Windows Defender error 0x80070422 usually means a required Windows service is disabled or stopped, so Windows cannot retrieve or apply an update. The code is often mistyped as 0X080070422; verify the exact hexadecimal value shown in Windows Security, Windows Update, or update history before changing anything.
Start with the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, then restore the Windows Update service, clear its update cache, and repair Windows components if necessary. The steps below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10, with version-specific notes where support and menu labels differ.

What error 0x80070422 means
Microsoft defines 0x80070422 as a service that cannot start because it is disabled. In its Windows Update guidance, Microsoft labels the condition as the Windows Update service being disabled or stopped. Because Microsoft Defender updates can depend on Windows update infrastructure, the same code may appear while Windows Security is checking for protection updates.

A historical Microsoft Q&A report also describes the code appearing when a Defender-related service was turned off by an administrator or when registry data affected service configuration. That report is useful context, not proof that every occurrence has the same cause. A managed work or school computer may intentionally prevent users from changing the service.

Before you change anything
- Confirm the code. Check Windows Security, Settings, Windows Update, or update history and distinguish
0x80070422from similarly formatted codes. - Record the Windows edition and version. Windows 11 and Windows 10 use different Settings layouts, and Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025.
- Back up personal files. Microsoft recommends backing up files before troubleshooting update problems, especially before component or command-line repairs.
- Note whether the computer is managed. If a work or school administrator controls updates, service settings may be locked. Contact that administrator rather than forcing a registry change.
- Keep protection in mind. If another security product is installed, do not leave the computer without protection while testing a removal or repair step.
Choose the least risky repair first
| Route | What it addresses | Privilege | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Common update diagnostics and automatic corrections | Standard Settings workflow | First attempt on an unmanaged PC |
| Windows Update service repair | A stopped or disabled service | Administrator may be required | The service is not running or is set to Disabled |
| SoftwareDistribution cache reset | Damaged or stuck downloaded update files | Administrator access is commonly needed | The service runs but updates repeatedly fail |
| DISM and system-file repair | Corrupted Windows servicing components or protected files | Elevated command line | Earlier steps do not resolve the error |
| Windows Security Troubleshooter | Windows Security and Defender-specific feature or update problems | Follow Microsoft’s utility instructions | The failure is confined to Windows Security |
Step 1: Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the Get Help troubleshooter prompts. Microsoft says this diagnostic flow automatically checks common conditions and attempts to correct most update problems it detects.
- Restart if requested, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot, choose the additional troubleshooters option if it appears, select Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter. Labels can vary by Windows 10 build. Restart and retry Windows Update after it finishes.
Step 2: Re-enable the Windows Update service
This is the central manual fix when the error means that the service is disabled or stopped.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the W section is usually quickest.
- Double-click Windows Update to open its properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic. If your organization requires a different setting, do not override its policy.
- If Service status is Stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the computer.
- After signing in, open Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the original message came from Windows Security, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and check again.
If the Startup type menu is unavailable, the Start button returns an access-denied message, or the setting changes back after a restart, the computer may be controlled by Group Policy, mobile-device management, or another administrator. A registry edit can make the system less stable and may conflict with that policy, so ask the administrator to restore the approved update configuration.

Step 3: Reset the Windows Update download cache
Windows stores downloaded update data in the C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution folder. Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions allow the contents of this folder to be removed after Windows Update is stopped; Windows recreates the working data when the service starts again. This does not remove your personal documents, but it can discard partially downloaded update files and may require Windows to download them again.
- Sign in with an administrator account, or be ready to provide administrator approval.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop. Close the Services window only after the status shows that it has stopped.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents inside the folder, not the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped; restart the computer and retry if necessary. - Open
services.mscagain, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start. - Restart Windows, then run Check for updates.
Do not interrupt a system restart or shut down the computer while Windows is applying an update. If clearing the cache changes nothing, continue to component repair rather than repeatedly deleting the folder.
Step 4: Repair Windows components and protected files
Microsoft lists resetting Windows Update components and using Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) to repair corrupted system files as escalation options. These operations require an elevated command prompt and are intended for users who are comfortable running administrator commands.

Open an elevated command window
- Open Start and type
Command PromptorTerminal. - Choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM
At the administrator prompt, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to reach 100 percent. It can take time and may appear to pause. Do not close the window because the progress display is slow on some systems. If DISM reports that the operation completed successfully, continue with the system-file check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun System File Checker
In the same administrator window, run:
sfc /scannow
Allow the scan to finish. It may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or could not repair some files. Restart Windows after the scan, then test Windows Update and Windows Security again.
When to stop command-line work
Do not keep changing commands when the console reports access errors, a servicing-stack failure, or a policy restriction that you cannot explain. Copy the exact message, note the command that produced it, and use Microsoft’s documented component-reset procedure or professional support. Randomly deleting additional system folders can create a second problem.

Step 5: Use the Windows Security Troubleshooter for a Defender-only failure
If Windows Update works normally but Windows Security still shows 0x80070422, use Microsoft’s downloadable Windows Security Troubleshooter. Microsoft says this utility can enable or repair Windows Security features, including antivirus-protection status and updates.
- Obtain the troubleshooter from Microsoft Support and verify that it is the Windows Security utility, not an unrelated download.
- Close other applications and run the utility according to Microsoft’s prompts.
- Allow it to apply the suggested repair, then restart when requested.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and select Check for updates.
If the troubleshooter says a setting is managed by an organization, stop there and contact the administrator. A personal computer that shows this message unexpectedly may have inherited management settings from a previous employer or school account.

Microsoft notes that non-Microsoft antivirus software can sometimes interfere with Windows upgrades. If another antivirus product is installed, it may control services or block changes that Windows Update needs. Follow the product maker’s documented uninstall process rather than deleting its folders manually.

Do not leave the device unprotected longer than necessary. Removing a third-party antivirus is a troubleshooting measure, not a recommendation to operate permanently without security software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Windows 10 and Windows 11 support context
| System | What to know | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 | The current troubleshooting path uses Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. | Use the Get Help Windows Update troubleshooter before manual service changes. |
| Windows 10 | Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. | Persistent update failures in 2026 may be a reason to plan migration to a supported Windows 11 installation, provided the hardware and edition qualify. |
End of support does not itself explain every 0x80070422 message, but it changes the options available to Windows 10 users. If the service is correctly configured and repairs do not restore updates, continuing to troubleshoot an unsupported installation may provide less security value than moving to a supported system.
Common symptoms and the next action
| Symptom | Likely scope | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update shows 0x80070422 immediately | Windows Update service disabled or stopped | Run the troubleshooter, then inspect Windows Update in services.msc. |
| The service starts but the code returns after restart | Policy, registry configuration, or a component problem | Check whether the device is managed; then use cache reset and component repair. |
| Windows Update succeeds but Defender updates fail | Windows Security-specific configuration | Run the Windows Security Troubleshooter and check for third-party security conflicts. |
| SoftwareDistribution files cannot be deleted | Windows Update is still running or a file is locked | Stop the service, restart if needed, and remove only the folder contents. |
| DISM or SFC reports unrepaired corruption | Deeper Windows servicing or file-integrity issue | Record the exact output and follow Microsoft’s component-repair or support path. |
| Service controls are greyed out | Administrator or organization policy | Contact the device administrator; do not force a registry edit. |
How to verify the repair
- Restart Windows after the final change.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates and check for the latest update.
- Review Windows Update > Update history for the original failure and any new successful installation.
- Wait for the next normal update check instead of repeatedly forcing the process. If the code returns, record the time, exact message, service status, and the last step that changed the system.
When professional or administrator help is appropriate
- The device belongs to an employer, school, or other organization.
- The Windows Update service is disabled by policy or cannot be changed even with an administrator account.
- DISM and SFC both report corruption that they cannot repair.
- Windows fails to boot normally after a servicing change.
- The error persists on Windows 10 after October 14, 2025, and migration to Windows 11 is feasible.
Give support staff the exact code, Windows version, whether Windows Update or Windows Security displayed it, the service startup setting, and the output from any DISM or SFC command. Those details distinguish a stopped service from a policy restriction or damaged component.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, adjust settings that contribute to CPU, memory, or disk load, clear temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and record app crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash.
