How to Fix Windows 11 Update Not Showing: A Complete Troubleshooting Guide

If Windows 11 says you’re up to date but you expected an update, start with Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, restart the PC, and check again. A missing update is not automatically a fault: Microsoft releases updates in stages and can temporarily hold an update when compatibility data shows that a device, driver, application, or configuration needs more time.

If repeated checks still show nothing, work through the checks below in order. They separate a normal staged rollout from local problems involving storage, connectivity, services, update-cache files, permissions, drivers, or damaged Windows components.

Why a Windows 11 update may not be showing

Windows Update does not publish every update to every computer simultaneously. Microsoft manages rollouts for readiness and compatibility, so two compatible-looking PCs can receive the same feature update on different days or weeks. A safeguard hold can also delay an update while Microsoft investigates a known interaction with particular hardware, drivers, applications, or settings.

There are two broad possibilities:

  • Normal rollout timing: Windows Update is working, but the update has not been offered to your device yet.
  • A local detection problem: the PC cannot scan correctly because of network access, a VPN, security software, insufficient storage, stopped services, damaged cache files, administrator permissions, incompatible drivers, or corrupted system files.

First determine whether you are waiting for a routine quality update or a larger feature update. That distinction determines the safest next step.

Quality update Regular security, reliability, and bug-fix servicing Use Windows Update in Settings Keep troubleshooting Windows Update; the Update Assistant is intended for feature updates
Feature update A new Windows 11 release with substantial changes Check Windows Update and wait if rollout is staged Use Windows Update Assistant on a compatible x86 or x64 PC

Do not assume that a missing feature update means the PC is broken. If Windows Update scans normally and reports that the device is current, waiting can be the correct result. The repair steps are for cases where the scan fails, stays unchanged after repeated checks, or the device clearly meets the requirements for an update that is being offered elsewhere.

Identify what Windows is currently running

Check the installed build

Press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows version and OS build shown in the dialog. This tells you whether you are missing a feature release or only a smaller servicing update. It also gives you a precise version to report if you need support.

Check the system architecture

For a possible manual feature upgrade, open Start > Settings > System > About and look at System type. The Windows Update Assistant supports compatible x86 and x64 PCs. It does not run on ARM-based PCs, so an ARM device must use the normal Windows Update path.

Review update history

Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Look for recent failed installations, repeated retries, or an update that installed successfully but did not change the build shown by winver. A history full of failures points to a local repair problem; an empty or normal history with no offered update is more consistent with staged availability.

Step 1: Check manually, then restart

  1. Save your work and connect the PC to a reliable power source.
  2. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates and leave the window open while Windows completes the scan.
  4. If no update appears, restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart.
  5. After signing in, return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates again.

A restart clears temporary servicing states and ensures that a pending reboot is not preventing another scan. If the same result appears after the second check and Windows reports no error, continue with the troubleshooter rather than repeatedly pressing the button.

Step 2: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Microsoft provides an automated troubleshooter that diagnoses and attempts to fix many common update problems.

Use Get Help

  1. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
  2. Search for Windows Update troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the prompts and allow the app to apply recommended repairs.
  4. Restart the PC when it finishes.
  5. Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Use the Settings troubleshooter

If you prefer the system settings route, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update, select Run, complete the prompts, restart, and check Windows Update again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get Help may report that it made no changes. That does not prove the update is unavailable; it means the automated checks did not identify a repair it could apply. Continue with the basic blocker checks below.

Step 3: Remove common blockers

Confirm internet access

Open a few ordinary websites in a browser and, if possible, test the PC on another trusted network. A connection can appear usable while Windows Update traffic is being interrupted. If the connection drops during a scan, finish troubleshooting the network before attempting the update again.

Disconnect a VPN temporarily

Quit the VPN application or disconnect its tunnel, then restart the update scan. VPN routing or filtering can prevent Windows from reaching update services. Reconnect it after testing; do not leave security protections disabled permanently.

Consider third-party security software

Security suites can interfere with update services or the files they download. Check the product’s documented update-exclusion or troubleshooting guidance. If you temporarily pause a protection feature for a controlled test, disconnect from untrusted networks, re-enable protection immediately afterward, and run a fresh scan. Windows Update problems do not by themselves show that the PC is infected.

Free enough disk space

An upgrade cannot stage files if the system drive is nearly full. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance lists 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. Microsoft does not state a publication year for those figures, so treat them as the documented minimums in that guidance, not a guarantee that every upgrade will need exactly that amount.

Check space in Start > Settings > System > Storage. Remove or move large personal files, empty the Recycle Bin, and uninstall applications you no longer need. If Windows offers temporary-storage cleanup, review the categories before confirming; do not delete personal files you still need. If the upgrade still cannot fit, Microsoft’s guidance indicates that temporary USB storage may be used during an upgrade.

Use an administrator account

Some repairs and service changes require administrator permissions. If the account is standard, sign in with an administrator account or provide administrator credentials when Windows requests them. Do not change permissions randomly: an update can fail if system folders or services have been given unusual restrictions.

Step 4: Check Windows Update services

Windows Update depends on background services. If a required service is stopped or repeatedly fails, Settings may show no available update or may remain stuck while checking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update. Its status should be running when Windows is checking for updates. If it is stopped, right-click it, choose Start, and try the scan again.
  3. Also check Background Intelligent Transfer Service. This service transfers update files; start it if it is stopped and its startup settings allow it to run.
  4. Close the Services window, restart Windows, and select Check for updates.

If a service immediately stops again, note the exact error message. Repeated service failures are a reason to use the cache-reset procedure or the dedicated Microsoft troubleshooter rather than repeatedly forcing the service to start.

Step 5: Reset the Windows Update cache

Damaged or incomplete files in the update cache can prevent Windows from detecting or downloading an update. Microsoft’s reset procedure stops the update service, clears the files inside C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, starts the service again, restarts the PC, and checks for updates.

Safer graphical procedure

  1. Back up important personal files before changing service data.
  2. Open services.msc as an administrator.
  3. Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop.
  4. Open File Explorer and enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar.
  5. Delete the contents of that folder, not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped.
  6. Start Windows Update again in Services.
  7. Restart the PC and run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

Windows recreates the cache as it scans. The first scan after a reset can take longer because update metadata must be downloaded again. If you cannot stop the service, cannot delete the files, or see access-denied errors, stop at this point and use the dedicated troubleshooter or an administrator-assisted repair instead of changing ownership of system folders.

Step 6: Repair corrupted system files

Corrupted Windows system files can block update detection or installation. Before running command-line repairs, save open work and use an administrator account. Open Start, search for Terminal or Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.

  1. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and wait for it to complete. Keep the window open even if progress pauses.
  2. When DISM finishes, run sfc /scannow.
  3. Restart Windows after both commands finish.
  4. Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

These commands may report that no integrity violations were found, that damaged files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Record the result. If repairs fail repeatedly, do not delete random files from the Windows directory; use Microsoft’s dedicated Windows Update troubleshooter or professional support with the exact error text.

Step 7: Check drivers and device compatibility

Microsoft can hold an update when a driver or hardware combination is not ready. This is different from a failed local scan: Windows may be functioning normally while the feature update is intentionally withheld.

  • Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, and external hardware, then restart and check again.
  • Open Device Manager and look for devices with warning icons. Resolve those issues through the device manufacturer’s official support channel.
  • Install pending driver updates supplied by your PC or hardware manufacturer, especially for graphics, storage, network, and chipset devices.
  • Do not force a feature update on a system with a known compatibility warning unless Microsoft’s instructions specifically tell you to do so.

A driver problem can also cause an update to install and then roll back. If that happens, note the driver or device named in the rollback message before attempting another upgrade.

Step 8: Use Windows Update Assistant for a delayed feature update

Windows Update Assistant is a manual route for installing a missing feature update on a compatible x86 or x64 PC. It is not the general solution for every quality-update problem, and it does not run on ARM-based PCs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run winver and record your current release and build.
  2. Confirm the system type under Settings > System > About. Do not use the Assistant on an ARM-based PC.
  3. Open Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page and choose the Windows Update Assistant.
  4. Read the compatibility and backup instructions, then download and launch the Assistant.
  5. Allow it to check the device. If it reports that the PC is not compatible or that a safeguard hold applies, stop rather than bypassing the warning.
  6. Keep the PC connected to power and connected to the internet while it downloads and installs.
  7. Restart when prompted, then run winver to confirm the new build.

Back up important files before starting. The Assistant can take substantial time and several restarts. If it fails, record the displayed error code and return to Windows Update troubleshooting; do not repeatedly relaunch it without addressing the reported cause.

Step 9: Run Microsoft’s dedicated “not scanning” troubleshooter

If Windows Update still does not scan after the service and cache checks, Microsoft provides a dedicated troubleshooter for repairing Windows Update system files and settings on devices that are not scanning for updates for certain internal reasons. Run it from Microsoft’s support instructions, follow its detection and repair steps, restart when requested, and check Windows Update again.

This route is especially appropriate when the Settings troubleshooter finishes without a repair, the Windows Update service will not remain running, or cache files cannot be rebuilt normally.

How to decide whether to wait or keep repairing

What you observe Most likely interpretation Next move
Windows scans quickly, reports that you are up to date, and shows no errors The update may be in a staged rollout or held for compatibility Keep Windows Update enabled, install offered quality updates, and check periodically
The Check for updates control spins indefinitely or returns an error Local service, cache, network, permissions, or system-file problem Run Get Help, check blockers, then reset services/cache
Update history shows repeated failures The update is being detected but cannot install Free disk space, repair system files, check drivers, and use the error details
A feature update is available elsewhere but absent on this PC Staged availability or a compatibility hold is possible Verify architecture and consider Windows Update Assistant only on compatible x86/x64 hardware
The PC is ARM-based The Windows Update Assistant is unsupported Use Windows Update and Microsoft’s troubleshooting paths

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

Seek Microsoft or manufacturer support when the PC cannot boot normally after an update attempt, system services fail with access-denied errors, DISM and System File Checker cannot repair files, or the same rollback repeats after you have resolved storage, network, and driver issues. Provide the Windows version from winver, the update-history entry, exact error codes, the system type, and the steps already completed. That information is more useful than saying only that an update is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete the entire Windows directory, edit registry values copied from an unverified forum, or use a feature-update bypass to defeat a compatibility hold. A staged rollout is not an error, and forcing an update around a safeguard can create the very driver or application conflict that Microsoft is trying to prevent.
