available evidence does not establish that the Windows Update explanation applies to an error shown by another program. Recheck the exact string and investigate the product or sign-in flow that displayed it rather than applying update-cache commands automatically.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025
Microsoft’s lifecycle notice states that after October 14, 2025, it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. This lifecycle change is separate from the local diagnosis of 0x0070057.
On a Windows 10 computer after that date, a successful cache or file repair cannot restore a servicing program that Microsoft no longer supplies for free. If the machine still meets the requirements, plan a supported Windows version or another supported operating-system path. If you remain on Windows 10, distinguish an update that fails because of local corruption from an update that is simply no longer offered under the retired support policy.

Quick Recap
When to stop troubleshooting locally
- Stop and protect your data if
chkdskreports continuing disk problems, the drive makes unusual noises, or files become inaccessible. - Stop before a firmware update if you cannot identify the exact computer model or stable manufacturer instructions.
- Do not keep uninstalling security software repeatedly; restore protection and seek help if the test does not isolate the cause.
- Escalate with the exact code, the context in which it appeared, the Windows edition, the update name, and the commands already completed. That record prevents support from repeating destructive steps.
