What error 0x80080005 means
The code is a Windows Update failure status, not a diagnosis of one specific broken component. Microsoft’s update guidance places 0x80080005 under corrupted files or incorrect system configurations. In a 2023 Microsoft Q&A answer, Microsoft employee Juan Sobrado explains that the code means “access denied.” In practical terms, Windows 8 may successfully scan for updates and download them, then fail when it attempts to write, replace or register the downloaded update files.

The message does not prove that the computer is infected, and the hexadecimal code itself is not a malicious file. It identifies the stage at which Windows Update stopped. The same code can therefore appear for more than one reason: damaged Windows system files, an incorrect configuration, insufficient room on the system drive, or security software interfering with installation.

Before changing anything
Confirm the edition and build
Press Windows key+R, enter winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows edition, version and build shown in the dialog. Also open Windows Update and note the update name or KB number that fails, the complete wording of the message and whether the failure occurs during download, installation or restart.
Use an administrator account
System File Checker and some Windows Update repairs require elevation. Sign in with an administrator account or have the administrator credentials available. Save open work and connect the PC to reliable power before running a scan or restarting.
Keep a recovery record
Write down the current free space on the system drive, the security products installed, the date of the last successful update and the result of each step below. This information prevents repeated guessing and gives Microsoft support a usable description if manual repair does not work.

1. Run System File Checker as administrator
Microsoft’s first repair instruction is System File Checker (SFC). It checks protected Windows files and can replace damaged copies with cached versions when they are available.

- Press
Windows key+X. - Choose Command Prompt (Admin). If User Account Control asks for permission, select Yes and provide administrator credentials if prompted.
- At the command prompt, type
sfc /scannowand press Enter. Include the space before/scannow. - Leave the window open while verification reaches 100 percent. Do not shut down the computer because the percentage appears to pause.
- Read the final Windows Resource Protection message, restart Windows, and try the same update once more.
How to interpret the SFC result
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC did not find a protected-file problem. Continue with the Windows Update troubleshooter, storage check and security-software review.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart before retrying Windows Update. The repair may have removed the condition that caused access to be denied.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Record the exact message. You may run SFC once more after a restart, but repeated scans are not a substitute for support when the same files remain unrepaired.
- Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service: Record that result and continue to the troubleshooter. Do not download replacement DLL files from an unofficial site.
SFC is a file-integrity check, not a complete Windows Update reset. A successful scan does not guarantee that 0x80080005 will disappear when the cause is storage or security-software interference.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 8 includes a Windows Update troubleshooter that checks common update settings and offers guided corrections. Open the Control Panel, find the troubleshooting section, select the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow each prompt. Allow it to apply a recommended correction only after reading what it proposes.
- Close other programs and open the Windows Update troubleshooter from Control Panel.
- Let the diagnostic check complete; do not cancel it if it appears to pause while examining services or settings.
- Apply the fixes it reports as appropriate, then close the troubleshooter.
- Restart Windows even if it does not explicitly require a restart.
- Open Windows Update, select Check for updates, and retry the specific update.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, keep that result with your notes. It is still useful evidence: it means the guided checks did not find a supported automatic correction, not that the update is guaranteed to install.
3. Check the system drive for enough free space
Windows Update needs working room for the downloaded package, temporary files and the installation process. Microsoft notes that a PC with a small hard drive may need a USB drive to update. This is a storage workaround, not a repair for corrupted Windows files or a permission problem.

- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Look at the bar for the drive containing Windows, normally
C:. Open its Properties dialog to see the available space. - Back up personal files before removing anything. Move large personal videos, pictures or installers to another backed-up location, and empty the Recycle Bin only after checking its contents.
- If the internal drive remains too small, connect a USB flash drive with enough available capacity for the update process and follow the storage prompt Windows displays. Keep the drive connected until Windows finishes or tells you it can be removed.
- Restart and run Windows Update again.
Do not treat a USB drive as a way to replace damaged system components. If the drive has plenty of free space and the same code appears, return to the SFC, troubleshooter and security checks rather than repeatedly adding storage.
4. Check whether security software is blocking installation
Juan Sobrado’s Microsoft Q&A guidance specifically recommends checking whether third-party antivirus or other security software is interfering with installation of new update files. Security software can inspect files as Windows tries to write or replace them, and a blocked operation can look like an access-denied failure.
Review logs first
Open the security product’s event or quarantine history and look at the time of the failed update. A blocked Windows Update file, service or temporary folder is relevant evidence. Do not delete a quarantined item merely because its name resembles an update file.

Use only a documented temporary test
If the security vendor documents a temporary pause for troubleshooting, follow that procedure exactly, retry the update once, and turn protection back on immediately afterward. Avoid browsing or downloading unrelated files while protection is paused. If the vendor provides no safe test procedure, leave protection enabled and ask the vendor or Microsoft for guidance instead of uninstalling it blindly.

Interpret the result
- If the update installs only while the security product is paused, restore protection and contact that product’s support for an exclusion or corrected configuration. Do not leave the computer unprotected as a permanent fix.
- If the code remains while protection is paused, re-enable the product and continue with the other branches. Security interference was not demonstrated by that test.
5. Retry Windows Update and capture the outcome
After SFC, the troubleshooter, the storage check and any security review, restart Windows and run Windows Update once. Write down whether scanning succeeds, whether downloading reaches 100 percent, the exact installation percentage at failure and the full error text. If a different code appears, record that code instead of continuing to troubleshoot 0x80080005.
Check Update History for the failed KB number and the date. A repeatable failure on one update is different from failures on every update; that distinction helps support identify whether the package or the local installation environment needs attention.
Use the symptoms to choose the next branch

What the error does—and does not—tell you
It is not a standalone hardware diagnosis
0x80080005 identifies a failed update operation. It does not establish that the hard drive, memory or motherboard is defective. Hardware troubleshooting may be appropriate when the PC shows broader symptoms, but the code alone is insufficient evidence for replacing a component.

It is not proof of malware
The “access denied” wording refers to the update operation’s ability to access files or settings. It is not a statement that malware caused the failure. Use your normal security software and its documented scans, but do not remove system files or install unverified “repair” downloads because of this code.

It is not fixed by an undocumented registry edit
Registry instructions copied from an unknown tutorial can create a second problem and are difficult to reverse accurately. The available Microsoft guidance supports SFC, the Windows Update troubleshooter, a storage check and investigation of security-software interference; it does not establish a universal registry modification for Windows 8 error 0x80080005.
When to seek Microsoft support
Escalate after the built-in sequence if SFC repeatedly cannot repair files, the troubleshooter cannot correct the issue, adequate storage is available, security software is not blocking the operation and the same update still fails. Include:
- Windows edition, version and build from
winver. - The update’s KB number and the complete error message.
- Whether scanning and downloading succeed before installation fails.
- The final SFC message and the troubleshooter’s result.
- Available space on the system drive and whether a USB drive was offered or used.
- The names of third-party antivirus or security products and any relevant event-log entry.
- The date and time of the latest failed attempt, plus the steps already completed.
This record lets support distinguish a protected-file problem from a storage limitation or an installation block. It also prevents you from repeating risky changes that have already failed.
