Windows 7 update error 0x80070422 means the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. The quickest manual repair is to open services.msc, set the Windows Update service (wuauserv) to Automatic, start it, restart Windows, and try Windows Update again. If the service starts but updates still fail, reset the update components and clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
The spelling 0X800070422 contains an extra zero after 8007. Use 0x80070422 when searching Microsoft documentation or describing the error to support.

What error 0x80070422 means
Microsoft’s troubleshooting table defines 0x80070422 as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” Microsoft Learn associates the code with ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED: the service Windows uses to check for and install updates cannot run because it is stopped or disabled.
On Windows 7, the relevant service is named Windows Update in the Services console and uses the service name wuauserv. A Windows 7 Service Pack 1 support case with the same code directs users to inspect this service. That makes the service state the first thing to correct; changing unrelated settings or buying hardware is not part of the documented repair.

Before you start
- Sign in to an account with administrator rights. Windows may request administrator confirmation when you change a service or remove update-cache files.
- Save open work and close programs before restarting.
- Write down the exact code shown by Windows. The documented code is
0x80070422; a different code can require a different procedure. - If you are installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1, use the same service-first process before attempting the installation again.
The first repair changes one service setting. The later cache reset removes update files that Windows can recreate; it does not remove your personal documents, pictures, or installed applications.
Fix 0x80070422 through Services
Use this sequence when Windows Update reports that the service is disabled, stopped, or unavailable.
- Open the Services console. Press Win+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one. - Locate Windows Update. Scroll through the alphabetical list to Windows Update. You can confirm the internal service name by opening its properties and checking that it is
wuauserv. - Open its properties. Double-click Windows Update, or right-click it and choose Properties.
- Set the startup type. On the General tab, open Startup type and select Automatic. This allows Windows to start the service during normal operation instead of leaving it disabled.
- Start the service. If Service status shows Stopped, click Start. Wait for the status to change, then select Apply and OK. If the service is already running, still confirm that the startup type is Automatic, select Apply, and close the dialog.
- Restart Windows 7. A restart ensures the new startup setting is loaded cleanly.
- Retry Windows Update. Open Windows Update from Control Panel and check for updates again. If the update proceeds, the disabled-service condition was the blocker.
If the Start button is unavailable
If Start is greyed out, first confirm that you opened Services with administrator rights. Reopen services.msc from an administrator account and check the Windows Update properties again. Do not change the startup type of random services while trying to make the button available; the documented fix concerns Windows Update itself.
If Windows reports that the service cannot start
Note the exact message, close the properties window, and restart the computer once. After rebooting, return to services.msc and verify that Windows Update still shows Automatic. If it remains unable to start, proceed to the component and cache reset below. A service that cannot start, a setting that reverts to disabled, or an error that returns immediately after reboot is a reason to escalate rather than repeatedly clicking Start.
Reset Windows Update components when the service fix is not enough
Changing the service state addresses a disabled or stopped service. If the service starts but Windows Update still fails, Microsoft’s component-reset guidance includes clearing the local update cache.
- Stop Windows Update. Open
services.msc, open Windows Update properties, and click Stop. Leave the Services window open or remember that the service must remain stopped while its cache is cleared. - Open the cache folder. In File Explorer, go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Administrator approval may be required. - Delete the contents. Select the files and subfolders inside
SoftwareDistributionand delete them. Delete the contents, not theSoftwareDistributionfolder itself. These are cached update files that Windows can create again. - Start Windows Update again. Return to Services, open Windows Update, click Start, and make sure its startup type remains Automatic. Select Apply and OK.
- Restart and retry. Restart Windows 7, open Windows Update, and check again.
If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and verify that Windows Update actually shows Stopped before trying the deletion again. Do not force-delete files while the service is active. If the service will not stop or the folder cannot be cleared even with administrator rights, document the message and use Microsoft’s full Windows Update component-reset guidance rather than deleting unrelated system files.

Which repair route should you use?
| Repair route | Cause addressed | Risk | Required privilege | When to use or escalate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Set Windows Update to Automatic and start it | Disabled or stopped wuauserv service |
Changes one service setting | Administrator account | Always start here for 0x80070422 |
Clear SoftwareDistribution contents |
Corrupted or unusable Windows Update cache after the service is running | Cached update files are removed and downloaded again | Administrator account | Use when the service starts but the retry still fails |
| Microsoft component-reset guidance or support | Recurring update-component failures or a service that will not start | May involve additional system-level steps | Administrator access; follow the documented procedure | Escalate when the two manual routes do not resolve the problem |
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 will not install
The same 0x80070422 code appears in a Windows 7 Service Pack 1 support case. Treat it as a service-state problem first:
Recommended Free Tools
- Sign in as an administrator.
- Open
services.msc. - Set Windows Update (
wuauserv) to Automatic. - Start the service, select Apply and OK, and restart.
- Retry the Service Pack 1 installation.
If the service is running and the installation still fails, stop Windows Update, clear the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, start the service again, restart Windows, and retry. A failed second attempt does not prove that the service setting was wrong; it indicates that the update components may also need resetting.

How to tell whether the repair worked
- In Windows Update properties, Startup type remains Automatic after a reboot.
- Service status changes to Running when you start the service.
- Windows Update can begin checking for updates instead of immediately reporting that the service is disabled.
- After a cache reset, Windows may spend time rebuilding or downloading update files; allow the check to complete before deciding that it failed.
If the code returns after a successful update check, reopen Services rather than assuming the cache reset changed the startup setting. A service that has reverted to disabled points to a persistent configuration problem; a running service with repeated update errors points toward component corruption or another Windows Update issue.
When to stop troubleshooting manually
Use Microsoft’s broader Windows Update component-reset instructions or seek technical support when any of these conditions apply:
- Windows Update cannot be started even after setting it to Automatic and restarting.
- The startup type changes back to Disabled without your action.
- The
SoftwareDistributioncontents cannot be removed while the service is confirmed stopped. - The same failure recurs after the cache is rebuilt.
- Other Windows components show damage or additional errors beyond Windows Update.
Keep the exact code, the service status, the startup type, and any message shown when clicking Start. Those details distinguish a disabled-service problem from a wider system issue and make further support more efficient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo you need installation media or a physical product?
No physical product is required for the documented 0x80070422 repair. The supported first steps are Windows’ own Services console and, if necessary, resetting the local Windows Update cache. Installation media, repair DVDs, or USB storage are not prerequisites for changing the service state or clearing SoftwareDistribution.
