How to Fix Windows 7 Error 0x80007045D (When the Code Is Unconfirmed)

There is no Microsoft-documented meaning or confirmed fix for 0x80007045D on Windows 7. Microsoft’s activation, Windows Update and upgrade error tables reviewed do not define this exact string. Treat it as an unconfirmed code until you check every character and record the complete message, the program or Windows component showing it, and the action that triggered it.

The correct repair depends on that context. Use the activation branch if the message appears while Windows is being activated, the Windows Update branch if an update fails, the setup branch if it appears during installation or upgrade, and the application branch if a separate program displays it. A similar non-Microsoft result describes a Windows 11 “missing” error, but that does not establish a Windows 7 meaning or a Microsoft-supported remedy.

Start by proving what happened

Before changing servicing files or buying a product key, write down the evidence. A transcription error is especially easy with a code that contains both zeroes and the letter O, and with an unusually long hexadecimal-looking string.

  • Copy the code character by character, including the leading 0x, every zero, and the final letter or digit. Capitalization normally does not change a hexadecimal value, but a missing or extra character does.
  • Copy the entire sentence around the code, not just the number.
  • Record whether it appeared during activation, Windows Update, Windows setup or upgrade, boot, or inside a third-party application.
  • Note whether the same action reproduces the message after a restart.
  • Open Event Viewer with eventvwr.msc and record any matching error from the time of the failure. Include the log name, event source and event ID.
  • Check whether you can sign in with an administrator account. The servicing commands later in this guide require an elevated Command Prompt.
Where the code appears What to do first Risk and evidence to consider
Windows activation Verify the full activation message and follow Microsoft’s activation guidance. Do not replace a key or purchase a license before the code and activation state are confirmed.
Windows Update Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, check the connection and disk space, restart, then retry. Record repeatability and the Windows Update history entry before resetting caches.
Windows setup or upgrade Record the setup phase and exact message; restart and retry only after preserving the evidence. Changing servicing folders can complicate setup recovery, so use the least invasive path first.
Third-party application Use the application’s repair or reinstall procedure and inspect its event-log entry. Windows Update repairs will not automatically explain an error generated by another program.

If it is an activation error

Verify activation before changing licensing

  1. Open Control Panel, choose System and Security, then System. Record the activation status and the edition shown.
  2. Reopen the original activation dialog and copy the complete message. A screenshot is useful, but keep a transcription as well.
  3. Use Microsoft’s Windows activation guidance for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and compare the complete message, not only the number.
  4. If the exact code remains absent from Microsoft’s table, follow Microsoft Support’s direction: If you’re getting an error code that isn’t listed on this page, contact customer support.

An unlisted code is not evidence that the product key is invalid, that Windows must be reinstalled, or that a new license is required. Confirm the edition, activation state and complete message with Microsoft before making a licensing change.

If it is a Windows Update failure

Use the low-risk checks first

  1. In Control Panel, open Troubleshooting, choose Fix problems with Windows Update, and let the troubleshooter complete its checks.
  2. Verify that the computer has a working network connection. If possible, retry after reconnecting to the network rather than changing system files.
  3. Restart Windows 7. A pending restart can leave an update transaction incomplete.
  4. Check the system drive for adequate free space and remove only files you recognize as safe to remove. Do not delete servicing folders manually.
  5. Open Windows Update, review View update history, and retry the same update. Record the update name, KB number and the exact new message if it fails again.

Microsoft lists incomplete downloads, corrupted or missing system files, a disabled Windows Update service and another process blocking the update among the general causes of update failures. Those causes explain why the checks above are useful; they do not decode 0x80007045D.

Check the update services

Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and inspect Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Cryptographic Services. A service that is disabled can prevent an update from completing. If one is stopped or disabled, use its Properties dialog to restore a normal startup setting and start it, then retry the update. If the service immediately stops again, record that symptom instead of repeatedly forcing it to start.

Reset the update cache only after backing up

For a repeatable update-servicing failure, first back up the operating-system disk or make another recovery copy. Close Windows Update and open Command Prompt with Run as administrator. Run these commands one at a time:

net stop bits
net stop cryptSvc
ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv

The ren commands preserve the old folders under new names; they do not erase them. If a service is already stopped, note the message and continue. If a folder cannot be renamed, stop and investigate which process has it open rather than deleting it. After the services restart, reboot and retry Windows Update. If the failure changes, record the new code and the update history entry.

Repair permissions and the component store only when servicing is the symptom

Microsoft’s escalation procedure for persistent Windows Update failures also covers resetting permissions on %windir%WinSxS and %windir%SoftwareDistribution, ensuring that TrustedInstaller owns the WinSxS directory, and repairing the component store with DISM when necessary. These operations affect core servicing files. Use an elevated prompt, make the operating-system backup first, and follow Microsoft Learn’s exact command sequence for Windows 7 and the matching installation media; do not substitute a random command copied for Windows 10 or Windows 11.

An offline DISM repair requires a source that matches the installed Windows 7 edition, architecture and service-pack level. The drive letter, image index and source path therefore cannot be safely guessed in a general guide. If you do not have matching media or cannot identify the correct image index, stop after the cache reset and obtain Microsoft support rather than pointing DISM at an unrelated ISO.

Test for security software and filter-driver interference

Microsoft warns that third-party antivirus software or file-system filter drivers can lock update files. For diagnosis, perform a clean restart: press Win+R, run msconfig, hide Microsoft services, temporarily disable the remaining non-Microsoft services, and restart. Retry the same update once. Immediately restore the normal startup configuration after the test; a clean restart is a diagnostic step, not a permanent security setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To list file-system filter drivers, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

fltmc

Save the output before changing anything. Do not delete a driver because its name is unfamiliar. If temporarily disabling security software is part of your vendor’s diagnostic procedure, disconnect from unnecessary networks, disable it only for the single retry, re-enable it immediately afterward, and run a normal security check.

If it appears during Windows setup or an upgrade

Do not assume that an update-cache reset will fix a setup failure. Photograph or transcribe the complete setup message, record the stage at which it appears, and note whether the same media and action reproduce it after a restart. Preserve the installation logs and any Event Viewer entry before making changes. Verify that the installation media and Windows edition match the computer, then use Microsoft’s setup or upgrade support for the exact message. Because 0x80007045D is not defined in the reviewed Microsoft tables, there is no evidence that a particular product key, USB drive or installation package is the remedy.

If a third-party application displays it

When the code is shown by a separate application rather than Windows activation or Windows Update, identify the application name and version. Use that program’s built-in repair option or its documented uninstall-and-reinstall process, and check the application’s own log or the matching Event Viewer entry. Avoid renaming SoftwareDistribution, changing TrustedInstaller ownership or running component-store repairs unless Windows Update itself is failing; those changes target Windows servicing and may not affect an application-generated message.

About KB3135445

Microsoft lists KB3135445 as a Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x64 update, published July 15, 2024, and notes that installation may require a restart. The listing does not connect KB3135445 to 0x80007045D. Treat it as an ordinary update listing, not as a confirmed fix for this code. Install it only when Windows Update or Microsoft’s catalog identifies it as applicable to the installed edition and architecture.

What not to do

  • Do not treat a search result for a similar Windows 11 “missing” error as a Windows 7 diagnosis.
  • Do not buy a product key, replace a license or reinstall Windows solely because this unlisted code appears.
  • Do not delete WinSxS, SoftwareDistribution or catroot2. Renaming the latter two is a controlled troubleshooting step; deleting servicing data is not.
  • Do not leave antivirus protection or a clean-boot configuration disabled after testing.
  • Do not run DISM against an unmatched image source or use Windows 10/11 instructions on Windows 7 without checking compatibility.
  • Do not repeat a failing command indefinitely. Preserve the exact output and escalate when the symptom changes or the system becomes unstable.

When to stop and contact support

Contact Microsoft or the relevant application vendor when the code remains unlisted after verification, activation is involved, the update failure persists after the low-risk checks and documented cache reset, or the system cannot boot normally after servicing changes. Provide the complete message, the subsystem, the repeatable action, Windows 7 edition and architecture, update history, Event Viewer details, and the commands already attempted. That information is more useful than reporting the number alone.

The practical answer is therefore conditional: 0x80007045D has no confirmed Windows 7 definition in the Microsoft tables reviewed. Verify the transcription, choose the branch based on where it appears, use the least invasive Windows Update checks first, and escalate unlisted activation or persistent servicing failures with complete evidence.
