Open Windows Security, record the exact code and version information, then retry the update. If it still fails, install the matching Defender package manually, remove third-party antivirus interference, repair Windows component files with DISM and System File Checker, and run Microsoft’s security troubleshooter.
Verify the code before changing anything
Error numbers that look similar can require different remedies. Microsoft’s documented Defender update procedure concerns 0x80070643; an exact Microsoft reference for 0x8007643 is not available. Treat the latter as a likely digit transposition until Windows confirms otherwise.

Defender receives malware definitions under the current name Security Intelligence updates. The update process must contact Microsoft’s update service, verify the package, and write the new intelligence files and related Defender components. A failure can therefore come from a temporary update-channel problem, disabled security services, conflicting antivirus software, damaged Windows component files, or device-management policy.

The code alone does not prove that malware is present, that Windows is permanently damaged, or that a particular file must be deleted. It identifies a failed update operation; the surrounding version and service information determines the appropriate fix.
Retry the update in Windows Security
Microsoft recommends manually checking for updates as an early diagnostic step. The retry also establishes whether the failure was transient.
- Return to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates.
- Select Check for updates.
- Wait for the check to finish, even if the progress indicator pauses temporarily.
- Record the new last-updated time and Security Intelligence version.
Confirm that the device is online and that Defender’s services are allowed to run. If the check succeeds and the version changes, no deeper repair is required. If it fails again with 0x80070643, continue without repeatedly forcing the same check.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting article provides additional checks for Security Intelligence updates and update-source configuration: Microsoft Defender troubleshooting.
Install the Defender update package manually
Manual installation bypasses the normal automatic download path. Use Microsoft’s official Defender updates page: Microsoft Defender updates.

- Plug & Play: Includes user guide and online technical support services. Plug it in and you are ready to go.
Choose the correct package
- Identify whether Windows is 32-bit, 64-bit, or ARM-based in Settings → System → About, under System type.
- Download the Security Intelligence package that matches the operating-system architecture shown there.
- Save the download locally so you can run it with administrator rights.
Run and verify the installer
- Right-click the downloaded package and choose Run as administrator.
- Allow the installer to complete. Do not shut down while it is writing Defender files.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates.
- Check that the Security Intelligence version and last-updated time have changed.
If the package refuses to run, recheck the architecture and download a fresh copy from Microsoft’s page. A manual package that installs successfully but leaves the version unchanged should be treated as an unsuccessful update; proceed to the service, antivirus, and file-repair checks rather than assuming the problem is resolved.
Check for third-party antivirus interference
A non-Microsoft antivirus product that integrates with the Windows Security Center API can disable Microsoft Defender Antivirus. While Defender is disabled, its Security Intelligence update process may not operate normally.
Identify the active security provider
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Who’s protecting me? or Manage providers, depending on the Windows build.
- Note which product is listed as the active antivirus provider.
Remove the conflict safely
If another antivirus is installed, use that product’s documented uninstall or removal process. Do not simply delete its program folder. Restart Windows after removal, then retry the Defender update from Protection updates.
Some products offer a temporary disable option, but a reboot and complete removal are more reliable for determining whether the product is blocking Defender. Once troubleshooting is complete, keep one real-time antivirus provider active; do not leave the computer without real-time protection.
Repair Windows component and system files
Corruption in the Windows image or protected system files can prevent Defender modules from updating. Microsoft documents running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) followed by System File Checker (SFC).

Run DISM first
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter the command below and press Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Allow DISM to reach 100 percent. The process can appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes. Do not close the window while it is working. If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, continue to SFC. If it reports that the source files could not be found, note the exact message; repeated retries without a valid repair source will not correct that condition.

Run System File Checker
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows, even if SFC says it repaired files immediately.
- Retry Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection updates → Check for updates.
SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or found files it could not repair. Keep that result. Microsoft also uses the DISM/SFC sequence when Defender PowerShell module files are reported as damaged; the result helps support personnel decide the next step.
Run Microsoft’s Windows Security troubleshooter
Use Microsoft’s Windows Security troubleshooter when settings or services appear misconfigured and the normal update sequence has not worked. The troubleshooter checks security features and can enable functions such as antivirus protection and updates.
- Open the Windows Security troubleshooter supplied for your Windows edition through Microsoft Support.
- Follow its prompts and allow it to inspect security settings and related services.
- Apply any recommended repair.
- Restart if prompted.
- Return to Protection updates and select Check for updates.
Automated repair is not guaranteed on managed computers. Organization policy, endpoint-management software, or a deliberately disabled Defender service can override changes made by the troubleshooter. If the device belongs to a workplace or school, ask the administrator before changing security-provider settings.
Compare the available remedies
| Remedy | Internet access | Changes installed security software? | Administrator rights | Primary purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retry in Windows Security | Yes | No | Usually not for the button itself | Refreshes the normal update channel and confirms whether the failure is temporary |
| Manual Defender package | Yes, to download the package | No | Yes, to run the installer | Installs Security Intelligence outside the automatic download path |
| Remove conflicting antivirus | Not necessarily | Yes | Yes | Stops a Windows Security Center conflict that can disable Defender |
| DISM followed by SFC | DISM may need access to repair sources | No | Yes | Repairs the Windows image and protected system files |
| Windows Security troubleshooter | Depends on the troubleshooter | It can change security settings | May be required | Finds and corrects common security-feature or service misconfiguration |
Use the least disruptive option that answers the evidence you have. A manual package is comparatively low-impact but still needs a download. Removing antivirus software has the greatest effect on installed protection. DISM and SFC are deeper repairs, while the troubleshooter is convenient but may be constrained by policy.

Collect diagnostics when the failure persists
For a managed device or a failure that survives the steps above, gather information before making more changes. Record the exact error, Windows edition and build, Defender platform version, Security Intelligence version, KB number, last-updated time, active security provider, and the result of DISM and SFC.
Microsoft’s Defender troubleshooting guidance describes collecting diagnostic files, including output obtained with MpCmdRun, and reviewing service-startup and update-source configuration. Those diagnostics are useful to Microsoft support or an organization’s administrator because they show whether the failure is a download problem, a service problem, a policy restriction, or damaged files.
Do not edit the registry, delete Defender directories, or replace protected files based on forum instructions. Such changes can remove evidence, break servicing, or leave security protection disabled. Use a Microsoft procedure that specifically names the affected Windows version before taking those actions.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 considerations
Microsoft Support states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update support and security fixes are no longer provided for Windows 10. A Windows 10 machine may therefore have lifecycle or servicing limitations that a Windows 11 machine does not. Windows 11 and supported Windows Server editions can use different policies and update channels, so follow the instructions that match the installed platform.
On an organization-managed computer, administrators may control Defender through policy and may intentionally select an alternative antivirus provider. In that situation, a local user may be unable to change the update source or re-enable Defender; the recorded code and version details should be sent to the administrator.

Common failure branches
The code changes after you retry
Stop using the 0x80070643 procedure if Windows now displays a different code. Capture the new number and use code-specific Microsoft guidance. Similar-looking hexadecimal values are not interchangeable.
The manual package installs but updates still fail
Verify that the Security Intelligence version and timestamp changed after the restart. If they did not, check the architecture, active antivirus provider, and Windows file integrity. A successful-looking installer window is not proof that Defender is updating.
DISM or SFC reports unrepaired files
Save the command output and restart only after the command finishes. Run the sequence again only when Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows build call for it; otherwise escalate with the exact DISM and SFC messages rather than deleting system files.

The troubleshooter says it cannot make changes
This commonly indicates a policy, permissions, or service-state limitation. On a managed device, contact the administrator. On a personal device, confirm that you launched the troubleshooter with the required permissions and that a third-party antivirus product is not controlling Windows Security Center.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary, and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
