One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe Windows Update error usually written 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled, stopped, or not running. The title’s 0xC80070422 spelling may be a transcription or a context-specific variant; compare it with the exact text in your dialog. On Windows 7, the primary fix is to enable and start Windows Update in services.msc. If the service will not stay running, stop it, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start it again.
What 0x80070422 means
Microsoft identifies 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and describes it as a condition in which the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The code itself is a service-status error; it does not, by itself, establish that the computer has malware or that Windows files are permanently damaged.

Some dialogs, searches, or copied notes show 0xC80070422 with an extra “C.” Microsoft’s current Windows Update documentation uses 0x80070422. If your screen actually displays the C-prefixed form, record the complete message before changing anything, because a different component may be reporting a similar-looking value.

Before changing anything
- Confirm that the message appears during Windows Update or when checking for updates. A code from another application may require a different procedure.
- Sign in with an account that can change Windows services. If Windows rejects the change, you may need the computer’s administrator.
- Write down the exact error text and whether Windows Update is merely stopped or is set to Disabled. That distinction helps you choose the next step.
- Save open work. You will restart the computer after changing the service.
Fix 1: enable and start Windows Update
This is Microsoft’s primary procedure for 0x80070422.

- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
services.msc, then press Enter. The Services console opens. - Scroll to Windows Update. Open it by double-clicking the entry.
- In the Properties window, locate Startup type and select Automatic.
- Check Service status. If it says Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Close the Services console and restart Windows.
- After Windows starts, open Windows Update and check for updates again.
If the service starts and remains running, the 0x80070422 condition should no longer be caused by a disabled Windows Update service. If the same code returns, continue with the component reset below instead of repeatedly clicking Start.
Fix 2: reset the Windows Update download cache
Microsoft’s reset sequence is intended for cases where the service will not stay running or the error remains after the service has been enabled. It stops Windows Update, removes the contents of its local distribution folder, and starts the service again.

- Open
services.mscwith Win + R. - Find Windows Update, open its Properties, and select Stop. Wait until the status shows that the service has stopped.
- Open Windows Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder. Do not delete the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If Windows reports that a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again. - Return to the Windows Update Properties window and select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK, restart the computer, and check for updates.
The folder contains Windows Update’s working download data. Clearing its contents gives the service a fresh working area; it does not extend Windows 7 support or install an update by itself.

Use the result to choose the next step
| What you observe | What it indicates | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update was Disabled, but changes to Automatic and starts normally | The error matched the disabled-service condition. | Restart Windows and check for updates. |
The service starts only after clearing SoftwareDistribution |
The update working data needed to be rebuilt. | Restart, then check for updates again. |
| The service stops immediately or cannot be started | The service fix has not completed; the account may also lack permission to change it. | Verify administrator access and repeat the stop, clear, and start sequence carefully. |
| The dialog still shows a C-prefixed or otherwise different code | The message may not be Microsoft’s 0x80070422 condition. | Use the exact dialog text to identify the reporting component before applying more Windows Update changes. |
| Windows Update works, but the computer remains on Windows 7 | Repairing the service does not change the operating system’s support status. | Plan an upgrade or retirement decision rather than treating the service repair as a security solution. |
What to do if Windows will not let you change the service
“Access denied” or missing Start controls
Changing a service and deleting files under C:Windows require appropriate permissions. Sign in with an administrator account or ask the device owner to perform the procedure. Do not make registry edits merely because the Services console is inconvenient; Microsoft’s documented first step is to check whether Windows Update is running.

- Perfect for installs that are corrupted or full of viruses. Works on any make or model computer.Repair boot manager is missing, NTLDR is missing, Blue Screens of Death (BSOD) and more. This item does not include a key code or a license. You must have your own key code to use the install option otherwise you will get a non-genuine message.
The service starts, then stops again
Repeat the reset in the order shown: stop Windows Update, clear the contents of SoftwareDistribution, start Windows Update, and restart Windows. Starting the service before its working folder is cleared does not complete the reset sequence.
The folder cannot be emptied
A file that is still in use usually means Windows Update has not fully stopped. Return to services.msc, verify the service status, and try the deletion again. Delete only the contents of the folder, not the folder itself.

The code returns after a successful restart
Check the Startup type again. It must be Automatic, and the service must be running after the restart. If those conditions are true but the dialog uses a different code, stop treating it as the documented 0x80070422 condition and capture the new message exactly.
Windows 7 support limits
Microsoft ended standard Windows 7 support on January 14, 2020. Extended Security Updates ended on January 10, 2023. Therefore, restoring Windows Update can correct the service error but cannot provide current security coverage for ordinary Windows 7 installations. Once the update service is working, decide whether the computer can be upgraded to a supported Windows release or should be retired. Keep that lifecycle decision separate from the mechanical repair of the service.
Should you use an automated repair utility?
The manual service and cache procedures above are the direct Microsoft-supported path. An automated utility is optional and should not replace checking the service yourself. Review its current terms before installing any third-party software, and keep normal antivirus protection in place.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and includes settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, a file shredder, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial is offered by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
