- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type

- Click Apply, then OK to save the change and close the properties window.

- Startup type should show Automatic.
- Service status should show the service running rather than stopped.
If the status is running but Windows Update still reports 0x80070422, close the Services window, restart Windows once, and check again. If the service returns to stopped immediately, continue with the escalation steps rather than repeatedly clicking Start.
If Windows Update will not start
The Start button is unavailable
Reopen the Windows Update properties and check the Startup type first. A disabled service cannot be started until its startup type is changed. Select Automatic, apply the setting, and then try Start again.
The service starts and then stops
A service that stops again points to a wider Windows Update problem or another required service that has also been disabled. Do not assume that a registry cleaner or a third-party repair utility is required. First run the built-in troubleshooter described below, then check whether other required services have been disabled.

Check the exact code again. If it is not 0x80070422, use the procedure for the code actually displayed. If the code is still 0x80070422 and Windows Update is stopped again, treat the service setting as a symptom of a persistent update-component issue and move to the troubleshooter and, if necessary, a component reset.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows includes a Windows Update troubleshooter that performs guided checks for common update problems. It is the next step when the Services procedure has been completed but the update check still fails.
- Open the Windows Update troubleshooter from the Windows troubleshooting tools available in your Windows 8 installation.
- Follow each prompt and allow the tool to apply a proposed correction when it identifies one.
- When the troubleshooter finishes, restart Windows if it asks you to do so.
- Open Windows Update and run the update check again.
The troubleshooter is broader than changing one service, but it remains a guided, built-in step. Record any message it displays; the wording can help distinguish a service problem from an update-component failure.
Reset Windows Update components for persistent failures
Microsoft documents resetting Windows Update components as an escalation path for update or upgrade failures that persist after the service and troubleshooter steps. A reset addresses the wider update mechanism rather than only the Windows Update service entry.
Because the reset procedure uses command-line operations, use Microsoft’s documented sequence exactly and only if you are comfortable with the command line. Do not improvise commands from unrelated repair guides or omit steps. A component reset is broader than changing a startup type, so it should not be the first response to a newly observed 0x80070422.

- Complete the Services procedure and run the Windows Update troubleshooter first.
- Back up any work and close open applications before starting a reset.
- Use the official Microsoft component-reset instructions for your Windows version.
- Follow the commands in the documented order, including any restart requested by the procedure.
- After the reset is complete, check Windows Update again and note whether the error code has changed.
If the reset does not help, preserve the exact error text and any troubleshooter result. Those details are more useful for further support than repeating the same service change.
Check for other disabled services
Microsoft’s diagnosis for this error is specifically to check whether the Windows Update service is running. If that service immediately stops again, inspect other required services for a disabled or stopped state. Change only a service you can identify as part of the update process, and keep a note of its original setting before making a change.
Do not set every service to Automatic. Services have different purposes, and changing unrelated startup settings can create new problems. The goal is to restore the service dependency that Windows Update needs, not to reconfigure the entire Services list.
Common mistakes that prevent the fix
Using the mistyped code as though it were exact
The string 0X800704022 contains an extra trailing digit compared with Microsoft’s documented 0x80070422. Read the message directly from Windows before following this guide. Code differences matter.

Changing only the status, not the startup type
Clicking Start can get the service running for the current session, but the service may stop being available after a restart if Startup type remains disabled or otherwise unsuitable. Set it to Automatic and apply the change.
Skipping the restart
Restart Windows after saving the service change. Then run the update check from a fresh session instead of judging the repair from the old error message.
Resetting components too early
A component reset has a wider scope and requires command-line work. Use it only after the focused service fix and built-in troubleshooter fail.

0x80070422 identifies a disabled or stopped service condition. By itself, it does not establish that the computer is infected. Keep the repair focused on Windows Update unless separate security symptoms require a different investigation.
What to do if the code changes
If Windows displays a different hexadecimal code after the restart or reset, stop applying the 0x80070422 procedure automatically. The original diagnosis applies to the documented code, not to every Windows Update failure. Write down the new code, the complete message, and which step preceded it.
A changed code can indicate that the service issue was corrected and that Windows has reached a separate update problem. Treat that as a new diagnosis rather than evidence that the service change failed.
